Saudi man divorces wife after seeing her face on wedding day

We’ve all heard of “love at first sight,” but how about the opposite?

Over the weekend, a man in the western Saudi Arabian town of Medinah decided to divorce his new bride minutes after their wedding ceremony when he lifted her veil and saw her face for the first time for wedding photos. You know, because people who have never seen each other’s faces should totally take the step of getting married, this could never backfire. Oh, wait…

The groom reportedly rose in anger after first seeing his bride and shouted: “You are not the girl I want to marry. You are not the one I imagined. I am sorry, but I divorce you.”

At least he’s sorry.

While wedding guests tried to step in to resolve the situation to no avail, the bride reportedly collapsed in a fit of tears upon his exclamation—I’m guessing this wasn’t exactly what SHE imagined either.

Another win for sexually repressed societies.

This reminded me of a documentary about victorian England I saw a while back. It told a story about some guy who after getting married couldn't consummate the marriage because of the pubic hair of his wife. His only reference to female nudity was greek art and he was expecting her to be completely hairless. He was completely appalled and almost traumatized.

I'll be awaiting her post in the Ugly GAF thread. I can hear it now.

You won't believe what happened to me this weekend...

Looks like Mama June under the veil.

Poor girl. The dude didn't need to be unkind about it[or perhaps he did?] but I feel like that system is rigged to oppress people, especially women.

I think in Indian cultures you at least get to spend time with one another and decide if you do want to marry the person. This is just bogus.

Probably could have shown a bit of tact and at least waited until they weren't in front of the wedding party. I suppose that's probably asking too much.

Yeah, this is terrible for the wife, but you can't really blame the guy either, unless he's supporting the whole "don't look until your married" system. It's not like staying married without any physical attraction would be much fun for either of them anyway.

I don't understand this. Can someone explain?
Same girl? They don't look the same except for eyes.

The child was anonymous for quite some years. Made the Time cover and all. Photog went back to look for her. She's married with children.

Edit. Veil lifted

Better than marrying and living a farce with someone you don't like being with, not like it matters much in a culture where you are marrying a woman whose face is unknowkn to you, but still.

Just ask terrisus, I heard he is an expert.
