Salt and Sanctuary |OT| Salt for the Soul

Given how rare it is to find weapons (I think I found maybe two and they were both spears) I think the starting class matters a whole bunch in these kinds of games. From what I can tell your options are super limited early on, so finding the right class for the early game will make it a lot more enjoyable.

Granted I haven't played much, but I've gotten past the first boss and I haven't seen any abundance of armor or weapons.

I see weapons at the shop, but I can't use any. I think I much prefer the Dark Souls system of determining which items you can use based off of your stats and not ability nodes. I like being able to switch weapons as I find them, I don't want to be locked into one or two types of weapons for my whole playthrough (unless I grind a whole bunch I suppose).

its not rare to find weapons at all tho, Ive found a bunch in my 8 hours. You just need to explore

You find the Kureimoa really early on and it's a great weapon that can be transmuted into several bigger swords (or left as is and upgraded), so it's good for a tank or paladin build. You also find a mace early on, and you can keep upgrading/transmuting that one too.

Both of these weapons can be obtained after killing just one boss, IIRC.

Finally stuck with the knight for a while and I'm doing alright now. The pole-arm you get early on is good, especially now that I can 1 hand it. Beat the
Queen of Smiles
on my first go and then immediately died 4 times trying to get through the forest because fuck platforming with projectiles and flying enemies. I know they're going for difficulty and I get that, but I much prefer my platforming to be done with floaty jumps like in Metroid or SOTN. The jumping is really stiff and your air control amounts to "fall super fast with an attack".

And yeah, I got the claymore too, but it eats through my whole stamina bar in 2 swings so I'm not using it. I can get 4 stabs with the polearm in one bar and the damage isn't that much lower.

I want to go back to my axe because I find slash attacks much more satisfying than hammers, but the dmg difference is so big :(

And the item to transmute to a rank 3 greataxe is apparently from a enemy in a zone I havent been in :/

Bear in mind boss resistances too. Some bosses just take no damage from slash and take all the damage from blunt, and vice versa.

And elemental buffs make huge differences. Dunno what creed you are but most if not every creed will give you infinitely restocking buffs if you choose them as your rewards for working for the npc summoned by offering Stone Leaders.

How is the combat system for fans of their Dishwasher games?

Never played their previous games but the combat here is reminiscent of the Souls series.

I've heard one of their previous games is kind of like a side scrolling Devil May Cry. This is definitely NOT that. It's much slower/more deliberate.

I havent used a elemental buff at all yet and I didnt change creeds so I guess im justbthe default one? I dont understand that system but I never got into the covenents in the souls games either

Rough length of a single play through?

NG mode or after game?

I hear aomewherw between 15 to 30 hours depending on how much you explore and how good you are. Im at 8 hours and about 1 third of the way looking at how many locations ive been at in the wiki.

And there is NG+ yes, im not sure if you keep your abilities tho, im guessing not, probably just your stats and items

P
Hmmm. I've only played a bit of demon souls and the first dark souls and don't recall there being much to combat.

If you said yes to the first creed the guy at the start asks you, you're in the creed of The Three.

What item do you put on the sanctuaries you claim? Is it like a candle holder with 3 candles?

If yes, then cool, because that creed can get both lightning AND fire buffs that infinitely restock every time you rest.

Yes thats the one. I dont get how the worker...well works. It said he will stock things if you give him items, I chose the health flask the first time thinking it would give me a extra one but it didnt >_>

It should have given you an extra one. You probably didn't notice because it wouldn't have given it to you until you rested again. But the permanent sanctuary upgrades only affect sanctuaries of that creed, so if you're of The Three and you sit down at water lady, you won't have the permanent upgrades.

Just keep giving him items and he gives permanent upgrades. Including the elemental buffs.

i finished this masterpiece on the ps4 when it came out and i enjoyed it much more than Dark souls 3 because it gave me a new experience and a huge variety of bosses not just Dude in armor bosses like in Dark souls 3

Going out on a limb here, but I have a steam gift and maybe a couple game keys that I would so trade for this.

I tried trading in normal methods but think people are not looking for either as I found like only four people.

Its all downhill after him. Hardest boss in the game.

well he's dead. I got to the sanctuary in the next zone but I dont have the fast travel merchant bah. One of the few things I dont like about the game, just let me fast travel everywhere damn it. I want to go back and look for the mad alchemist but now I dont want to leave this zone and not be able to get back fast :/

edit: I dont have the watching woods sanctuary, so either I skipped the zone somehow (guide doesnt say its optional) or I guess I didnt find it? no wonder I didnt find the alchemist either

EDIT: yeah dont know how I missed tht the first time around. He was super easy at my level. And speaking of super easy,
Untouched Inquisitor
? more like rekt
inquisitor
lol, so easy. making good progress now :)

Played a little bit last night and beat the first boss. How do I heal though? I must be missing something, is it just with items?

Fireballs wrecked that first boss.

you picked up 3 "estus flasks" in the first sanctuary, you have to equip/select them. its big round red flasks. in the skill tree you can get more

Untouched inquisitor is super easy.

The other boss in that area is slightly harder. But now you beat
pirate man
the rest of the game is super easy if a certain late game boss doesn't spam you from off screen

I had a rough time with the optional one in Cran's Pass or whatever its called

I guess that is what I was using, just thought it was a normal item that I had used up.

