Salt & Sanctuary (Ska studios, 2d Souls-like) releasing on PS4 March 15

holy fuck out of fucking nowhere, I've been waiting for this for so long.

Also glad you didn't get your thread shat on by people saying 'This isn't souls-like' and arguing very silly semantics.

Will buy day one. I've loved every game of theirs I've played, including I made a game with zombies in it

Got too many games to play as it is, so I'll probably wait for the Vita version.
No physical release, I take it?

Pre-ordered this on PSN last night with a couple of other games (Stories and Invisible Inc). Been eagerly awaiting this game since I heard about it. Next week? I need to finish AC Syndicate quick XD

How long ago was this game announced, 2 or 3 years ago? It's been along time coming and it's almost here. DAY FUCKING 1.

Great timing for me, I'm wrapping up Momodora. I also loved the Dishwasher series and am eagerly awaiting the PC releases.
iirc they said they will finish the Vampire smile PC port in the meantime when Salt and Sacntuary is in certification ... who knows..
as for the exclusivity time .. in case of Axiom verge it was like a month , in case of Galak-Z it was almost 3 months...

Aaand preordered. I don't think there are any other (at least not off the top of my head) games that I want between now and DS3, so this should tide me over nicely.

Finally up for preorder on the UK store. In for day 1!

The art style and combat look amazing, can't wait to get my hands on this. It takes more than a few heavy handed inspirations from Souls though, I'm quite surprised they got away with it!

FYI for you European types - We get the same 10% preorder discount as the US. £13.50.

Or the Galak-Z Vita version (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/03/07/galak-z-coming-to-ps-vita/)?

I'd love to see it, but I'll believe it's coming when I'm actually downloading it to the Vita.
Those two examples are not comparable. Since Axiom is still coming to vita and galakz got cancelled.

The thing with Axiom is that it's taking a loooooong time.

Got my review copy, started downloading! Much excite!
Can u at least tell us when the review embargo is up?? Please??

Closing in on the 3 hour mark. Game is pretty great so far. Some pro's.

  • Man their is a lot of content so far. I've found 11 unique weapons in my 3 hours of time. SKA have told me there are over 600 pieces of weapons, armors, and spells.
  • Each weapon has a unique moveset of 5-10 moves. You can also 2 hand which is a whole new set of moves.
  • Weapons feel great especially the heavy weapon's feel immensely satisfying. Crashing down, and impaling a zombie feels amazing. Bodies, body parts, and blood will fly, and it all feels really good.
  • The game so far is good at making you feel fairly weak at the start, but making you feel stronger, and stronger over time. Quite a bit of backtracking
  • You can parry bosses
  • Game world is really big so far. Lots of full out areas to go, and explore. If you're having trouble with an area there is always another one you can visit.
  • For a 2D side scroller it feels surprisingly overwhelming. World feels large, and quite interconnected.
  • Lots of similarities to the Dark Souls series to even little things like weapon scaling, Covenants and weight effecting movement. Surprising similarities to DeS in non gameplay elements such as NPC's, to a locations name and look.
  • it's all about timing with the combat. It's nowhere near as fast as their Dishwasher games, it's got slower pace. Stamina runs out fast, attacks are much slower. Its much more of a focus on defense/rolling. You'll also get punished hard if you try the classic run to the boss.
A few cons

  • First 2 bosses felt pretty weak to me. They felt hard for the sake of being hard. Especially after the half way point they can land pretty cheap blows. First boss has some weird hit boxes with it's attacks. I didn't enjoy fighting them.
  • Soundtrack is sadly for the most part very weak so far. First 2 boss themes repeat the same theme too.
  • Upgrade tree is a bit of a pain to navigate. It feels way too large, unorganized. Causes a bit of confusion.

This is a first impression. Game's quality is improving significantly over time. I'm excited to see how crazy this gets towards the end. I've been told by SKA the game has
20
bosses, so I've got a ways to go.

YES...Day 1 for me.

ALL ABOARD

Great read, thanks for posting!

I am pretty mad hyped for this, I am a big fan of Skas other works (especially Vampire Smile) so it with the Dark Souls angle is just like the two perfect combo of traits for me. I think it is gonna have to be a vita or PC play through for me ( whichever comes out first.)

Love Ska Studios. The Dishwasher and I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MBIES 1N IT!!!1 were some of my favorite indie games last-gen.

Looking forward to this one.
