Scary Movie-AGE....bwahahaha

I dont remember watching many scary movies as a kid, but I do remember one of the puppetmaster movies freaking me out. I started crying when the puppet started drilling a hole into some dudes head. Freaky stuff.

Demons, while not necessarily scary, is a great film for this time of the year. Any movie featuring a man brandishing a kitana while riding a motorcycle in a movie theater is a must see.

Also, the Salem's Lot miniseries from '79 is pretty frightening.

This might be one of the 10 greatest films of the 80s.

A lot of love for Mothman Prophecies... Maybe I'll check this movie out. Anyone else have any opinions on Se7en? It looks pretty cool, but rottentomatoes says that its a drama instead of horror/ suspense....

The Mothman Prophecies is a better X-Files movie than either of the X-Files movies. I don't want to try to explain that statement for fear of tainting the viewings of others, but if you are an X-Files fan, check it out.

I never thought of it like that, but you're right...so right.

The rumors and trivia associated with Rosemarys Baby are almost as much fun as the movie itself. My favorite is the “seven degrees of separation” connection. Roman Polanski’s wife, Sharon Tate, was murdered by the followers of Charles Manson, who called their death spree “Helter Skelter” after the 1968 song by the Beatles…The Beatles leader John Lennon was murdered in a New York apartment building called The Dakota…which is where Rosemarys Baby was filmed. Creepy.

the original texas chainsaw massacre has one of the scariest atmospheres i have seen in horror films. im not saying it was a good movie, but god, the first half of it before anything even happens, made me leave the lights on.

looked this bad boy up... Its got only 22% on RT, but I'm legit intrigued. It looks kinda like Dead Space with Morpheus, which can only be awesome. Anyone else seen this?

Best non-franchise Hellraiser movie! Love it.

Watched The Ruins last night. I don't know if I'd call it scary, but I was pretty tense the whole time. Lots of "oh shit" moments. I recommend it.

I really liked this more than I thought I would. Very tense.

(Re: The Ruins) Same here, wife made me watch with her and I couldn't stop watching once it was under way.

DAWN OF THE DEAD BETTER THAN CARPENTER'S HALLOWEEN!?!?

AAHAHAHALOLOLOL WTF :lol :lol :lol

No. Just no. I don't care about how thick Romero's commentary is on society, it's a pile of shit compared to Halloween. Good zombie flick though.

Shaun of the Dead even being on the list pisses me off. It's fucking hilarious and a great movie, but if we're doing a list of the best straight-up horror films ever, no.

ONE LAST THING: Suspiria is way too low on the list.

Most scary movies don't even come close to being spooky nowadays. I guess they are kind of like Christmas when your a kid. You have to believe in them for it to be scary. Just like I believed in Santa Claus and that he actually brought gifts at night on christmas eve.

I will recommend Dead Silence though, I watched it recently by myself in the dark and it was genuinely spooky. I also enjoyed Exorcist the Beginning anything that is demonic seems believable to me but thats my belief so I won't get into that.

Silent Hill has great production because the atmosphere is so amazing. I just thought it ended with a damn thud. Ending was just so stupid.

The Happening isn't even close to scary and just pretty much stinks.

The worst scary movie I saw recently was BoogieMan, it actually had some jump moments in it but was one of the worst most incoherent pieces of shit I have ever paid money to see!

Cure
Pulse (the original)
The Haunting (the original)
The Ring (the original)
Shutter (the orig... goddammit, they're all the original, OK?!)
Carnival of Souls
A Tale of Two Sisters
The Thing (actually, this one isn't)
Ghostwatch (the BBC thing)
Antarctic Journal
REC
The Beyond
Retribution

If you are like me and the whole pop out of no where and scream thing doesnt really scare you, then you want to go for one that will just creep you the fuck out. The exorcism of emily rose will do that without a doubt. Only movie to actually freak me out bad in a long time.

Emily Rose was good, its creepy moments were extremely creepy. It is more of a courtroom drama than anything but its a pretty effective film.

You guys who said the Ruins are on crack... one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Bleh... However, great suggestions on Event Horizon and Mothman.

I just got "The Thing" and "Evil Dead" ... cany anyone confirm or deny their scariness?

Also gotta drop a recommendation of my own. Rear Window and Vertigo = legendary

Evil Dead is one of my favourite movies but it's not scary. So don't go into it expecting to get scared. It's just a fuck off awesome cool movie with awesome lines and awesome Bruce Campbell at his most awesome.

