Saudi man divorces wife after seeing her face on wedding day

That's cruel. How could he not have taken it under consideration that she may not look like what he imagined. You think this would be a regular occurrence.

So is she screwed in her life now that she's divorced? Will it be harder for her to find a husband now? Is she like a second class citizen since she's been divorced? I confess I'm pretty ignorant to this part of Saudi life.

It was pretty regular during this era, well...to my circle of friends at least;

Still...what an asshole to laid out in front of her like that.

Yup, she's likely going to be a second wife to a middle aged man, or marry an old widower.

LOL

How does the guy know what a woman is supposed to look like, don't all women (evil tourists aside) there wear burkas?

Probably because of the discrepancies between how his mom or sister described her looks to him, and the how she actually looked like.

...and that, kids, was the first time I sucked a dick for crack
Image on left is so iconic, amazing what a few years will do. Lighting in the second one isn't doing her any favors though.

Nearly 30 years isn't a "few". Why are people so shocked by this?

It's called aging, which doesn't help her case being worse than others considering the stress she's endured all her life.

Thread is a graveyard.

Btw, everyone including childish racists and misogynists and a couple of just ill-thought-out jokesters, should read the Afghan girl's story, in Nat Geos follow-up a few years ago and you'll have more empathy for her expression.

And she is precisely as hauntingly beautiful "old" as she was young.

I think her expression in both shots represent the quintessential, "I've seen some shit" glare. One can only imagine. Much sadness in those eyes.

well, at least he has been honest

If you were perm-banned for this then wow. (It's pretty tame compared to what's been in previous threads that are far more offensive).

I'd imagine that normal people would at least have a picture of the face or something of the person you're about to marry.

For the would-be wife, at least she wasn't stuck in a relationship with this Saudi guy. If he got this mad over her face, then I don't wish to imagine what he'd do if they were together...

I remember seeing the left pic of the girl as a kid. It was pretty famous even then. It's got to be at least 25-30 years old so yeah it makes sense that she looks like an older woman now.

This updated picture was taken in 2002, when she was between 28-30 years old (she herself doesn't know exactly how old she is). She looks beautiful to me. Sounds like she's very stoic, as the author says she refuses to smile for anyone but her husband, as culture demands. Sounds like it works, seeing the number of people who feel sorry for her just by the way she looks.

I thought you could at least see the face or some parts of the face of your prospective partner in most muslim countries ?

If you can't even see that then on what basis do you chose someone ? The quality of their burka ?

What an asshole, it took him only a few minutes to ruin someone's life.

I'm all for every Saudi woman bringing a gun on their wedding day, just to make sure there are no surprises from immature assholes.

Yeah, "shouldn't" should be "should".

Wat. He's an asshole, but he doesn't deserve to die.

The gun part is just to make sure they are in it for the long term :p

I actually saw something similar at a Turkish wedding many years ago, it was the brides dad and brother who were threatening to kill the guy because he refused to marry the lady after going to bed with her. Best wedding ever, it was hilarious.

It happens in Saudi arabia, but there is a significant portion of families whom are super conservative. No meeting between bride & groom until the wedding day, which is just a formality really, the marriage vows already happened several months ago between the groom and the bride's father/guardian.

That's a 13 year old!? Fuck my life...
No, she was 16/17 in the picture on the left, and in her late 20's/early 30's on the right, IIRC. She was 13 when she got married, though.

I don't see the issue myself, she's still a beautiful woman. Her features are less soft, but that would happen to anybody.

A woman has the same right to reject a man as he has before marriage in Islamic marriages. She has complete agency in getting married. An Islamic judge who oversees weddings would not allow any marriage where either sides were not satisfied. In this case, the husband found out AFTER the marriage that she didn't have the face he was expecting. He is still a tactless idiot, but she wasn't some sheep being led to the slaughter by an imposing father.

Also, viewing the face before marriage is not only allowed, but promoted in Islamic jurisprudence, even the Salafi version in Saudi Arabia.

There's not a single Islamic school of thought that prevents a potential suitor from looking at the bride's face before marriage. There are authentic Islamic narrations that encourage potential suitors to see the face. Even those schools that emphasize wearing the face veil concede this point.

It is certainly the groom's fault for entering into the marriage without seeing her face. What an idiot. Good luck finding someone else to marry you.

She remembers the moment. The photographer took her picture. She remembers her anger. The man was a stranger. She had never been photographed before. Until they met again 17 years later, she had not been photographed since.

She is 28, perhaps 29, or even 30. No one, not even she, knows for sure.

So she's 28-30, and this is 17 years after she was photographed. So yeah, ~13.
