A schoolgirl hanged herself after her father insisted she let him check her mobile phone for abusive messages, an inquest heard yesterday.
David Stringer said he found his daughter Jade, 14, hanging from a stairwell by a pink scarf when he went to look in on her about half an hour after she began ‘sulking’ in her bedroom.
He cut her down and she was taken to hospital in a critical condition, but died six days later.

The inquest heard that Jade’s parents, who are separated, had been worried she was receiving abusive text messages from a boy she had accused of hitting her.
Jade’s mother, Natalie Ingoe, 32, told the hearing that her daughter, who had done well at school, started wearing make-up and wanting to go out at night around the age of 12 or 13.
‘I suppose the normal teenage things,’ she added.
But in March 2011, Mr Stringer, 32, and Mrs Ingoe discovered that she was sleeping with a boyfriend and spoke to his parents to make sure they were never left unsupervised.

Fucking crazy shit right GAF?!

Unfortunate, but the subject makes it sound like she killed herself because her phone was taken away. It looks like there was something on that phone that she thought was so damning and shameful that it would ruin herself in the eyes of her family and peers forever. Considering there were texts from a supposedly abusive boyfriend, I can believe it.

I also think we'll never see what they ACTUALLY found on that phone that she was so worried about.

Edit: wait, she died 6 days later from a hanging, which was more than likely strangulation rather than the snapping of the neck? Doesn't that sound REALLY odd?

Sad. I have two daughters and know I'll be in for a minefield of teenage hormones in a decade, but hopefully not like this.

Man they had her young, though. I'm the same age as the parents and my oldest is 3.

I fucking hate smart phone culture. You've got students and adults thinking that they can't do without their phones for a period over 15 minutes. They actually start to get anxiety. It is depressing and stupid as hell.

Realistically though, what could be THAT bad

If I had to guess, sex with a boy in an extremely religious family. Or the boyfriend found something out like the girl was gay and was threatening to tell everyone. If they haven't brought charges up against the boy for harrassment or anything though, it was probably just sexts and photos.

Sad.

Most likely there was not enough force to break her neck. It's sad to think about it but she basically was being strangled to death.

Wow, that's horrid.

Why they don't have regular psychology classes and mental health (like physical health) checkups at middle/highschool is curious to me. It seems important to treat mental issues as serious as physical issues, especially at such a vulnerable age. Teaching kids/teens about the mind and how it works, as well as chemical imbalances (and trauma's) should be an important subject...

No...she probably died form asphyxiation related problems of a failed hanging.

6 days later?
life support

Hmm, I suppose...It was my understanding that with asphyxiation, the lack of oxygen to your body would simply shut your body down, and if it was a case where she was on life support for 6 days without recovery, the rest of her body would be too fargone to recover.

But I'm no doctor.

Probably was brain dead from lack of oxygen.

My theory is she wanted to teach her parents a lesson and act the drama queen by pretending to do this but fucked up and actually hanged herself. No way does a person intentionally kill them self after an hour and a half of no phone.

Not really. She's a kid and is unlikely to have known what she was doing. I guess she didn't do it 'properly' and ended up giving herself brain damage via asphyxiation instead.

Observe this all the time.

Started to notice how I'm becoming more and more absorbed in my phone and social networking recently, so have taken some measures to counter this such as leaving my phone in my room, instead of taking it out with m constantly.

I'm a pretty cynical person so it's probably this. Basically a temper tantrum gone horribly, horribly wrong.

What could have been on her phone that she was so hung up about? She was probably trying to protect the boyfriend.

Cell phones give kids too much freedom, IMO. I wonder how different my life would have been if I grew up with today's phones.

All the phone does is become a trigger for some more serious mental problems and issues w/ her life. Generally people break down at the little things because we condition ourselves to handle the bigger things...

WHO THE FUCK ATE MY HARDBOILED EGGS?!!?

I see what you did there...

32-14= 18. Yikes, they were practically kids when they had her.

I'm not sure what to take from the story, very tragic; but I guess there needs to be more emphasis within a household to teach kids going in their teenage years to never feel ashamed.

You've got a lot to learn about teens and cell phones, friend.

Or maybe there was something she considered so shameful and embarrassing on the phone that she would rather die than have to deal with it. To a depressed young girl that might seem logical.

It is not uncommon for young people to commit suicide over something like that.

She began to wear makeup, go out at night and was having sex when she was just 12 years old? Story is beginning to make a bit more sense now, I can understand why her father took the phone off her to look at the messages. This is one of those examples that make me question whether good parenting is a matter of skill or just luck

No, that's probably exactly it. Kids get things taken away. They usually get them back unless something REALLY terrible happened. My guess is there was something incredibly damning on that phone.

Column A, Column B. Not all kids/parents/schools/environments/friends are created equal. The future's not set. There's no fate but what we make for ourselves. It's easy to lose sight of that, or think that very notion damns you to nothingness.

I remember my sister freaking the fuck out after losing phone privlidges when I was a kid. This was pre-cellphones too so I can only imagine how she would have reacted if she cellphones were around at the time.

Kids that age have difficulty seeing consequences more than about a day into the future. Was it the loss of the phone or something on the phone, we'll never know; but whatever it was she felt like her life was over. Just about every kid that age will feel that way at some point.

At any rate, I feel bad for parents at this time in technology, especially with phones. So many parents have no idea what those phones are capable of doing.
