The Story So Far
The game is set five years after the events of Saints Row. The protagonist was betrayed by former 3rd Street Saints, who detonated a bomb aboard a yacht he was also on. Then-mayoral candidate Alderman Hughes was killed, along with his personal servants in the explosion, however, the protagonist suffered severe injuries and slipped into a trauma-induced coma, only to be taken away and put into a dingy prison hospital ward.

Meanwhile, the 3rd Street Saints, who had conquered Stilwater in Saints Row, have fallen apart. Former leader of the Saints, Julius Little, has abandoned his crew and slipped into the shadows. Johnny Gat has been captured by police and awaits the electric chair, after being convicted of three hundred and eighty seven counts of murder and attempting to assassinate Troy Bradshaw once Gat learned that Troy was an undercover cop. Lin is dead. Dex went into hiding the night of the yacht explosion. Undercover police officer Troy Bradshaw, who was tasked with undermining the Saints, has risen through the ranks and has been promoted to Chief of Police, after the demise of former Police Chief Monroe.

Singleplayer
Singleplayer is about 40 missions long, which you can play in Coop if you want to. Aside from the main story, you have alot of activities to play, so it's not like if you finish the main story you'll have nothing to do. All the activites & missions give you some unlockables like guns, cribs new styles etc.

New features
11goeg8.jpg

-Smart GPS that learns the shortcuts you take (against traffic, down alleys, through fences, whatever) and adds it automatically.
-Cruise control toggle so you can do drive-bys easier.

combat features:
-Human shields:
Grab an enemy (or friend) and use him as a bullet sponge while you fire from safety. Then, when he's served his purpose, you can push/throw him away or execute him. Note, blocks most bullets.. .

-Melee Combat:
Use your fists to show everyone who's the boss. After landing 3 clean hits, your character automatically does a finishing attack which is based on your chosen fighting style and still varies. In addition to the usual button combos, you can hold the attack button(s) to charge and unleash high powered attacks. Combine with melee weapons such as the Katana for devastating finishing moves.

Wanted Levels:
Police are alerted when the player commits crimes, dispatched to the scene of the crime in order to deal with the perpetrator.
-Level 1: Police rely on non-lethal means to deal with law violators, using standard nightsticks, Tasers and pepper spray.
-Level 2:Cops are actively searching for the offender, dispatching standard squad cars, and also police boats and helicopters if the chase leads to the sea or sky. Though still relying on non-lethal means, if the player opens fire on the police, they will respond appropriately.
-Level 3:Negotiation and arrest are no longer options. Human shields, even if they are police, will not be spared, as the police are now desperately trying to get rid of the player. At three stars, roadblocks are established, and police helicopters dispatch SWAT officers to help deal with the perpetrator.
-Level 4: The Tornado helicopter is introduced into the battle, unleashing torrents of firepower.
-Level 5: The FBI are called in and will use any means necessary to deal with the criminal.

Voice Talent:
Some of the VO cast includes:
Keith David- Julius
Daniel Dae Kim- Johnny Gat
Michael Dorn- Maero
Neil Patrick Harris- DJ Veteran Child
Eliza Dushku- Shaundi
Jaime Pressly- Jessica
Michael Rapaport- Troy

Weapons:
You'll have the usual array of weapons ranging from handguns to SMGs to Assault Rifles to Rocket Launchers and Miniguns. Many old favorites from the first return with new uses as dual-weilding is not an option on handguns and SMGs.

New weapons include chainsaws, sledgehammers, flamethrowers, katanas, stun guns and shock pads. Satchel charges are introduced, and can stick to walls, vehicles and even people.

Also, players/npcs/enemies can now pick up and use objects from the environment as melee weapons. Including garden gnomes, cement blocks, barrels, 2x4s etc. Basically, whatever you think you can use.. you can probably use it. Hell, even things you didn't think you could use such as mail boxes and fire hydrants can be ripped right out of the ground and used to inflict pain on your enemies.

Additionally, over half a dozen unannounced weapons can be unlocked throughout the game.

