Salt & Sanctuary (Ska studios, 2d Souls-like) releasing on PS4 March 15

[*]The bosses are absolutely terrible. If their not insanely easy their very cheap

[*]The game just feels hard for the sake of being hard

[*]Cheap Deaths with even some traps later that instantly kill you with noway to avoid them

[*]The checkpoint system gets baaaaad

These are the most worrying points. Aesthetic concerns are one thing, but broken difficulty is the kiss of death for any game trying to emulate Souls. And nothing is worse than getting stressed out over an indie that you took a chance on.

If these impressions are echoed by other reviewers tomorrow, I forsee this falling flat. It'd be a shame too, because the devs seem like truly cool and ambitious people.

I pre ordered it on faith, interest in the idea, and because I genuinely like the creators and want to support them. 16 bucks I can spend on a really big dinner on a weekend so it isn't the end of the world for me.

This is probably the closest the Vita is gonna grt to a souls game. Im all in just to have this on the go, gonna bring my Vita back to life.

I'm always both worried and excited when I see a "Souls-like" description. That's an incredibly difficult thing to get right, and when you get it wrong, you get it wrong.

I'll be waiting for user impressions on this one.

Thank God internet opinion doesn't sway me.

It looked interested enough to buy before and it does now. And it's not broken to hell and back.

Haven't played any of their games. The Souls influence was what got me hyped. But man these complaints are rough. I don't mind ripping off DS. I mean it's why I preordered. But repetitive combat? Incoherent world? Bad bosses?

I dunno. I have no choice at this point.

Let's be real here. Dark Souls/Bloodborne doesn't have incredible combat that keeps evolving as you play. It's block, parry, strike, roll. Over and over again. Combat changes because of the different weapons and this game looks like you have a lot of variety.

I have this pre-ordered because I want to support Ska Studios but I don't really play anything on the PlayStation anymore. Hopefully one of the streamers or YouTubers I follow pick it up.

If you play on PC then it's also on PC. If you just don't play games period, I'm sure someone will make a walkthrough.

Yeah, I know, but Sony is funding the game so it'll be three months or more before I get to take a stab at it. I'm not upset they took Sony's money–I absolutely would have done the same thing in their shoes. It just means I'm unlikely to give it a go personally for now.

I watched a pretty meaty stream of it yesterday and it's hard to say if I'll like this. I did preorder it and I'm hoping for a good time but watching bad players play it is irksome and on top of that the boss battle I watched over and over again showed me how fucking cheap they can be.

I just hope the levying system is robust as it looks to be.

I was keen for this but the boss battles I've seen so far honestly just look cheap - they lack what I want from bosses in a Souls-like game. Might have to hold out on this for now.

Your move set is always the same, but the way you tackle enemies is ever changing. It is one of the reasons why the combat is so brilliant in those games: enemy design (AI, movement, attacks) and enemy placement.
Saying it is just block, parry, strike, roll is very reductionist.

I bought this game on the hopes they will re-release ZP2KX: Zombies and Pterodactyls on PS4. It was one of my favorite 360 games of all time. Pleeeease!

Axiom Verge was released on PC a little over a month after the PS4 version.

The only problem is, on that timeline Dark Souls III will be sucking all the air out of the room.

I'm not normally a fan of this recent art trend but this one actually looks really cool. If it's souls like I assume it's going to be really hard?

|OT| Salty Tears, everywhere.

I am playing it, but I am still in the beginning.

Overall, it feels more like a 2D Metroidvania game than a 2D Souls game. From what I had of the combat so far, it doesn't have the depth to be compared to the Souls games. It's simplicity is something I would expect more from a 2D Castlevania title around the PS1/GBA era..
Souls games have deep combat? Since when?

Ska is capable of making something far better than 2d souls, combat-wise. Hope it lives up to The Dishwasher games.

I'm sorry for not knowing every indie game ever made :)

ill let it slide this time.. :P

on a side note... its been 7 years since the first Dishwasher: Dead Samurai game... XD

also check out Charlie Murder from the same dev... a pretty good Beat em Up on 360

Charlie Murder is really good. I'm not even much of a beat em up guy and I really loved it.

Also, man, the dishwasher games need to come to PC some time. Those games are so good and it is a shame that they're only on 360.

Can't wait! Gave it pre-ordered already :D! Loved the dishwasher games and I like souls games a lot so I'm really looking forward to this

Beat it last night. I really wanted to love this game. Here' some of my many complaints.

  • The game is impressively long for an indie, but it feels far too long
  • Incoherent world design
  • Repetitive combat
  • Most enemies can be beaten by mashing fast attack with maybe a roll
  • The bosses are absolutely terrible. If their not insanely easy their very cheap
  • The game just feels hard for the sake of being hard
  • Cheap Deaths with even some traps later that instantly kill you with noway to avoid them
  • The checkpoint system gets baaaaad
  • Inconsistent messy art

Game started out pretty well for the first 3-5 hours. It's shame that the quality in many places takes such a dip

It just feels unoriginal. Dark Souls series fanatics will cringe at how much it takes. Even the NPC's can be exact copies of the DS one in looks, and character. It also doesn't help that the story feels like they tried really hard to make it a philosophical dark game. It tries to even tell the Story in DS fashion with item descriptions, NPC's etc, but the Lore is very boring, uninteresting, incoherent.

If you're really wanting that DS fix a little early with Dark Souls 3 just a mere month away I say just wait
. Their is enough content here to justify the 18$ price tag, but the problem is that the content is poor.

I hate being the bearer of bad news, but i want to save some Gaffers money, and the pain of disappointment.

How's the optional content? is there replayability? new game+?

Thank you for your impressions, decided not to pre-order.

PS.
No offense, but you are not a writer, are you? "Their" is not the same as "there" and "they're".

Thanks for the info, I'll avoid buying this for now.

Only thing missing from making it a spot on clone of Dark Souls would be a bad camera/lock on system.

People should definitely wait for more reviews before freaking out. Souls games and "Souls-like" titles speak to different people in different ways, so you really can't gauge this game's quality based on one guy's impressions.

I mean, one of the complaints is how much it steals from Souls but this has been known since the game was announced. It's a shameless 2D Dark Souls clone on purpose. This should not come as a shock.

Not trying to discredit his opinion though, as it's obviously valid.

I can't believe the amount of dissuasion ONE opinion can have. Players on Reddit and other forums don't have one bad thing to say about the game. Jesus, think for yourself.

Well articulated negative opinions carries a lot more weight than positive opinions for me. Especially in this case where the person started out pretty positive and it's only a question of pre-purchasing or not. Of course I (and most of the others I've seen in this thread) don't write off the game completely based on one opinion. As most have said it's a situation where we don't pre-purchase and instead wait for more opinions (not first impressions) and reviews to see if the cons listed are something that others echo.

There is no review embargo, yet there are no reviews up. Why is that?

If preordering awarded a large discount, say 30-50% then that would have been enough incentive to preorder despite ASilentProtagonist's (well articulated) negative impressions. But we are talking about $1.80 here.
If general consensus turns out to be positive, then I have no problem spending $18 after launch.

That's like saying Mario doesn't have incredible platforming because all you do is run and jump all over again. It's the way mechanics are tied to tremendous encounter design that makes Soulsborne combat so good. Getting that right isn't a case of just copying mechanics.

Its really funny that someone would preorder a game, then read one bad opinion and cancel the preorder.I guess if the majority of the reviews are good then that someone would buy the game day 1 lol!

Apparently, they were going to port them while Salt was in certification stage on ps4.