Can you use the "Homeward Bone" during boss fights?

damn this
Dried King
boss destroyed me O_o hmm

edit: hah couldnt deal with my blacksmith fire defense set tho! :D I like how these elemental dfense sets are actually useful

Whats the difference between the the religions that you choose from at the start? Is it just flavor or do you get differences between the healing items that you get and the sanctuaries that you make?

I'm rolling with the Three right now after trying out the other two and I haven't noticed any differences except that the cleric in the second sanctuary won't sell me anything.

Lots of differences. See the details here:

Ya, don't worry. There is no wrong answer but if you are trying for trophies, it is a different story as you have to join them all and maxone out in devotion.

I cant get out of Ruined Temple lol. I mean I can, but I cant find the way either to the optional Pitchwood or the story progression something lake. wtf :D

I have the
air dash
now and the dude told me to go back to the ruined temple but man ive lopped around and cant find anything I havent done

edit; found it

The Witch of the Lake is the most bullshit boss in the game. Floating (half damage when jumping), offscreen attacks, homing missiles, etc. I died like 10 times to her.

Time for a brag (this is on my first character, dex build):

>_>

Note, I wasn't level 140 when I killed her in NG, I just took this shot right before trying her again in NG+ to compare, and so in the interest of transparency, here is my NG+ result, right after:

Sorry, I can see how she'd be a problem but yeah... even in NG+ she only killed me 3 times which isn't so bad especially since dex, well, is underpowered as hell in general. ^^ My mage wrecked her even more, and my str build died maybe 3-4 times to her at the most, so I find it funny how my experience differs from everyone else. Same with the Husk, he rarely killed me across my 4 characters but everyone bitches about him.

I pretty much one shotted every boss in the game, maybe died 2-3 times to one or two of them, but no joke, Witch of the Lake wrecked me.

all this talk about one shotting bosses... I die to most bosses motherfuckers! ;_;

actually I just one shot Bloodless Prince or whatever hes called, that big dude

edit: noooooooooooooooooooooo The Coveted is a rank 5 greataxe so you cant 1 hand it.

WHAT THE FUCK AT THESE
UNICORNS IN PITCHWOOD

really disapointed at the weight of the later greatweapons, wy too heavy. Just farmed a crypt keeper ash to transmute either my axe or hammer to the rank 4 ones, and it jumos like 16 and 20 pounds respectively, thats stupid for how little dmg increase they give. and with the awful respec system, its not like I can change now. Oh well guess Ill stilck with my rank 3 stuff

edit: meh mals hidden castle boss didnt give me souls, guess it bugged out :/

edit: died s much against the witch of the lake that im actually out of gold now lol

triple post I dont even care!

Finished the game, well technically I killed the last boss, im farming some salt and whatnot to transmute these last few weapons before jumping to NG+. I guess I will go with the bad ending because I want that sick looking armor, I mean assuming I didnt fuck up any of the scarecrow encounters.

anyway amazing game, was everything I expected and more. I think I liked it more than DS3 tbh lol. Took me about 20 hours lets call it, not counting whatever time ill spend farming today. Good timing too with Overwatch around the corner

Grats on finishing. You finished 10 hours faster than me, but I did get the platinum in like 32-ish hours rushing back through the game a second time.

I hope the lack of activity on the thread isnt indicative of PC people not caring about it but it probably is as for example in the steam thread only like 2 people bought it (including me). Anyway, awesome game, done for now, I would probably play again one day with a new character isntead of NG+, probably a mage.

I started playing this in local coop with a friend (despite initial misgivings about the art), and it's really fun.

One question, where the hell do I get spells from? I now can cast level 4 spells but I still haven't got any more than the single one I started with (mage class).

I think at least part of it is that there has been such a deluge of great and often very time consuming games recently. I wouldn't even have spared it a second look if I didn't need an entirely separate second set of games for regular local coop session in addition to my normal go-to singleplayer/online games.

Finally somebody! Do you need that CoOp item every time? Also do you recommend for someone who isn't really like use to playing games?

I am still trying to trade for it. No bites >.>

They're found both as items in the environment (for example, there's one decent one behind an illusory wall in like the Festering Banquet, if I remember right) and also bought from the npcs who appear if you offer Stone Mages to your sanctuaries.

Note, Stone Mages across different creeds can have different stocks of spells, especially the higher you get your devotion to the creed.

The hidden creeds have the more exotic spells at higher devotion levels.

To increase your creed devotion, you turn in items to the npcs who appear from offering Stone Leaders.

No, you don't need the co-op item every time. You can just go back to the npc that the item summons.

And since there's also an npc that let's you fast travel, it's trivial to always go back to the first one, and then fast travel back to wherever you are in the game.

No, you just place the coop guy in one of your sanctuaries and then you can summon a (separately created) character there for the second player. The co-op is really well implemented actually, e.g. both players can independently use all the menus and talk to NPCs.

I don't think it's a particularly good fit for casual co-op though, the base game is quite complicated and it really shines if you play through the entire thing together.

Edit:
Thanks AmethystEnd for the very informative reply without spoiling too much!
