I'm so excited, I'm hoping for a newly animated opening, not just a replacement of the Beryl and generals shot. They should also include Pluto, Chibiusa is a given but I worry Pluto's getting the shaft.

--Hmm, was that Dad/Mamoru interaction in the manga? I don't recall

--I loved the music that played during the brainwashing scene.

--Aw, they cut out Makoto and Minako having heart eyes over that guy.

--Koan killed an adult male instead of a little girl.

--The anime-original scene of the nuns pushing Chibiusa out was random.

--Pretty good fight scene, I liked the addition of Jupiter and Venus beating up the mooks.

--Thankfully Koan died here, instead of getting a repeat of Jadeite in Crystal.

Overall, a decent start to this arc. Next week is Ami's episode.

Sailor Moon Crystal 15

It's the obligatory school festival episode!

Nah... But we get to see all the Black Moon Clan characters right away, there's some comedy again and I guess the Spectre Sisters won't be saved in this version :p

Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 15:

You know, sometimes I wonder if this series has had its release planned around the schedule of Sailor Moon Classic premiering on Hulu because that would explain a thing or two. It could also be coincidental but events are matching up roughly, it isn't exact for a few reasons but the Black Moon events from the classic series are still very fresh in the mind. Indeed both series open pretty much the same way. There are some changes in the details like the Black Moon clan knowing who the Sailor Scouts are from the outset and the like wise the Scouts learning about Black Moon way earlier. Probably the biggest change is the attack target and the motivation behind it.
Also, in this series Chibi-Usa is carrying around a depleted version of the Silver Crystal in addition to the time key. Sadly, Koan being based off of her manga counterpart is killed off quickly and without ceremony. Not going to lie, The Specter Sisters were just flat out done better in the 1990s series as was the showdown between the two of them in the anime series. I recommend watching that one after finishing this episode in fact. Indeed, the target was Sailor Mars for seemingly the purposes of information retrieval and her bland ass is carted away. Yea, not going to lie, Stoic Rei just isn't doing it for me. Finally, holy shit, they allowed normal humans to get screen time, they should enjoy it while it lasts because in both universes that was fading quickly.

This was definitely a good start. One of the better episodes so far!

Too bad there was nothing new in the ED :(

As much as I'm not a fan of Crystal, that Tumblr blog is pretty irrational and ridiculous. Surely they have made some decent points but honestly, they bashed a garage kit figure. It's obvious they don't know what they're doing, they're just looking for faults. It's pretty childish. I wouldn't take their posts any serious. But I admit some of it is a bit funny.

They kept doubling down when people called them out on it too.

Those bloggers must have no life at all. It's like trying to prove that Family Guy is bad by pointing out the animation goofs.

Well, the animation issues haven't really changed (no surprise there), but overall it felt like a pretty decent adaptation of the manga chapter. For once they didn't change it so everything was super serious, although that seemed to start at the end of last episode. In any case, enough for me to at least continue watching for now.

I'm surprised that they didn't keep Koan around, as I really did think they were going to pull another Shitennou. Animation seems to have improved finally, which is a good thing! Overall, I liked this episode and looking forward to more Black Moon :)

They didn't keep Usagi foaming at the mouth in response to being "shot" by ChibiUsa

I wonder this is what it feels like to cry....

(I joke)

Here are some new details about AnimeJapan.

Sailor Moon Special Event at AnimeJapan 2015 gift & stage performance decision:

Green Stage, Sailor Moon Crystal performance/stage apperance:
- 5 senshi cast (Sailor Moon Crystal senshi voice actors)
- Kotono Mitsuishi (Usagi)
- Kenji Nojima (Tuxedo Mask)
- Munehisa Sakai (Crystal Director)
- Fumio Osano (Osabu)

They will talk about the TV broadcasting, "confidential anime production story", up-to-date information, and it says they're planning on delivering a lot program (for the event).
There will also be a Kodansha Toei Animation booth at the venue. It also sounds like they plan on displaying something new there that will be put on the official website with details soon after.

