SC teen dies after consuming three caffeinated drinks

I was at an employment meeting years ago and they had a coffee machine that was free. I had a total of 4 expressos in the space of an hour and though I was going to die. I used to neck multipacks of red bull when I was a college that coupled with chronic anxiety, so maybe my heart is used to going into overdrive.

To add to the caffeine freakout stories, I remember once getting a quintuple shot iced mocha and drinking it down in about ten minutes. I immediately got a headache, and my heart started to pound. Not fun. Caffeine, along with some general nerves and a lack of food, also lead to my very first panic attack! This is a real drug that should be taken seriously and shouldn't be consumed without good judgment.

I feel terrible for the friends and family, but don't fucking turn this into a case of "energy drinks kill!" There is absolutely more to this story - an un-diagnosed heart condition or something.

"Davis' autopsy showed no undiagnosed heart conditions and that Davis was healthy and had no conditions that could have triggered by the caffeine intake. Also, no other drugs or alcohol were found in the teen's system, according to Watts"

Yeah, I'm with the "Has to be some underlying condition" crowd.

2-3 days a Week and buy 2 for $4 Monsters and kill them both within an hour. I'm sure I've done way more caffiene in coffee on any regular off day.

I can drink a ton of soda and feel fine, but 1 energy drink and my heart feels weird and fingers start to feel numb.

OK sorry but drinking coffee, a soda and an energy drink? That's... hm. Not smart. I'm sure people can drink this much caffeine and it not kill them, but... it's still not smart at all and completely unnecessary.

I tried an energy drink once and it didn't make me feel so great. I drink 2 coffee throughout the day but spread out pretty evenly. If I mixed a soda or energy drink into that I'm sure it'd not be so great.

Yikes. We're long overdue in the states for a crackdown on this kind of shit.

It's an awful story but......... we're overdue for a crackdown on ... coffee? That's not a dangerous amount of caffeine for nearly any otherwise healthy person. If you go to a movie theatre and get a large soda or go to a restaurant for dinner and have a coke + refills, you're likely consuming about as much caffeine as the deceased here.

It's very sad, but i'm not sure how you 'crackdown on this kind of shit.'

Plus, caffeine is a substance that your body usually tells you when you have too much, and it's effects work very quickly on the body, unlike other dangerous substances that can be overdone.

This seems more reminiscent of 'water intoxication' which used to be headline grabbing stories, extreme edge cases where you need to use common sense and pay attention to the indicators that your body is giving you.

I had a minor heart attack when I was 20 because of a caffeine overdose and almost died. But it wasn't just three drinks, I had 1.2 grams of caffiene within a few hours between multiple cans of Endorush and a few caffeinated thermogenic pills called Scorch. I had built up a pretty high tolerance for the stuff at that point so I didn't really think about it when I brought a box of the drinks to a halloween party.

It was incredibly painful, you can feel your heart tearing itself apart. I'd been convulsing on the ground for a few hours before anybody found me. I thought I just had a stomache ache so I'd left my group to lie down but it quickly got real bad.

It's taken almost a decade for me to do serious cardio consistently without a lot of pain.

I've seen people drink almost triple that amount in a day's worth from way back in high school to my current job and non of them have flat out died. I'll echo the sentiment that this kid had something else up with his heart and those drinks acted as the catalyst to killing him.

This could be true, but it's still incredibly dumb to drink that much caffeine. If your heart is healthy, doing stuff like that could sure as shit lead to something down the line.

Lots of things can yes, but loading up on that much caffeine or smoking is just asking for it (and hypertension).

Yeah, I'm on the unknown condition conclusion. I drank 6 cups of coffee in less than an hour and I'm still alive. I was shaking like crazy but alive.

Ironically, we used to call that combo a heart attack at the office as a joke. A soda, Red Bull/Monster, and cup of coffee in the first hour of work.

Jesus.
