Recommend me some scary movies GAF, I want to be completely freaked out before halloween. Please, no Hitchcock (already seen them all), no SAW, no Blair Witch.

I've also seen Poltergeist, The Descent, and the Mist.

thx much

MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN

I had the opportunity to see it in a theater and it was awesome.

I think it's available on demand with some cable providers now.

Event Horizon
looked this bad boy up... Its got only 22% on RT, but I'm legit intrigued. It looks kinda like Dead Space with Morpheus, which can only be awesome. Anyone else seen this?

It scared the shit out of me when I was younger. I went back and watched it again two years ago, and there are a few creepy scenes, but it's a pretty bad movie and not all that frightening either.

Watched The Ruins last night. I don't know if I'd call it scary, but I was pretty tense the whole time. Lots of "oh shit" moments. I recommend it.

As stupid as the premise of Signs ended up becoming towards the end of the movie, there were some parts at the beginning that were genuinely scary. It would have been less hated had it not gone the War of the Worlds route.

Not a horror movie, but Children of Men had me nervous and uneasy in the manner that almost no horror movies do.

Oh, and Bubba Ho Tep is required viewing. Also Evil Dead.

I can count the good horror movies on the hand I shoved in a meat grinder.

Prince of Darkness

This movie is possibly hard to find. I only see it on Encore every few years. It's a truely evil movie.

Alien/s. Possibly the best horror movies ever.

Dawn of the Dead. The zombies have taken over and now it's time to survive among the shit.

28 Days Later. The zombies can run. Doesn't that freak you out?

Jacob's Ladder. Silent Hill would not exist without this movie.

That's five, ok, I counted that on my right hand.

Event Horizon is very scary. Mostly because its totally unexpected type of horror.
Silent Hill, very well made and has great effects, and horror.
[REC] which Quarantine is remake of. It's not too old and its in spanish.
The Signal.
The Shining.

And heck watch Sunshine.

don't watch the happening. we had a thread about it a few days ago, and yes, it really is that bad. stay away from that shit!

this this this AND THIS. :lol

In no particular order:

The Fly (Cronenberg)
Friday the 13th
Halloween (Carpenter)
Hellraiser
Mothman Prophecies
Night of the Living Dead (Romero)
Nightmare on Elm Street
The Omen
Paranormal Activity*
Poltergeist
The Ring
Saw
The Shining
The Strangers
Suspiria
Tenebre
The Thing

I really struggled to find some good, recent "scary" movies. Either I'm just that hardened or Hollywood's gotten pretty tame. This list represents a little bit of everything; I tried to keep it to the genuinely paranormal with the occasional dash of psychotic killer for flavor. Some of these are are only moderately scary, some are thick with suspense, some could've aged a little better, and some are silly-yet-required viewing for any Halloween.

I also feel compelled to point out the lack of Event Horizon. The movie's got style, but it's just dumb at every angle.

(*Pretty much vaulted due to it being an indie movie with a Hollywood version being made. If you can find it online or something, watch it. It's Blair Witch in a haunted house done reasonably well. It's obviously fake, but on Halloween night in a darkened room I can definitely see it keeping a few people up, or at least make 'em sleep with the lights on.)

Inland Empire

The Mothman Prophecies was pretty fucking creepy the first time I watched it. I think that qualifies it for a scary movie.

Whenever anyone mentions Event Horizon, all I can think of is "Papa Bear?....PAPA BEAR?"
How can you take that shit seriously?

This was the last movie that made me lose sleep. I had nightmares for a few days after I seen it.

The Mothman Prophecies is a better X-Files movie than either of the X-Files movies. I don't want to try to explain that statement for fear of tainting the viewings of others, but if you are an X-Files fan, check it out.

Stanley Kubrick's The Shining
Session 9
Jacob's Ladder
The Thing
The Others
Night of the Living Dead (original, black and white version)

A tale of two sisters img

I actually came to here to post this as well. Not only does it give you a few frights but it gives you an incredible sense of guilt at the end of it. Not in a manipulative way, it sets itself up perfectly and delivers. I don't think I've seen another movie that invoked so much guilt in me and it really makes you take a step back and take a look at what you have in life. Great film, but not really 'scary' per se.

Ringu 0,1,2 as well (Japanese).
Ring 0 is retarded, not scary.
Part 1 was scarier in Japanese version, but it's kinda ruined by weak acting (US version is better acted but not as scary).

Anyway, to add a few to the list:

"Dark Water", Jpn version.
"C'est arrivé près de chez vous" (It happened near you). It's technically a black comedy, but the way it's shot makes it one of the most disturbing movies ever.

If you like "Tale of Two sisters", check out "Hanzel an Gretel" as well (also Korean).
