Scalable games should be the standard on consoles from now on

We got PISSER on the Sony side with the 5 Pro, pumping 100 plus FPS with fake 4K, low ray tracing and additional effects on previously released games. The future playstation 6 will be able to run these games at even higher FPS and potentially fake 8K, the PS7 even higher with fake 16K (internal 720p resolution), and so on so on, thanks to the uncapped frame rate and other scalable features.

Yet we have very prominent releases that because they weren't build with console scalability in mind, and their devs don't care about patching them, they remain stuck in shitty technical specs. Bloodborne, the Arkham Trilogy, MGS V, RDR2. Honestly this is such a bummer, I hope this gen marks the end of that trend and every dev think about scalability on consoles from now on. Uncapped frame rate option and a Fidelity Mode go a long way.

I went and try to build a PC the other day and it was such a mess. Every graphics card has like 50 different brands and configurations, and let's not even talk about the other components. I just wanted a phucking 4090 to obliterate everything, there was an EVGA one, a GEFORCE one, a MSI one, an I-don't-even-know-this-brand one, different numbers and specs on each one of those, what a mess.

Give me a simple console that pumps everything with each subsequent hardware release. Nothing fancy.

Impressive you saw an EVGA 4090 considering it never released.

You aren't bullshitting OP, are you? You wouldn't lie on the internet, would you?

PC gaming is the biggest lie ever. PCs are for fucking spreadsheets and work.

I went and looked at cars the other day, and it was such a mess. There’s a BMW one, a Mercedes one, a Toyota one, and some random brands that feel like they were pulled out of a hat

Then, of course, each one has about 50 versions, like “this one has leather seats” and “this one has leather seats... but with extra leather,” and somehow the price doubles

What a mess

I am a proponent of developers adding a cheat code to the options menu, that unlocks PC-like graphics settings, including FPS lock, resolution, and graphics settings.

but many console users still get an aneurysm if they see more than 2 graphics modes in console games lol

I agree.
With most future consoles very likely being backwards compatible I think at very least every game should have some sort of uncapped framerate toggle (or at very least an optional 60fps cap) on every mode.

It's ridiculous that you can play The Last Guardian at 60fps on ps5 but to do so you need the physical copy and you need to manually prevent it from updating. Simply because the 1.0 version doesn't force a 30fps cap.

RTX 4090 is by Nvidia, so why TF are "MSI", "ASUS" and other chitty brands trying to sell me one? It's confusing. Seems easy for the people that's deep into the PC space. For the layman it's not like "building LEGOS" like Bugaga-like minded people say.

It confused me too at the beginning.

They take the base NVIDIA GPU design and modify it, often with improvements like better cooling systems, factory overclocking, or different aesthetic designs. The GPU itself comes from NVIDIA, those brands are providing their own take on the hardware

I went to buy a pair of sneakers the other day and it was so confusing. There was Nike, Adidas, Reebok, New Balance, and others. It was so confusing.
If sneaker cost over a thousand dollars and some had crippling defects that make them light on fire your sarcastic comparison would work.

Friend bought a GPU card not suitable for his vapor chamber cooling system because his tower has the GPU upright. Etc.

I had hope for a much better PSpro, what we got was a modest boost not worth the price of admission.

PC gaming these days...

Back in the day you had to dig through magazines and catalogues like Computer Shopper to pick out parts or hope they had them at Circuit City or Best Buy. These days, a quick web browser trip to PC part picker and you're set.

DOS, HIMEM, etc.... ..those were the days of having to set up bat files for certain games to get them to load or run at an acceptable level. Shout out to Aces Over the Pacific.

Unless you run into an issue (rare these days) or just want to spend time tweaking settings. PC gaming is pretty damn easy. Not console easy but definitely not like it used to be.

I believe the biggest problem is FOMO and it is perpetuated by the internet/social media. Back in the day, I would go to Sears and pick out the best TV I could find on the showroom floor. I would go home happy and remain happy with my purchase because I wasn't reading hundreds of reviews, videos, posts telling me that X is better than Y with others saying the opposite. Not only do we become susceptible to FOMO for what we purchase, these days, we feel the need to justify it too and we have easy access to start spreading our own reasons that X is better than Y.

(generalizations) We see this in gaming where console gamers want the options and performance of PC without the price and tweaking. Or at least keeping everything hidden behind menus so they do not notice that they are tweaking/getting less performance. PC gamers seem to want the ease of console (talking about what MS seems to be hinting at with an autobooting gaming OS) without the limitations that consoles bring.

I go with the philosophy of playing games where you have fun. Justify it if you want for internet fun but there is no reason to believe we all want the same things and no reason to try to convince others that my way is the best way.

As for wanting a console that just pumps everything. Some people threw a fit at a $700 console price. How much do you believe that would cost?

/end old man ramblings (that was more than I intended to post). 😜

Your friend should research what he’s buying beforehand, and maybe build a normal PC instead of trying to be all flashy.

Using PCparts picker will also warn you beforehand of any potential build issues.

I used a compatibility checker when I bought the parts for my last PC. It even checked if everything would fit into the case.
No big deal at all. Only thing I looked up myself was the noise on fans since I wanted a silent PC for the living room.

Building was a bigger deal but I ended up having fun and I’m looking forward to the next one.

A couch PC with Steam booting into big screen mode using a standard console controller is so close to the console experience that you wouldn’t notice the difference if you didn’t know how the UI looked.

I was a console only player for 20 years. Back in 2012 I decided to figure out the PC and build one. I watched maybe two hours of YouTube videos to figure everything out. I bought a set of parts with an hour of online shopping, spent about 4 hours assembling the parts when they arrived, and it worked fine. It's literally no different than building a home theater system where you need to pick out a display, a receiver, speakers, and connect the cables between them.

Not to mention there are a dozen reputable companies that will sell you a prebuilt gaming PC with whatever graphics card and CPU combination you want. You don't have to do any work or understand anything on those.

If you get so overwhelmed by seeing a 4090 card with different brand labelling, then maybe you stay away from PC builds.

How do you cope when a game on PlayStation has like 3 different versions? How about buying groceries or clothing?

Being apprehensive about your first PC build is natural, but in this day and age, a simple search online, if you are stuck or confused, can take a minute or 2. The GPU is not something you need to get panicked over (assuming you've got a powerful enough PSU and space in your case). Really, the only thing you should make sure about is the CPU being compatible with the motherboard, but even then you can find bundles.
