Salt and Sanctuary |OT| Salt for the Soul

Holy FUCK this game is
AWESOME

I cannot believe I would live to see a Soulsvania game (people throw these bizarre junctions around, figured it was my time).

Correct. Tiny checkpoints you can't do anything with.

Edit: Also, I just realized you're the guy who asked back in March if you could play the game like a heavy tank and then got sad there was no PC release date when we told you yes, you could. Didn't recognize you post avatar change.

Glad you ended up getting the game :D.

On the tanking, im finding it really hard early on actually. Blocking just destroys your stamina and I usually cant do anything else after. Ive dropped down to light armor (rogue set) to use my weapons (which have been greatsword/hammer/axes). Maybe in end game when I have enough stamina and equip load but certainly not yet. Also fat rolling sucks as much as it did in the Souls games, as expected ;_;

Yep. Fat rolling makes it really hard to roll through to the other side of bigger bosses. And yes, building up equip load in this game is a bigger investment than it is in Souls. Stamina's easier, though, so eventually you will be able to block quite a bit. So, to revisit your question from March, it is possible to play tanky, but it'll be awhile :D.

Fair enough. Im loving it tho dont get me wrong, even if im shit at it. Not looking forward to that alchemist boss you guys mention at all.

Btw is it me or weapon dmg upgrades between weapons is much bigger than usual in these games? Almost mmo-like, the greataxe I juat got has twice more dmg than the greatsword I was using, and im still relatively early in the game. I dont even mean that in a bad way just something I noticed.

He was actually really easy once I stopped trying to get fancy with him.

Loving this game, but here's some non-obvious tips if you're like me and don't want to spoil everything with a wiki:

1. Make offerings at shrines when you can! Burning an idol gives you access to buffs and new merchants. A stone guide is especially useful, since it lets you teleport around.

2. Don't be a badass and skip upgrading your default weapons. From what I researched with the daggers it looks like even the starting thief weapon is roughly usable late-game. Related to that, finding level 2+ weapons has been really rare for me. You'll sometimes find new weapons, but it seems the main way to level up your weapon is actually the alchemist with their transmute function.

3. Use the uh, use button (B normally) to open secret doors. It took me a shamefully long time to figure this out.

The heavy strength weapons are just flat out broken in this game, period. I tweeted the devs once to see if this was intentional, but I didn't get a response. The game is still fun with them, of course, but the amount of damage they put out is just obscene compared to dex weapons/lighter strength weapons.

Thats ok, im shit and most enemies will almost 1 shot you so im ok with 1 shoting them back lol.

Im leaving a lot of messages on the ground when I find secrets, hopefully people are using them. There isnt a feedback system which is a shame

I found a Kureimoa greatsword early on and it's practically been my default weapon ever since. It would be one thing if it only had the damage level that it does, but it also has more reach than everything else I've found, so it's both crazy powerful and safe.

Yeah. I forced myself to do dex my first run (since it's what I always do first), but even I used Kureimoa until I found the first katana scythe, which isn't too long after.

Thats the one I just replaced :)

I wonder if I should be upgrading stuff, im always trying to save mats in these games :/

If you like the weapon TYPE, just upgrade. Through alchemy, you can turn any weapon into any other weapon of the same TYPE (greatswords into better greatswords or some other big sword-like things...), and you only lose one upgrade level (so a +5 Kureimoa could be turned into a +4 better greatsword).

Wait what :o Thats weird. What about the boss weapons? I want that giant meat cleaver Jason was using in the quicklook lol

Yeah, if a weapon is something that you can get through transmutation at an alchemist, even if it's a boss soul (item) weapon, it'll be just one upgrade level lower than the previous weapon you're transmuting.

I don't remember if the meat cleaver is something that is found, or if it's acquired through transmutation though.

I can finally put away my Kureimoa. Now that I'm at the Red Hall of Cages where weapons with long recovery times are starting to be a really bad idea, I have it in more of a supporting role for when I really need the reach. I got a Corsair's Backsword (followed by a Tachi), both of which attack faster than the longsword I started with, so I can finally do sword and shield again.

I wonder if you guys realize that Kureimoa = Claymore with a Japanese accent ;)

Yeah that long recovery time and slowness of the big weapons off sets the dmg imo. I mean im sure if you are super good at the game they are OP but people say the same in the souls games and i still die alot lol. And here too :p

Not sure if offended or highly impressed lol :D

Heres something important I forgot to ask. Are there soft/hard caps for stats like in the Souls games? I dont want to waste nodes if there are, so Ill try to take different paths to certain nodes I want if there is a cap.

IIRC strength tapers off at around 35, brutal diminishing returns after that. I think for dex it's 40 or 45.

Well shit...hmm considering the weapon nodes will give 3 4 and 5 eventually, I already fucked up lol

Nah don't worry about it, there's no online so you don't need to worry about overlevelling, plus you can always use grey pearls later to undo some nodes and partially re-spec.

is blocking whats reducing my overall health so much? sometimes I notice that I can only have half my health

edit: oh the alchemist uses the weapons you have to turn them into the boss weapons, I see. That makes more sense. Are these amber idols rare, I only have one so need to choose between the axe or mace for now :(

oh shit they become class 2, I better not do it yet as I can only 1 hand class 1 greatweapons so far, dodged a bullet there

edit: well now I can, got enough salt from the
kraekan dragon
to get the rank 3 greathammer/greataxe :)

edit: hmm it seems you should upgrade your weapons BEFORE you transmute them with the boss souls, because the mats to upgrade them are easier to get the the transmuted one only loses 1 level? I made the meat cleaver axe and its great, but then I upgraded a greathammer I have to +4 and it does alot more dmg, meanwhile I cant even upgrade my meat cleaver to +1 because I dont have the mat :(

hmm kinda lost in Hager's cavern, not sure where to go, seems I explored everything. Also, did I miss that Mad Alchemist boss you guys mentioned? Since last time I killed the
kraekan dragon
and
tree of men
, and like I said im now in hager cavern, seems I missed something?

