Sakurai essay in EDGE on appealing to all types of gamers with the new Smash Bros.

My reaction to the letter :P

In all realness, it was thoughtful. Definitely getting both games. My friends are hyped as well. We will be talking to much sh** to each other in these games.

Prog is compiling impressions on his Twitter feed, all rave reviews so far.

Demo impressions from pro players are coming in.

Looks like some people owe Sakurai an apology.
What does that have to do with Smash 4?

Just eat your crow with grace.
Are you serious? Impressions from a couple of hours in a demo with five characters are almost as irrelevant as impressions from the E3 build. Not saying that Smash 4 won't be good (it more than likely will be) but you can calm down a bit with the smug attitude before the full game is even known.

This thread is littered with posts declaring with certainty that the game would be a "slightly modified Brawl." I don't think it's too early to bring out the crow.

I know he said thus far and all but... That's a weird thing to say still lol

If this is what you can do with only a few minutes with 5 characters, then logically the full game should offer even more. There has been quite some negativity from certain people with each new update, and while the game might not be to their melee competitive standards I'm pretty damn sure it will hold it's own as a great installment in the series. Crows will be eaten, mark my words!

People are being really daft with their opinions of this game in the pre-honeymoon phase. Comboing a low level CPU is no indication of the game's combo capacities and you can't get any sense of balance with 5 freaking characters. Being able to double laser with Mega Man is meaningless in the grand scheme if the very engine itself doesn't allow for broad applications of it.

Namco is a far better developer for fighting games than Game Arts .

I have no doubt in my mind that Smash 4 will be a great game.

I don´t think the Melee diehards will ever be satisfied though. Just look at some of those rather extreme responses in this thread.

More... what? That's not really a complete thought.

Fighting games, Smash included, are a huge ball of complexities and intricacies. It's not just the mechanics that matter; it's how those mechanics interact with other mechanics. You can't judge things in a vacuum. In Brawl, Ness may seem like a somewhat competent character at first, but as soon as your opponent picks Marth, everything you thought you knew becomes meaningless. Even once the full game is out, we still won't know everything because it takes time before people start figuring out what the dominant strategies are. If chaingrabs were somehow never discovered, Brawl would have been a better game.

I want to reiterate that I'm not saying that Smash 4 will be bad, or that some gamebreaking exploit is going to be found. Sakurai's stressed that this game has been tested a lot more thoroughly than Brawl, so we probably don't have much to worry about. I'm just saying that jumping to conclusions doesn't help anybody, regardless of if they're negative or positive.

Does this discussion really have much to do with Sakurai's comments? I mean the game being good doesn't necessarily stop people from disagreeing with what he said.

Balance-wise sure, there's no telling how the full game will be balanced just by judging the demo, but alot of the negativity with this game has been with the mechanics "No combos, not a true fighter" ,"slow as brawl" "landing lag everywhere" etc. We are now seeing some of these things being proven wrong.

I admit that I'm also jumping to conclusions but it is looking good so far.

I don't think anybody is going to complain if the initial concerns turned out wrong.

Impressions of the retail demos are definitely better than those from E3 though.

I know you're being sarcastic, but Smash is one of those games were it's really hard to tell if what you have is a real combo or not because of the many ways to escape.

Well, you can't do that in Brawl, and it's not that hard to tell in this instance (plus there have been 1v1 streams). The hit stun isn't Melee level but it gives you enough.

I can understand people trying to save themselves from disappointment regarding the metagame, but it wouldn't hurt to acknowledge that they do indeed existent in this game.

I know at least on streamer was certain that he could DI.

There's no way that combo is guaranteed and wouldn't be landed on any conscious individual. It's great that hitstun has obviously been increased and followups are possible - something known since E3 - but Melee Mario couldn't get guaranteed combos like that for crissakes.

Once we start getting known, guaranteed combos, then we can formulate real opinions about the game's combo capacity and it will give us a better idea of what the game is overall. That's all my last post was saying. No childlike hyperbole expressed with autistic caps lock necessary.

Sorry I'm too old and jaded to need something substantial to get excited about regarding a Smash game.

*shrug*

Yeah, I agree we'd need to see competent people try local play to do these combos because I wouldn't put my faith in a CPU (level 1 or 9) to actively try and do stuff.

Looks good though, but that's a little caveat.

Now THAT'S more convincing.

First thing I'm going to do when I get my hands on the game tonight is try and escape those up tilt combos.
