Salt & Sanctuary (Ska studios, 2d Souls-like) releasing on PS4 March 15

Let's be real here. Dark Souls/Bloodborne doesn't have incredible combat that keeps evolving as you play. It's block, parry, strike, roll. Over and over again. Combat changes because of the different weapons and this game looks like you have a lot of variety.
What logic is this? Oh, fire.

I, uh... kinda went out and finally bought a PS4 to play this sooner. >.>
Even after reading this thread, I'm looking forward to trying this out.
Hopefully it'll be just like Charlie Murder, where people think it's fine while I love the hell out of it. lol

Its really funny that someone would preorder a game, then read one bad opinion and cancel the preorder.I guess if the majority of the reviews are good then that someone would buy the game day 1 lol!

Not sure if this is aimed at me, but I generally do not preorder games, especially not digital releases (that you can't resell!), unless there is a compelling reason to do so. $1.80 is not a good reason to buy the cat in the bag. Furthermore, I didn't cancel my preorder (since that's not possible on PSN); I simply decided to wait until there is more information, which is sensible.

Preorder culture is bad for us. Combined with a near total lack of demos it has brought us tons of broken/unfinished games this generation.
No reason to laugh at those who take a cautious approach.

If you were already waiting that's fine, he's talking about people who pre-ordered then read one negative impression and immediately started freaking out that the game shit and scrambling to cancel their pre-order. There's nothing silly on taking a cautious approach and waiting for more reviews before pre-ordering though. In this case I love preloading. Main reason I pre-order digital games is for that.

And to the person wondering where reviews are, remember that this is a relatively obscure indie game. I doubt many sites had a person reviewing this. You might have to wait until more impressions are out.

Yeah, I know, but Sony is funding the game so it'll be three months or more before I get to take a stab at it. I'm not upset they took Sony's money–I absolutely would have done the same thing in their shoes. It just means I'm unlikely to give it a go personally for now.
For all i know that exclusivity can be somewhere between a month(axiom verge) and 3 months(galak-z).
This might even be specual case as they said, that they will Vampire Smile PC port inbetween PS4 and PC releade of SaS

I watched bits and pieces of a few let's play type of things this weekend and went ahead and pre-ordered. It will (hopefully) hold me over until April 12th.

I can't believe the amount of dissuasion ONE opinion can have. Players on Reddit and other forums don't have one bad thing to say about the game. Jesus, think for yourself.

I have a friend like this. He will find whatever site gave a game it's lowest score and say "oh I heard gamesite69.com said it's terrible so I'm not getting it" The game could score phenomenally everywhere else though.

Can't decide to buy or not to buy.
Same here. I'm so much of a Souls fanboy that I can't enjoy imitators. Lords of the Fallen did nothing for me. Combined with the fact that I couldn't even care to spend more than 3 hours on Shovel Knight.

I'll probably get S&S on sale later. Sorry, Ska Studios.

I don't understand how Shovel Knight has any relevance to this?

It is good to have contrasting opinions though zoning on the worst IS dumb.

Could be spun though: the worst opinion still said it was good for 3-5 hours, and for a cheap indie even lasting that long it's great!

LOL if you couldn't enjoy Shovel Knight because of its minor Souls influence, don't ever play this game. Ever.

It uses a death mechanic very similar to Souls (lose money when you die but can pick it up when you arrive back at that point).

What a ridiculous reason to stop playing that game.

An intimate, exciting and discovery-fueled experience, rich in content and secrets, will have players exploring and lorecrafting for months to come. The pricepoint sweetens the deal for any souls, rpg or castlevania fan looking for a new and satisfying experience. - 9

While it hits many of the marks on the Soulsevania checklist, Salt and Sanctuary seems hellbent on being an homage to those series, rather than forging its own path. If you are a fan of the genre, you will enjoy its misty ruins and dark atmosphere but it's not an adventure that will stay with you for long. - 7

After reading a few posts here, the game really piqued my interest, so I went and looked up some gameplay vids. Man...is it just me, or is it pretty hard to see what's going on sometimes? Like, trying to read enemy actions on some of those backgrounds doesn't work all that well with the art style. For reference, here's the vid I watched...

Incredible, this just cemented my pre-order. Thanks :)

Awesome I had no doubts anyway, can't wait for midnight!

It's difficult to be disappointed by a great studio taking solid mechanics and narrative beats from one of the best studios around, especially when the result is something as well-crafted as Salt and Sanctuary. While I do wish Ska Studio's latest had more of its own identity, I can't deny that I enjoyed every minute of it. I already spent about 25 hours with it, and I'm salivating, eager to go through New Game +. Now be proud that I didn't make a "salty" joke like every other outlet will in their review.

So the only knock on it ( if it can be considered one ) is that it pays too much homage? That's a good problem to have.

I find that weird because when I watched German Spy walk through of the alpha there were definitely a lot of original ideas and mechanics not related directly to souls. Mostly to do with the Sanctuary stuff and unlocking abilities

Skill tree is very unique and huge, I remember watching a stream and the devs were saying it was originally bigger and they had to trim it down.

I think once Sony got involved, the PC version got shelved. They haven't mentioned it in quite some time ;(

No, they've talked about it, it's just a vague "after" date. They likely aren't allowed to say anything specific.

It's a few spots below in the tweet I linked in the OP.

Eh, the play through I watched showed me a bunch of tells from enemies and bosses. Granted, it doesn't give you much time to react, but after watching one couple lose over and over at the same boss (God that was frustrating), the tells were certainly there.

I've pre ordered this after watching a few streams last night, it looks like fun and it's not expensive and it'll keep me going until DS3 drops.

After seeing a live stream of this game I went ahead and preordered it. The game is right up my alley and I can't wait for midnight to play it, I just know I'm going to try and get every damn skill in that skill tree.
