Salt & Sanctuary (Ska studios, 2d Souls-like) releasing on PS4 March 15

Runs beautifully. Hasn't dipped even once for me. I know what you mean though I was playing Galak-Z, and that runs terribly when it really shouldn't.

Ah, so its not a true souls experience then.

sorry I had too.

Will play through once then partake in jolly cooperation with a friend while drunk. Wish me many deaths!

How is the co-op? Easy to play with a friend?

Co-Op and PVP both look ridiculously fun.

I pretty much always go melee in Souls games and most ARPGS, but magic seems pretty awesome in this. Kinda leaning towards a Fire Witch. Can't wait to hear more impressions, wish this was out nooow.
Oh so there is coop? Nice. I thought I saw a second player in a brief clip at some point but I couldn't remember if it looked like an NPC helper or another player.

Any local coop?

Finished my first playthrough last night. Loved it. Already a few hours in on a second character.

I'm not sure my exact playtime as I think the counter continued while the PS4 was in rest mode, but I'm pretty sure it was around 15-ish hours. I think that's probably a bit faster just due to my prior experience with Dark Souls/Bloodborne. As someone mentioned above this has a lot of replayability between character classes and the sheer number of weapons/shields/armor/etc.

For me this is the closest anyone has come to recreating the feelings I get while playing Souls-games. Just the tense nature of not knowing what's ahead and whether or not you should go back to a prior Sanctuary or risk losing all of your Salt. And like in Dark Souls it feels pretty darn good to take down a boss. That said I think the bosses are easier in this game. Ended up taking most of them down on my first try.

I'm curious how people will react to just how similar this is to Souls games. Almost every gameplay mechanic in this is lifted straight from those games. (There's a couple exceptions where things are slightly changed.) I don't really mind it because I love Dark Souls so much and 'the more the merrier', but there were some points where it just felt too close...

Anyways, the game controls super well, great transition of Souls gameplay into 2D, fun surprises later on, believe the hype, etc.

Any more impressions?

I will write my impressions later but for now: I have Far Cry Primal, Hitman and Division sitting on my PS4' s HDD and i am playing this. I am a huge fan of Hitman and I even haven't even checked it for five minutes (which unlocked an hour ago or so for me) because i cannot stop playing this.

It is awesome that we will be playing 2 Souls game this year. Okay, i was just gonna tell how awesome it is and go back to playing it but a few notes:

+Combat feels awesome. It is weighty, slow and tactical.
+ Art Design is superb. Reminds me of both Souls series and the Darkest Dungeon.
+ Performance is awesome so far.
+ World feels huge. I didn't expect this. Seriously.

The Point is, it is awesome. It is just pure awesomeness. If FROM, mighty Miyazaki were to make a 2D souls game, it would have been this.

I hope there's a grim reaper armor set!

Man, you guys know how to hype a game. From not being interested at all, I'm super stoked now to get this next week.

Every game that is similar to the Souls games is a good game. I can't wait to read more impressions here.

I'm currently watching A German Spy's playthrough of the Alpha Build, does anyone know how much of the mechanics still hold true for the final build?

Further Impressions. This game is all over the place at this point. Some highs, and low low's sadly. Lots of big, and small problems that really build up.Things getting stale, and game is dragging quite a bit. Hopefully it gets better. Their are those occasional impressive moments. It's ripping off DS series so hard in so many ways other than gameplay. It's a bit shameless. It was acceptable at the start, but it's gotten ridiculous. Art direction is getting unoriginal, and inconsistent. I'll save my much more in depth thoughts until the end

It's getting more Metroidvania which I dig.

This game does have a lot of content. Very impressive how much SKA have created.

Keep your hype levels in check.

Nooo, don't say that!

The game looks neat from what I saw AGermanSpy play of it.

I'll probably wait for a PC version, though.

the art style is definitely an acquired taste, fortunately I'm not playing it for that. As to the complaints of how close it is to Souls, I've been expecting it haha.

But if they can't nail the core Souls concept of balanced difficulty, everything else falls apart. Souls games can be as challenging as they are because the core gameplay mechanics are basically flawless. If S&S tries to emulate that challenge with inferior gameplay (poor hitboxes, unfair encounters, bugs/glitches, etc), then it will likely be received poorly.

What's extra worrying is how ASilentProtagonist's impressions took a nosedive from his earlier post, especially after the earlier mention of bad hitboxes leading to aggravating boss fights. All of the preview coverage only goes through the first few hours of the game, which means that other previewers with positive impressions (AGermanSpy, Lobos Jr, etc) might all experience the same drop-off when playing the final version.

The only one here who has finished the game is Penguin nerd, and I guess I'm curious if he felt like anything was getting grating in the mid/late game.

Really looking forward to this, so great it's coming out soon. Shame the pc version doesn't have a date though as I'd really like to play that version.
Do we know if any features of the game require PS Plus?

Axiom Verge hit the PC six weeks after the PS4 release. I assume S&S, also a self-published indie game, has a similar if not identical schedule.

According to somebody on their facebook Ska Studios have said something about 3 months.
Can't find a quote though so could be false.

If it's actually 3 months I guess I'll go for PS4, just hope I'm not missing nice features by not having plus.

I just have a few questions. I'd appreciate the input of anyone that's played the game.

1. Is the skill tree too overwhelming? I've only seen a little bit of it, and the skill tree looks massive. Is it easy to get lost and start putting points into useless things? Do you get enough points to get new skills/upgrades regularly so you feel like your character is progressing?

2. What are the online features? Is PS+ necessary to get the most out of the game?

I was about to bring up this thread again.

  1. All the videos from streamers of the game chose to go for melee builds, is there any where that goes indepth about the magic system and how it works?
  2. Also, any details about the Creeds (Covenants) ?

2. What are the online features? Is PS+ necessary for the game?

Zero. You have passive things like messages and dead bodies, but there's no online co-op (yet).

Sold. Day one.

I completely missed that this game was coming out next week. That's awesome! It's been one of my most anticipated titles since its announcement. I'm hoping the Vita version isn't too far behind the PS4 version.

I got to meet James and Melissa at E3 last year, and play the PS4 version of Salt and Sanctuary, and it was awesome. They were also awesome, and incredibly friendly and personable. We had a great time chatting about the game, and they let me play the demo for a long time until I finally beat the boss, and we were all whooping and cheering when I finally did it. Very nice couple, and they have my money for sure. Really looking forward to sinking my teeth into it.

The game felt very good to play, but that was last June. I'm sure it's been polished even moreso. Perfect game for the Vita.