  • Reclaim Your Turf: Rebuild the Saints and seek revenge against rivals to reestablish your crew as the rightful kings of Stilwater.
  • Make Your Mark: Customize your crib, recruit your gang, and set your swagger using countless combinations of character configuration.
  • Demand Your Respect: Protect yourself with human shields, throw rivals into oncoming traffic and zero-in your nut-shot using all-new Fine Aim controls.
  • Jack Your Ride: Build your empire with private jets, speedboats, and helicopters or strafe the hood of your rival's monster truck from the comfort of your fighter plane.
  • Own Your Hood: Discover both the familiar and strange in a revitalized Stilwater as you taunt, mug and streak your way through the city.
  • Grab Your Piece: Send a message to your enemies using an arsenal of rocket launchers, shock-paddles, stun-guns, and satchel-charges.
  • Online: Complete the campaign in two-player co-op.

Multiplayer & Full Story Coop
Saints Row 2 now features Co-op. When playing Co-op the enemy NPC's will get scaled up with some more health to counter the difficulty of Co-op vs. playing alone.
As for competitive vs. online games modes a Moderator on SaintsRow.com forums confirmed that the only game modes will be "Gangsta Brawl, Team Gangsta Brawl" (a basic deathmatch and team version), as well as a new mode called Strong Arm.
Strong Arm: 2 teams will do various objectives that are featured in Single Player but have to earn more money than the Opposing team, while the 2 teams may interfere with each other.

Activities
flying_in_saints_row_2239.jpg

Saints Row 2 includes eleven of the twelve activities from Saints Row, including :All returning activities have been touched up slightly, and feel slightly different to what they originally were. In Saints Row, activities spanned out over eight progressing difficulty levels however, in Saints Row 2, activities span out over six. The protagonist also gains unlockables like strength and stamina upgrades, weapon enhancements etc for completing every three and six levels of each activity.

As well as the old activities from Saints Row, six new activities are available for the player to participate in. Each activity has also been designed to suit co-operative play.

A fully 3D survival horror game can be played at arcades and television across the city. The game, titled Zombie Uprising , sees the player in a dark, zombie-filled setting, and must eliminate these zombies in waves using a limited number of weapons. Fellow survivors also aid the player in the fight. If a zombie manages to latch on to the protagonist, a Resident Evil-like button mashing pushback, where the protagonist knocks back the attacker if the button is pressed in succession.

Diversions are mini-activities in the Saints Row world, which can be performed any time, any where. Diversions involve the player carry out small actions eg pulling stunts in vehicles, BASE jumping, streajubg and more. Minor criminal misbehaviours also count as diversions, taking hostages, hijacking vehicles, theft etc.

Customization
sr2_04lg.jpg

You can customize the hell out of this game, ofcourse you have the main character which you can totally customize. You can create a man, a woman or even a tranny! Perfect for GAF ;). Vehicle Customization has also been expanded.

The customization options in Saints Row 2 are far more in-depth than that of Saints Row's. Many new customization features have been included in the game to give the player more control over the character.

Character customization has been expanded beyond the original Saints Row. New customization options give the player more control over their character. Saints Row 2 gives the player the option of playing as a female, unlike in Saints Row, where the player was forced to play as a male. Additionally, the player can customize the character's appearance even further. The player is now given the option of customizing the character's age and weight, as well as their voice, walk, fighting style, taunts, facial expression and weapon holding. Height modification for the player was originally in development, but was later cut due to difficulties and glitches.

Clothing and apparel customization has also been modified to become more in-depth. The player is given a wide variety of clothing to wear. Customizing clothes gives the player more choice over how they wear their clothes, with additional coloring and layout designs. Also, there is a broader range of tattoos, which can now be applied to the face, and jewelery. The player can also save outfits in their crib and reload them for later use.

Crib and gang customization have been introduced as new features in Saints Row 2. The player can customize the 3rd Street Saints and the nine cribs they can dwell in.
Cribs cannot be simply bought, but are unlocked at certain points in the game. The player can choose from three pre-set styles; cheap (rundown and dilapidated), classy (well furbished with basic walls and floors) and ultra-modern (stylishly decorated interior design). Additionally, the player can fully furnish the crib, with a wide array of items, such as pool tables, minibars, pianos, lounges, TVs, Strippers and more.

Cribs serve as locations to hang out with fellow Saints, save the game, change clothes, access a weapon stash and customize the 3rd Street Saints. In terms of customizing the player's gang, a variety of clothing styles can be applied to the gang. Also, the gang sign and graffiti tag can be chosen and the player can equip the gang with certain vehicles.

Want to make a Ninja Gang? Oh you can ;).

