An absolute gem of a game. Have completed it several times.

Man. I remember borrowing this game abs strategy guide from a friend when I was a kid. I was pretty hooked on it. Absolutely loved the music and atmosphere of this game. I was also shocked as a child when I faced the final boss.

I don't think a game has managed to make me feel so transported into a magical and fantastical world than this one. Playing this as a kid was like being in a fairy tale. Hiroki Kikuta's music contributes immensely to the mystical atmosphere.

The gameplay has a lot of shortcomings, but it's still one of my personal favorites.

One of my top SNES/Squaresoft tracks from the 90s. Immediate nostalgia/memory rush hearing this one. HS sleepovers with the multitap and everyone staying up grinding til 4AM on a Saturday.

CHOBIN HOOD!

Edit: Also try to get that title for the thread fixed

I only got to play this on the ZSNES emulator back when emulation was just starting out. In my country, it was really hard to find JRPGs during the peak of the SNES era.

Secret of Mana, even running on a CRT monitor through the emulator, was insanely good. I still remember the soundtrack so well.

Never got to finish this one. For any fans I recommend to don't skip on Secret of Evermore, similar game mechanics in a whole new settings, with music from Jeremy Soule and, overall, the better game.

Just teasing lmao, although I really mean it, love that game.

It's cool that we got 3 similar games and the 3 of them being so great. Would be nice to get an action-JRPG with that "hit and wait" combat system again, but that probably wouldn't fly among the younger or more casual people.

Kinda crazy to have a game's distance to its release be larger than the years left for those who played it when it released.

Pretty much true of every game from that era, and in another decade or two, the amount of people who've played these games at release will start quickly fading away to 0 as everyone enters the end of life in their 70s and 80s who's played it.

Basically a bunch of old ass fucks in this thread, one foot in the grave.

One of the best 90s experiences I´ve ever had.
Played it together with a friend at new years eve. Parents had a party going and we were busy slaying monsters and leveling up. At midnight we took 15 minutes off to celebrate before continuing exploring the world. I still have the Level99 save, if the battery is still holding up, that is.

I´m still listening to the soundtrack from time to time.
A game with it´s flaws (especially the companions AI) but I honestly prefer it to A Link to the Past.

Um... I made the old joke, but kids who played this game are in their 40s now. Long time to go until we hit 70 and 80.

I hate that there's no easy, legal way to play that without buying a SNES and hunting down a copy :messenger_pensive:

Yeah same, I wish the game got more love. A re-release maybe, or even an HD2D remake would be cool.

Game's world and setting was so unique.

Not even just the setting and world, but that whole spellcrafting system was unlike anything else I had seen at the time. Gathering mats as much as you were grinding out kills and exploring. And of course the soundtrack.

Yeah! Imo the alchemy system felt like a way of "fixing" Mana's spell system that allows you to spam magic non-stop, slowing the combat's pace to a crawl. In Evermore you value your magic spells much more thanks to them requiring ingredients, and I really appreciated that.

Damn game is super unique in many ways. What a gem.

One of my SNES favorites, I own only the cartridge, one day I will get it CIB. My SNES copy got almost all the spells maxed out. My Switch version in Collection of Mana hasn't it all maxed though. And it was a far better experience personally than Secret of Evermore. By the way, I played Seiken Densetsu 3 / Trials of Mana from Collection of Mana and it felt awful, very laggy, my emulator experience decades ago was better, or so I thought. Never emulated it again to compare.

True, but also 40s to 70 is 20-something years, which sadly will probably pass in the blink of an eye so to speak haha. Especially if you have kids. Long time, but also not really!

Must have sunk hundreds of hours into this as a kid. I remember it was one of those $80-$90 games. I think I saw an ad in some comic book. I got this and Clay Fighter I think around 5th grade Christmas. Got bored with Clay Fighter pretty quick but Secret of Mana I played for years.