level wise im now 50, I took a break from lvling str and the greathammer/axe skills to focus a bit on armor. I made my way to heavy armor rank 4, and I can now get rank 5 if/when I want. even at 75 equip load or whatever I have I can still barely use heavy armor and the big weapons (im not even talking about avoiding fat rolling, im talking about avoiding going over the limit), im not even using tower shields (seems you cant parry with them like the souls games, and I actually use parry alot in this one). I equipped the full Titan set for example and would need 120 equip load, not counting weapons O_o

is there any sort of equip load ring like the souls games?

on the weapon front, im using a +4 Warhammer, I can transmute it to a rank 2 or rank 3 one, the rank 2 would actually be weaker, but not the rank 3 one, but I dont have rank 4 to be able to 1 hand it anyway so im just using my normal upgraded weapon for now. I regret transmuting my axe because now its stuck at level 0 and I have no axe to transmute to another boss soul (I didnt know you would get multiple choices later), unless you can still use THAT one to further transmute it when I get another apropriate soul?

edit: double post because nobody is playing the game apparently :(

The closest I've found is an Endurance +3 ring. Not quite the same level as the ridiculous +50% from the Havel's Ring in Dark Souls, but it's kept me under 75% burden a lot.

How do I reach the Red Hall of Cages? Got the
Wall Jump and Gravity Brands

I wish I could tell you. With the amount of shortcuts connecting everything it's hard to remember how I found an area the first time.

You did miss that boss, but it's optional. At level 50, you'd destroy him in 10-15 seconds, but if you do want to fight him, he's high up in the woods before Sunken Keep. Gotta platform up to him.

And yeah, you can keep transmuting the same weapon over and over. You could even turn a maxed out boss weapon into a shitty early game weapon if you wanted to for some reason.

It's
underneath the Castle of Storms. Go to the far right of that area, you'll find a giant shield knight on the bridge, and beyond it is a doorway you have to open which will let you get down to the Red Hall of Cages. You'll need the Wall Jump to open the door
.

Got this on PC two days ago. Only played for an hour, and much of that was deciding which class to use.

Ended up with a Paladin because I just wasn't doing well with the Hunter. I've beat my first boss already and got enough levels to do lvl1 prayers. Now I'm just gonna try and get my encumbrance up enough so I can stop fat rolling.

This game is really good so far. All I really wish for is either a way to look down from where you're standing or less fall damage. I haven't died yet from falling off a ledge but I know it's gonna happen eventually.

You can pan the camera a bit with the right joystick.

Didn't realize that. Thanks for the info. That'll certainly help with those drops of faith.

Rule of thumb: If you can't see a platform even after panning the camera down, you're probably jumping to your death. However there are some locations (2 or 3 off the top of my head) where it's safe to drop even if you can't see a platform, but there are environmental clues that there's a platform to drop onto at a specific spot somewhere below.

I think I'm going to break. I can't wait a year on another outsourced Vita game.

I'll probably just double dip when it does come out on Vita.

PS4, it is!

Yup.

And those particular locations are secret areas optional anyway.

It's an effect called wounding. The more damage you take, the more your total health drops (refills at a sanctuary or with a prayer). A ring mitigates that somewhat, the ring of bandages.

I just beat Dark Souls 3 and I gotta pick between this and Uncharted 4 to start next. How long is this game? Dark Souls 3 took me a little longer than I think it should have (40 hours... but hit all bosses and tried my best to do everything in the first run that I could, some backtracking).

When this game came out in March, people were reporting times ranging from 11 hours to 30 hours. If you did Dark Souls 3 in 40 hours, this'll probably be around 11-15 hours for you.

It took me about 33 hours to beat Salt & Sanctuary my first time through, hitting every area, and hitting every boss. I'd say a good 3 hours of that though was "baby inflation" (left the game on to tend to my daughter). So it's about 25-30 hours methinks.

How Long to Beat has Main + Extras pegged at a 25H median.

Sounds about right.

I really took my time, and I think it was about 25 hours for a single playthrough.

My Dark Souls 3 experience was definitely stretched out by this as well, quite a few times were I had to check on him while he was sleeping and left the game on.

Might get some time to boot this up tonight, thanks.

damn it, I need to find him for completion sake, and for the boss soul. also looking at this location guide in the wiki, and assuming its in progression order, I seem to have missed 1 or 2 zones. One called Mal's Floating Castle (I assume you would get to it through castle of storms?) and one called Cran's Pass?

edit: nope nvm, you need a power I dont have yet for that floating castle area. And same for Cran's Pass, welp! And they are both tagged as optiona. too, in fact I would never find my way into Cran's Pass from the description (hey its a Souls game alright if I have tor ead how to get into optional areas lol)

OK, I'm having a really hard time deciding which class the stick with. I thought I wanted a paladin, but I haven't found any good hammers or heavy armor, plus I hate fat rolling. The knight looks like he's the exact same as the paladin, so he's a no-go as well. I tried the hunter, but the whip moveset really sucks imo.

What's the point of either the chef or the pauper? I know with the deprived in Dark Souls he starts at a lower level so you can really customize him, but I can't see the stats that these two start with. Where do they start on the level up tree? Does anyone start near the spots where you can put points into using spears? I got a lvl0 one and I really like it, but everyone I've seen so far starts way far off from the lvl1 spear node that it doesn't make sense to spend that much salt going over to it.