I'm really looking forward to this game, almost as much as GOW2. I thought the first game was fantastic. By all accounts, this game should be even better.

Hey, from my question you could tell I read the OP! :p
And meh, I was never really into hijacking either, don't mind that they took that one out. Just wish they'd taken out escort too, that shit was frustrating as hell to me. :lol

a week ago I didn't plan on picking this up, but this is starting to look like a day one purchase.

The original was awesome!

It seems like enough dutch guys will be playing this :)

Some random guy on youtube did a Video Review by the way :).

Nice. Just as good as anything the pro sites have ever put out.

This guy seems distraught that the community side of multiplayer is taken out (persistent player gangs)... I never used that stuff but I agree with his complaints although he basically flat out says "do not buy this game if you are just getting it for multiplayer" because of it. Wish he had gone into more detail about what options are available. From the brief menus it looks like you can still get a party together and play with your friends, that and co-op are good enough for me.

I hope they will patch that stuff in at a later date, because it was a cool feature to have. Could use some more modes, too.

Anyway, got myself a few best buy gift cards saved up and have decided to use them to get this on day 1. :)

great thread, I'm really looking forward to the game. I kept the original and now I'll get the sequel to join it on my shelf.
I hope the coop is great, sandbox games are so much more fun with other people. coop turned the turd Mercs2 into a fun game, I'm sure it will make this game even better.

Thanks for the info about the music stations e.d

Although I'm probably going to be dissapointed in the hiphop department of the game. While checking out some youtube videos I heard some Young Jeezy and 50 cent shit.

jesus.

The first game had one of the dopest hiphop osts of any game, including wu tang & MF doom...But I guess they wanted a wider audience so 50 cent ( pukes ) makes sense.

This game keeps looking better and better in my eyes, I might get this game if after a few weeks.

I'll agree with you but I think a LOT of people hated the music in the first one and loved GTA:SA et al which was a lot more mainstream music IMO.

With luck they implemented the in-game player again so it was very quick and easy to stream in your own music (without even having to visit the dashboard).

the original game was one of the first to implement their own music player.

Well, we still don't know the full soundtrack list, so who knows.

Plus, if it comes right down to it, you can also just set up your in-game playlist and add/remove whatever you want OR the usual 360 custom soundtrack feature and play your own mp3s or whatever. <3

Whoas zombie minigame! I was hoping it'd be like a citywide game mode.. I've been jonesing for a GTA style zombie takeover game for years and years.. but it'll do for some fun. Perhaps it is multiplayer? Perhaps? Anyone? Anyone?

Yeah that's true, but I still think it's kind of stupid :p.

Anyway if I forgot anything just let me know, I'll try to add it :).

Mayhem looks insane and has a great stable framerate as far as I can see.

So excited for this. After GTA disappointed, merc's 2 disappointed, I'm hoping we finally get a sandbox game I can really get into. Hopefully I can get this, Dead Space and NBA2k9 next week on that Toys R Us dilly-o. :D

Oh, and even though it's from the first, how dare the OP not included pimpcanestrut.gif? What the hell, man?!

On that note, it better be in this one.

Yep. The choice of rap and hip hop was probably the best i've heard in a game.

The rap/hip hop station's in GTA:IV are so disappointing.

Well that guy probably has the illegal version, so he can't go online with it anyway. He's probably just pissed that they took out gangs. As I didn't bother too much with the multiplayer in the original game, I don't mind that much.

Although gangs was pretty sweet.

Anyone know any differences between PS3 and 360 (in terms of which one runs better). I have both so doesn't really affect me, but if you can install on PS3 then I'm guessing there'll be less pop-up and stuff.

Soon both systems will have the ability to install to HD making it come down to which pad or which version your friends will be playing.

Well I guess we won't know untill launch day.

Which will run better, I'll take a wild guess and say the Xbox version. Since they already have experience working on that particular platform.

But it's a guess. Don't forget the first rule :).

Optional installs are comin for the 360, donät know if it will be out before this game is released though.

I don't know if installing the game will significantly help with pop in either ways.

New dashboard + game installation etc isn't until Nov, so nope.

It'll obviously help any streaming related pop in though. Which is better than nothing. Still, from what I've seen so far, pop in isn't even that big an issue.

