Saros | Review Thread

worse story than returnal and 0 improvements to roguelike elements is a big disappointment :/

Hopefully the game is not like death stranding 2 in terms of difficulty to appeal to mainstream

PS5 version seems pretty good this time with good resolution and clarity.

Pro doesn't bring a lot more compared to Returnal where the Pro version looked so much better.
huh? Just looking at those pictures, the pro version is a lot cleaner without those nasty ass upscaling artifacts, particles especially looks sharp af, while the base ps5 version is an artifacting mess as expected from the early footage

I'm calling it now... the lack of challenge in this game is going to disappoint a lot of Returnal fans. It's unfortunate.

They are using PS5 custom I/O with instant loadings when accessing biomes.

Of course. But Returnal on PS5 was visually very poor and blurry. Here the game has actually a higher native resolution (1220p or so) on PS5 than Returnal static 1080p. It's worse than PS5 Pro (which has super sharp PSSR2 this time at native 1440p), but I'd say visually the gap is smaller than Returnal PS5 / Pro sharpness gap. Returnal was really horrific on PS5 with 2 upscalings (1080p -> 1440p -> 2160p):

Well, both say 86 reviews in the OP. Anyways, HouseMarque will get to live, 88 is still great for this kinda game.
If you click on the OpenCritic link in my OP, there are around 40 reviews up right now. It'll take some time for more reviews to be added and for the score to settle. Metacritic is much faster at adding scores and reviews, but they don't have an easy export feature for forums like GAF the same way OpenCritic does.

Yea, I see now, I misread the OP, I thought the 86 text was referring to Opencritic, then 86 reviews again for MC. Makes sense.

So is this HouseMarque's highest reviewed game?

Cmon people play it and tell me if its roguelike system is better than returnal, I lost interest in returnal pretty fast after beating the last biome and finishing the story ... so definitely not worth full launch price.

Seems like they made 0 progress regarding that :( That was one of my biggest problems with returnal. Other than the excellent gameplay, there is no reason to play it after you finish the story here, just like returnal

I thought the whole point of these games is just play again in randomized levels if you enjoy the core loop

I'll pick it up.

Returnal was a frustrating experience, more around expectations versus reality. It was an arcade game, not a rogue like. There was no meaningful difference between runs or substantive build variety.

Sounds like Saros improves on this point. I'm sure it's being slightly overrated. Everything is these days.

But I love Housemarque so will support them.

Why is opencritic higher than the Metacritic? Usually there's no more than 1 point difference between them.
Metacritic weights it's reviews. An IGN review is worth more than a Noisy pixel review. So if IGN gives a lower score than the rest of outlets, metacritic will drift from Opencritic

What's up with these no name sites giving it a 9 but legit sites like IGN and others are in the7 to 8 range

Is the game actually difficult this time around?

Great reviews, Returnal was excellent so I had no doubt this would be good.

Fuck .. you're right... they just cant help thenselfs even in this kind of games. How about some simple hero story, it would be really nice.

Really good reviews. Happy for the devs.

I would have probably gone for the early access in normal circumstances but I already have a shit ton of games to get through. I've had to put Pragmata on the back-burner and that would normally have been a day 1. Really strong start to 2026 for games.

I need to complete Starfield as well as my 3rd play-through of Cyberpunk. I'm also half way through Crimson Desert. Not to mention the FS VR beta that I'm enjoying a lot.

And the sun has put his hat on in the UK.