Date: March 12th, 2015
Place: Tokyo Big Sight, "AnimeJapan 2015" Green Stage
Cast: (Here it actually says the 5 senshi will be the voice actors!)
- Mitsuishi Kotono (Sailor Moon)
- Kenji Nojima (Tuxedo Mask)
- Hisako Kanemoto (Sailor Mercury)
- Rina Sato (Sailor Mars)
- Koshimizu Ami (Sailor Jupiter)
- Ito Shizuka (Sailor Venus)
- Munehisa Sakai (Crystal Director)
- Osabu

Unfortunately the attendance on this particular event is based on a lottery ticket system, so this will 100% likely not be streamed anywhere. You will have to rely on tweets from people who are there in order to get a "live feed" on what is being announced and said until they put the information online after the event.

Unrelated, more pictures of the new figs:

Sailor Moon Crystal on TV:

It will air on may channels, and here is the schedule:
http://sailormoon-official.com/animation/onair/
(Tokyo MX, TV Hokkaido, TV Aichi, Sun TV, TVQ Kyushu & BS11)

You probably don't need to know Japanese to understand the schedule. But in case someone is confused, it's YYYY/MM/DD and those are the start dates (April) for each channel.

Also, this page confirms Crystal on TV will be Blu-ray version.
http://sailormoon-official.com/animation/news/crystal_226

Black Moon will air on Niconico like normal.

I would ask why they simply didn't delay it to them and skip all this nonsense with the Half Baked web version but then I realised that Toei would have fucked up even if they had all the tea in china.

So I caught up with the first season of Crystal a few days ago.

I think I mentioned a while back that I was super-hyped for this show, but after two or three episodes I just turned the computer off and walked away. But then, after my expectations had a chance to settle downwards, I braced for the worst and started watching again, and I found myself enjoying it. Lowered expectations really helped. And then it started to get even better. And by the end I found myself disliking it again. I think it's because I allowed myself to get a little excited. I should have kept my guard up.

Anyways, one thing that I was thinking was that this show didn't seem to know what it wanted to be. Like it wants to be based on the manga, but it also wants to be based on the 90's anime. It wants to be set in 1992, but it also wants to be set in 2014. It can't seem to decide, so it just makes little adjustments here and there. That was just a sense I got, although I might have imagined it, since I was trying pretty hard not to think.

Anyways, to keep this rambling train of thought going, since this show seemed to want to be like the 90's anime (or at least pay fanservice to it), I thought that this show really should have opened with Moonlight Densetsu, even if it was just for the one episode. A remake of the song would be appropriate. And then I remembered... didn't I just hear an official remake of Moonlight Densetsu somewhat recently?

Yes, I did.

It sounds really good, if you ask me. It was done by... Momoiro Clover Z? The same group that sings Moon Pride for the opening of Crystal? Why the heck was this not used? It would've been great to have the first episode kick off with a remake of the original song, followed by something original (Moon Pride) from the exact same people. I can't imagine it would cost anything more, or create any licensing nightmares.

And then I spotted Momoiro Clover Z's official music video for Moon Pride.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0Va228UhRs

I think it was put together while Crystal was in production, because it has some beautiful 2D animation that Toei probably considered using before going with something cheaper, as well as some creepy CG that looks like it was rejected from Crystal. Apologies if this is old.

Incidentally, "Seluhr Muhrs" probably existed in pitch material created before the actual show was made, since she appears in the video.

"Here's an example of my idea to use computers for transformations and attacks."
"Perfect, we'll use that. Send it down to editing."
"Umm... it wasn't finished."
"You can clean it up for the Blu-ray."

Why on earth would they wanna use an old theme for a new anime though? I mean even if it's a remake/reboot/degrading version of the original manga, I think I would jump off a cliff if they added it Crystal. Pretty sure most of us (at least those who have seen 90s) are pretty tired of Moonlight Densetsu already.

The Momoiro Moonlight Densetsu cover was made for the first musical, actually. It's not really an "official remake" per say, it's more of an official cover. I believe it was in the Crystal CD release too. Anyway, new anime deserves new music.

--

Also, kinda OT from your reply, but I'm predicting some new movies coming soon/later. I wonder if they will say/hint to anything regarding movies during AnimeJapan. Perhaps the want to wait until Crystal season 2 starts. I'd guess remakes too. Same shit with new animation, or something. Meh. lol

So, Mamoru plays with himself in this version too :p

Some Chibi-Usa backstory is revealed, everything becomes about chess and then Ami gets kidnapped too.

Went really fast from getting to know about the chess tournament to the actual playing.

Hmm, so they cut out a certain Mamoru scene here. I know this is meant to be an Ami-centric episode, but given what happens to Mamoru later on in this arc, I feel like it should have still been in here.