I love the first game (still playing it for activities!), but unfortunately, SR2 isn't one of the several games I'm buying this season. I've already got too much. :(

I've wondered something about the story
why exactly is the main character helping the 3rd Street Saints again? They betrayed him and left him for dead, yet he chooses to help them rebuild. I guess we might found out from playing the game or is it something that's already known?

The Saints didn't,
Julius and Troy (duh)
did.

Didn't see the option to only have a certain sex in the customization vid. However, you can always do what I did in the first anyway and only recruit the women to help you.

Just make sure they're the only ones in the recruiting range when you "call" or even easier, during a gunfight just let all the guys die. Then you'll only have women left :lol

I'm surprised Volition hasn't said anything about a demo. At this point I don't expect one, but I thought the demo for the first game really helped drive sales.

It's possible to make, yes. We haven't said if we're going to or not, but it's definitely possible. We did it for the first one and it was really really good for us. We're definitely looking into doing that. Our main focus right now is making sure we get the game looking hot. After that we look into getting a demo out during out Microsoft submission time or PlayStation submission time. Usually with game companies you submit to them a couple of months before the final product and you have time between there to decide if you want to or not. I think it depends. PlayStation owners would definitely like to see it and have hands on, because it really sold the Xbox for us, having a demo I think. Especially as PlayStation hasn't had a hands-on, it would be beneficial. We're definitely looking at doing that. It's on our radar right now. It just depends what the big bosses at Volition and THQ decide. I think there are studies that came out like two or three weeks ago where they said that actually demos don't help sales. Which is tough for developers, as we want to give it to people too. With our game we have a fun enough game and a sandbox experience that people are only going to buy it because of that. As long as that stays the same we definitely want to do it.
http://www.videogamer.com/ps3/saints_row_2/preview-1128.html

Obviously, I wouldn't expect one until post launch. If ever.

Very positive Eurogamer hands on

Within minutes, you're back in Stilwater, starting bar brawls, stealing cars and gate-crashing the court-room, where one of your faithful lieutenants is standing trial. Right from the outset, there's no question of being anyone's minion. You're a gang boss - and okay, your gang might need to be whipped back into shape, but you used to rule this city, and that's your objective once again.

The game is fast, frantic and funny. Physics is tweaked to be fun, rather than realistic - cars and motorbikes (yes, it has motorbikes) travel at impressive speeds, blow up in very satisfying ways and are an arcade-style joy to handle. Your character is a criminal superman, with a recharging health bar and tons of stamina; you're far from being immortal, but there's no question that you're a videogame anti-hero, rather than a small-time thief. And if you're thinking this all sounds a bit like Crackdown, then yeah, we were too. Which is a very good thing.

Perhaps the most appealing aspect of Saints Row 2, however - more appealing even than the dark humour, the creative swearing, the carnage and the combat, more appealing even than the ability to play as a fat tranny - will be the co-operative play. It's fully drop-in, drop-out. What that means in real terms is that you can take your single-player character, hop into someone else's game, complete some missions with them, and then hop back out to your own single-player game. The missions you completed and items you picked up in co-op stay with you - and you're not bound to that game session. You can happily go off and join someone else's session straight away if you want.

The whole game is co-op-enabled, from story missions and activities to the city itself. You don't have to stick together during co-op, either - it's entirely possible to play on opposite ends of the city, and the game will sync up perfectly when you get back together. You don't even have to be friendly - kill your co-op partner and when he's resurrected he'll have the option of turning the tables on you by launching an impromptu deathmatch.

Having been a GTA clone last time, Saints Row 2 is now shaping up to be the anti-GTA - or at least, the anti-GTA IV. This is an openworld crime game about neon lights, huge explosions, fast cars, massive body counts and crazy rival gangs like the Ronin, a Japanese band of cyber-punk samurai, and the Sons of Samedi, a voodoo obsessed Caribbean drug cartel. Our expectations weren't particularly high when we went to see it, but having played the game for several hours, those same expectations have skyrocketed. For those left cold by GTA IV, this is shaping up to be the openworld game you've been waiting for, and even for those who were charmed by Niko's Liberty City adventure, Saints Row 2 is a welcome blast of mayhem and bright lights.

Will probably check this out with it hits the $30-$40 range. Not in a huge rush to play it but if it truly is like the anti-GTA4 then its got to be pretty good.

I seem to remember liking some rock songs in SR.

Didn't it have Dredg on the soundtrack?
