Scariest Game?

Nameless

I would have to say the original Clocktower on the PSX. Now granted, I havn't played this game in a damn long time, but I don't remember a game bringing out more "fear" in me than it did. Its methods were different than say RE or SH as it created this undying aura of suspense and paranoia, instea dof flat out tyring to scare you.

I mean, you would be in this room, the scary ass music kicks and you know you only have a few seconds to pick a suitable hiding place before The killer entered the room looking for you. So now your hearts pounding as the killer is ransacking the room looking, if he finds you, you can only run since you're unarmed and try to use things like chairs and trash cans to act as a barrier while you escape. The gameplay only adds to the suspense and the anexiety created by the atmosphere as the point/click controls don't give you full control of the character.

Fatal Frame/Zero

I've still yet to finish the first game because it scared the hell out of me while playing at night. The first Silent Hill is a good runner-up though. Siren is scary but that's more because you're scared of the really really hard gameplay rather than the monsters.

Fatal Frame II is definitely up there. It's much scarier than the first, I found. The use of color and light and sound, combined with the very creepy and disturbing storyline, had me in goosebumps for a good majority of the time I played it.

Of course the first Silent Hill took my poor, open-to-suggestion near-sleep mind and did horrible, awful things to it.

Siren was scary on a visceral level only on your first try at a level. When a game kills you so often and makes you learn everything by trial and error like that, it feels far too much like a game to be very scary.

Thief 3: Orphanage Level

Siren: School Level

Silent Hill: Everything...

Doom 3: That bathroom scene...

System Shock 1: Shodan!

The original Silent Hill is still the scariest imo.
i'd agree but.. :)

Silent Hill 1, System Shock 2 (I had to stop playing several times)

Interestingly, Thief X in a few places (Thief undead, Thief 3 orphanage...)

Undying really petrified me in a few spots as well

King's Field (really!)

System Shock 2 wins because its fucked up mood in an Event Horizon way and the sadistic monkeys =/ Fatal Frame is really really close to it, the whole game is a jumpfest and made me turn off the console quite a few times.

Also, while F.E.A.R. is low in horror it has one of the most f*cked up sequences I've ever seen, close to the end
Alma's (dead?!), nude, putrid corpse wakes up, kills the doctor and scares the shit out of you

Aliens vs Predator for the PC was pretty freaky too. Not in the spooky kind of way. But when you were a marine and you go into dark areas with only the motion sensor and light to guide you against the fast moving Aliens that shit freaked me out! :lol

Super Mario Bros. 2.

No, probably Silent Hill. The grainy footage, the tired-looking eyes of the characters, the sound. The whole thing was pretty awesome.

I'm curious about Condemned for the 360. Gonna have to rent that one when it comes out.

ET

Seriously...Silent Hill 2. not for shock value, but pure atmosphere. The sound in that rivals movies these days. I really felt un-easy playing that game especially at night with the lights turned out.

DCX

May sound weird for a few of you.. Splinter Cell 2 MP mode as Mercenary

You are playing in a first person view, with many disadvantages (you run slow, you turn yourself pretty slow --> Spy's are damn fast), you KNOW that somewhere 2 spy's are looking from the dark, you are constantly checking your back, checking dark spots etc.. you are just completely paranoia, or atleast.. I am xD

Silent Hill 2 is the only game that's legitimately spooked me, and that mighta been because I played through the game in one evening with a 101 degree fever. Let's just say I actually *went* to Silent Hill as far as sensory immersion was concerned. :(

I also imagine that, with a 101 degree fever, the music and sound effects didn't do much for your headache? :lol

Not a dig against the music and sound, both are phenomenal - but with a fever? Not so sure.

Quoted for Truth!

Thank god we had the quik turn-around mode.

System Shock 2 for the monkeys and Thief 2 for the undead...although the orphanage in Thief 3 was pretty fucking creepy too.

Condemned for the 360 looks like it'll be spooky as hell.

I got SH2 after reading that hype topic someone made recently. I will start playing that soon.
haha glad i'm not the only who gets caught by the gaf hype! although SH2 is really worth every praise it gets. magnificent game :)

Grrr haven't played Fatal Frame yet.

Silent Hill had some creepy stuff, little black ghost squeaking and fog, bloody rooms.

RE1 when you first walk up on the Zombie and then he looks at you.

RE3 no game has made me jump that much, Nemesis would just show up and I was getting the hell out of there :lol Those birds that busts out the school bus. The part at the police department where it sounds like something is banging on the doors and you know it's Nemesis.

Code Veronica Dreamcast, when that dog drags that body under the stairs and you go into the building and you can see the zombies trying to get in. That worker zombie pulling on the cage trying to get out. Code Vernica has some subtle scares in it. That part when you stand in front of the comp and there's a window behind you :)

Resident Evil - the dogs thru the window the first time... yeah that got me

System Shock 1 and 2 - although 2 was scarier, for sure (Matron Mothers... oh man), #1 had some good parts in it too.

Undying - man that game really creeped me out, especially the very first bit.

Haven't played SH1 but damn, SH2 was scary. The sounds in the game were so realistic and the music was crazy; I remember freaking out when I came out from one of the rooms in to the corridor and the music started getting louder :lol

Those are the only 2 games which i remember that scared me. I may think of more later, but those 2 is the top ones.

RE3 had some fun "oh shit" moments, mostly involving Nemesis chasing you and busting through doors

Project Zero

I was so scared I had to put the controller down and pause it.

Resident Evil Remake

It was the scene where the zombies busted through the window in the hallway and were in the hallway.
I was so scared that I paused it, and went downstairs and wouldn't go back up till someone came with me.

System Shock 2 and Fatal Frame 1 and 2 have already been mentioned.

Alien vs Predator (PC) playing as a Marine made me about shite my pants more than a few times :lol

Since I'll probably never get around to play Thief 3, could somebody tell me about this Orphanage Level?

System Shock 2, Silent Hill (all but 4 can be rather scary), Fatal Frame 1 and 2, and the Thief series.