The Thing is scary. Real scary.

here's two that havent been mentioned yet.

I can't believe someone else remembers Ghostwatch. I watched it "live" one halloween when I was a kid. I didn't know it was fake and I have never been more genuinely scared going to bed in my life. I think it traumatised a whole generation of children. I remember one guy comitted suicide because of it and the BBC got sued I think.

For those who don't know it was a fake documentary about a team of ghost hunters stationed at haunted places across england. It was broadcast "live" halloween night (I think). It was obviously scripted and pre recorded but it was very convincing and a lot of people thought it was for real - even Michael Parkinson was hosting it. I remember the poltergeist house where the little girl starting talking in a weird voice and the noise of the cats under the stairs still gives me the creeps. Then the presenter disappeared live on air......

Good to see some love for Event Horizon and Dead Silence. Both films very underrated imo. As was Darkness Falls. I don't understand the venomous hate that flick gets, it was very enjoyable.

You also can't got wrong with the classics - Evil Dead 1&2, The Thing, The Exorcist etc.

man... i feel like im the only person who didnt like the ruins or the descent..... Maybe I just dont get the whole young people do normal stuff that turns into crazy death trap genre stuff...

I really prefer psychological stuff that messes with your head. ie, Blair Witch Project didn't show me the witch or killer, but I thought it was great.

Ringu, The Ruins, The Strangers (not frightening but still pretty scary), The Messengers, and When a Stranger Calls (the remake). Now about that last one, I know it got a lot of negative reviews but I liked it because of the setting, a pretty girl in a scary house in the middle of nowhere. I know:D.

30 Days of Night. Not exactly my first choice, but a lot of other greats already mentioned in the thread.

I'll be checking out a few recommendations in this thread as well. It's been a while since I've been scared by a horror film. Not the kind of scared that you might get in real life when presented with danger, but that safe, fun kind of scared you get from watching a good horror film for the first time. Games on the other hand, like SH and Dead Space, still scare the shit out of me.

I thought 30 days of night was terrible, it started off really good and then it somehow went to complete shit.

The Thing I can watch anytime its on TV. One of my fave movies as a kid and still one of my faves.

As a kid Nightmare on Elm Street had me scared pissless. How many movies have a scene in them where it's daylight and the scene is still spooky as hell?! That freddy chant was burned into my memory for years. I even have it as a ringtone on my phone now.

The Descent. Seriously.
descent.jpg

I generally despise horror films (b/c most of them are a waste of time), but The Descent is amazing.

The Orphanage, if you don't mind subtitles.

\/\/\/ Haha! Beat you by 3 minutes. And yes, it's REALLY good. Creepy and suspenseful as hell.

Halloween
Suspiria
The Thing
My Bloody Valentine
The Fog
Inferno
Tenebre
Phenomena
Opera
A Nightmare On Elm Street

I know I'll catch shit for horror film blasphemy, but I tried to watch The Thing about a month ago when it came out on BD and I couldn't keep myself awake. There are a lot of horror films that take 30-50 minutes to set up everything (Alien first comes to mind), but in this film I just couldn't stand it. At least the Descent's set-up made it interesting by throwing some spelunking thrills in there before the shit hits the fan.

People are recommending Event Horizon? Really?
I watched it again just the other day, and it's not scary at all. It kicks soooo much ass until the very end, then it just turns into shit.

The Descent (already in OP, I know)
The Orphanage
Kairo (the original Pulse)
[REC]
Mothman Prophecies (even worse cause I live right beside where it happened)
The Exorcist

el orfanato or the orphanage ?

also does anyone know what happened to "Paranormal Activity : evidence of a haunting"? that looked creepy as fuck

Might have to try out The Descent and [REC] myself. Like many others in this thread, it's been a long time since I seen a good horror movie. Most of them just rely on gore these days and it just isn't interesting. I prefer atmosphere and good direction to blood splatters and cut off limbs.

The Dark Side of the Moon

I remembered seeing that but i can barely remember what happend in it. I believed it's a horror movie i think. Too lazy to google it up.

to me is # 1 scariest movie of all is " The Exorcist" 1973 with Linda Blair in it.

Yeah, the ending of The Descent sucks also.

Event Horizon's suck starts much sooner though. As soon as they bring "hell" into it, the whole thing goes to shit.