I didn't have too much RPG or adventure experience (Zelda on NES was one of my faves though, and I'd probably played through Link to the Past with cousins though I'd never owned it) what being a little kid that depended on parents for games but this one introduced an epic world.

I remember getting to the first castle/dungeon and thinking wow this is a cool game, little did I realize it was like 10% of the game so far and I was thinking it was almost over. The only other experience I've had like this was Dragon Warrior 4 on NES, can't remember if it was before or after Secret of Mana but that game blew me away as I didn't realize just how big the game actually was.

No need to kick us old fucks in the balls like that. It's a celebration thread man, have some mercy for crying out loud 😅

One of my greatest gaming joys was being about 3 or 4 hours into the Secret of Mana and realizing that it was a sequel to Final Fantasy Adventure. The box didn't really make it clear and it had a completely different name, so it wasn't until I started recognizing a few of the same monsters and the way the action bar worked that it all clicked for me.

I tried to play that remake abomination a few years ago and it felt like a mobile game through and through. I will eventually go back and replay this at some point. Maybe even later this year on my SNES Classic.

Loved this as a child, today despite the flaws being more obvious I still do. Shame they never released the sequel over here at the time though, they really pushed the limits of what the SNES could do. I didn't even hate the remake, even if it looked like a mobile game and crashed every 5 minutes.

One of my all time favorite RPG titles. My brother and I played this in two player mode the entire way through multiple times. My oldest brother had lent us a multi adapter it was how we discovered the Mana Sword with our neighborhood buddy while spamming magic during the final battle. Good time. An all time classic for sure with a memorable soundtrack.

From the amazing boot up:

HOT TAKE here, but while the remake looks like absolute dogshit, it plays better than the OG release. If people had to choose between which version to play, the correct choice is obviously the SNES one, but that was surprisingly janky and a good remake wouldn't have been the worst thing ever (and I'm usually against remakes).

I always thought since it was a flop and made by a US Studio, Square wanted to disown Evermore.

They didn't even bother to release it in Japan.

Maybe we will see if they will acknowledge it's 30th Anniversary. Which is in October.

My brother saved up forever to buy this, and we could never find it at any stores in our area. Our family went on vacation to Colorado that summer, and he finally found it at a store out there. We had to wait almost two weeks before we could play it at home.
One of the greatest gaming experiences I can remember, playing it with him for so many hours.

You think there is really a big difference between 20 and 40 in the grand scheme of things? If you're in your 20s now, it may feel like there is a big difference, but I guarantee you 20 year olds got that same one foot in the grave whether you realize it or not. :-P

Now back to talking about one of the best SNES games of all time.

Can you imagine if we got the full snes cd version of this? The weapon variety makes this more fun than the sequel in my opinion even though SD3 is probably an overall better game.

Thanks for that brief history of time, Mr. Hawking.

Man the music in this game is fucking unreal. So many crazy rhythms and intricate tunes, really heavy on the percussion. I notice something new every time I listen to it.

There's a kickass arranged soundtrack called "Secret of Mana Genesis" you can find on all the streaming platforms, it's on regular rotation for me:

Roll eyes all you want, just crazy to think of celebrating a game from 32 years ago still, and thinking ahead if people will still be making these threads 20 or 30 years from now! That's all. Then realizing before long there won't be anyone left who actually played it at release!

The Remake should've been 2DHD.

I'm not interested in playing it but it does have the best boss theme ever.

Man that crappy remake was such a missed opportunity. I don't know why they decided that budget 3D graphics were a good fit for a remake of a game with gorgeous, well-animated sprite graphics.

I wish they'd just fixed the janky ass gameplay and kept everything else as faithful as possible

See the FFT Remaster. They'd probably end up making a blurfest like that.

My friend traded me his Turbografx 16, the CD add on with a nice carrying case and the arcade card + all of his games for my SNES and this game back in the day. I then turned around and sold the whole collection to a pawn shop for about $450 only to get an SNES back with another copy of this game because I liked it so much. I made a little less than a $200 profit. Fun times.