I like how they handled the chess match here more than the comic and 90's anime did, since the comic kinda skimmed over it and the 90s anime went a different route.

Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 16:

I have come to the conclusion that Chibi-Usa is uniformly awful and watching this series try to give her character development that is tedium that will put me back to sleep for a good hour. That aside this was a much better episode then last time and roughly on par with the 1990s anime series equivalent. Not as good since that episode was all about the duality of Berthier and Ami on the road to the former's redemption. Ami still has roughly the same arc though as we see how far she has come from the depths of loneliness and isolation thanks to her friends. Though given that this series does not have 40 plus episode seasons character development for the Scouts is much more rarefied and is welcome when it can be found.

Standing by itself, a pretty decent episode. As usual, it cuts out huge sections of stuff involving non-core characters and replaces that with an actual chess match, although the chess player in me wonders how a full match could play out with that kind of banter, both in nature and in time, but I realize worrying about that is a fool's errand. Outside of the honestly out of character episode introducing Minako, this is the only other time in Crystal I can think of where they've actually inserted additional characterization for a senshi rather than removed it or changed it (Minako again).

I really liked the episode today. Well, except for that derp shot of Rubius' curled mouth at the end when he beamed up Mercury... Just a really weird angle. What's up with these weird angles?

LMAO at Berthier not even bothering disguising herself other than wearing some flimsy jacket. Not even hiding her moon symbol lmao was it the same in the manga?

In manga, when she's "undercover" she's wearing a short dress with a belt over her costume; she looses it when she starts the fight. Also, her black moon symbol is hidden (although even during the fight her moon is visible in some panels and not there in others). It's weird that they changed it in the anime.

The episode itself was really good. Nice pacing, a lot of focus on Ami and the chess match and an interesting fight. But reading the manga chapter after watching the episode reveals how much was changed. And they changed a lot. In the manga:
- after the abduction of Mars Sailor Venus and Jupiter rush to Moon and Mercury to tell them that they need to change back to their normal attires, because people are "crowding around"
- Ami and Makoto run an investigation on Black Moon and Rei's disappearance at the Paranormal Activities Club
- Motoki is shown that he knows about Scouts' true identities
- that blonde guy that Makoto introduced to girls in last episode becomes suspicious about girls and Mamoru
- he also recollects seeing Mamoru heal himself

That a lot of scenes cut from the episode, and most of them is about the relationship of Scouts with other - normal - people (Motoki knows about them; that blonde student suspects them; Scouts hide their true identities from other people and investigate their enemies in private etc.).

I'm also surprised that some new humorous scenes were added. Given that in the first season almost all humor was cut off, that was a nice change.

I was fine with her not being disguised, the Black Moon Symbol means nothing to the public and she wasn't trying to hide from the senshi, she wanted to confront Ami.

Hehe, makes sense. :p I figured she'd want to wear something more....erm, normal for a public event like that....oh well!

Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 17:

Ah, yes a pattern is emerging is it not. Quite frankly I think the first anime had it right
when they got rid of the captured sailor scouts sub-plot but that is neither here nor there.
Anyway as per the title we actually get some character development for Makoto, a rarefied thing considering this is the same show that literally forgot she was part of the team at one point. Also, hello random love interest, your sudden prominence is jarring. Another thing I think the 1990s anime did better was integrating the cast among normal humans and doing everyday things but then again they had the space for it. Anyway, we learn that Makoto has a love of plants that would make Poison Ivy blush and that her parent died in a plane cash. This does open up all sorts of questions that I am sure I am not supposed to be asking, but the one I can't ignore is how is she able to get procure and afford to live in that apartment of hers? Anyway, pretty bog standard episode, I think I skimmed through this chapter of the manga.

A pretty straight translation from the manga, especially compared to last episode. Not much to say, really. This was always the weakest part of Black Moon in the manga and that doesn't seem to have changed.

Well if her parents died, I'm thinking it's an inheritance. The plants are probably due to her being lonely, thus being something to take care of. I mean, instead of having a bunch of cats. Plus along with electricity being her element, so are plants. That, I've always had a hard time figuring out how plants are related to Jupiter. It's a stormy planet, so yeah I don't get the other connection. Maybe some other lore I'm unaware of?

As for the episode, I really liked this one! Plus it's Jupiter <3
