SEGA Files New Trademark for Skies of Arcadia

adamsapple

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Update:

The article is not new, the new news is that a trademark has been filed this month.

My bad.

The Skies of Arcadia trademark was filed on Thursday, January 16, according to the official filing. It later went public on Friday, January 24. Although the trademark is not definitive confirmation of a new game, it’s worth noting that SEGA has been filing trademarks for many of its dormant IPs following the announcement of several SEGA revivals in December 2023.

Original:

Skies of Arcadia, the JRPG from Overworks, is reportedly getting the remaster treatment. The information comes via the XboxEra Podcast that aired on Sunday night.

Initially released in 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast, Skies of Arcadia was a game that focused on world exploration. The game saw you play as an air pilot named Vyse who, along with his friends, works to stop the Vuluan Empire from getting ancient weapons to destroy the world.

The gameplay focuses on traditional JRPG elements with turn-based combat and experience points for leveling up your characters. Exploration occurs via foot and through the air, as the name would suggest.

After the Dreamcast went under in the early 2000s, the game was launched on Nintendo GameCube in 2002.

Insider Gaming did happen to come across an image from the apparent remaster, but we’ve yet to confirm its 100% legitimacy. So, please, take the photo with a grain of salt for now.

Related: A trademark was also recently filed, so this is a very likely thing.

I hope this is true cause that game kicks loads of ass but the source for this is XboxEra who have about as much credibility as me in terms of leaking stuff and the image i looked at shows us virtually nothing and if you told me it was a screenshot from the gamecube version of the game i'd believe you.

Nice, just include the changes from the better Gamecube release, give us battle speed and encounter rate sliders at 4k 60+ fps, and we're good. Bonus points if they wanna upgrade some textures and models, but really I just want a PC release, and have it run on my Steam Deck.

Instead of a remaster, I'm hoping for a new game. I love the first game and I've been wanting a sequel ever since

While this would be amazing, I feel like a Remake or Remaster would be required so that people have a chance to play the game and meet the characters before a sequel given the length of time.

A Remake would also allow them to finally do the right thing and introduce Piastol as a potential secret 4th party member once you complete her quest line, considering how close to the end of the game that would be, they would not have to change many scenes to accommodate her.

It always felt weird how potential party member she felt in Legends and it was just closed off after the quest line.

Allowing an entirely free team at the end of the game would be awesome too. Always dreamed to be able to do this in Phantasy Star IV but couldn't :(

Phantasy Star II was awesome for this. You could change your team at any moment to adjust to the dungeons.

I'm so happy. I would love to play this again. I'd love updated character models and animations, 60fps, voice acting, new textures and the fast forward button, but tbh I'd pay $25 to get a simple uprez port too.

I played the Legends version of the game and I remember really loving Piastol quest line. I was surprised that she didn't join my group as a playable character

Skies of Arcadia was criminally underlooked given its quality and pedigree.

I also remember it sold really badly on both DC and GC.

I'll check out a new one I'm interested in how they do it. Beat the first on DC and never wanted to look back after the insane number of random encounters. I warned my friend to get Grandia II instead, he later admitted he fell asleep while playing it and should have gotten Grandia to begin with lol. I like when RPGs let you see the enemy on screen, if Pokemon Let's Go! used actual RPG battles instead of throwing balls it would be like my perfect Pokemon title (but oh well).

Grandia II instead
Grandia II is so easy you spam attack and you are done.

Skies of Arcadia actually had some work done around difficulty balance, so some dungeons, battles and bosses can be quite challenging. But it is definitely a slow game, especially the transitions in and out of battle. Aerial battles also take forever, and they are too easy. Still much more engaging than Grandia II.

I mean, I beat both near each other. SOA just turned into a slog while I found Grandia II fun and engaging. At the time I didn't think Grandia II was that easy, I remember having to start over many bosses, especially Melfice, because some save points had a tendency to lock you out of backtracking before the boss to level up or get items, and I bum rushed the game with little leveling. I also just wasn't as good at games lol

Played both back then on DC (after Evolution, which I really enjoyed), and replayed them several times as well, and Skies is simply a much better RPG as far as I am concerned. It set the standard for a large scale, open adventure in 3D, huge world to explore with tons of things happening.

I agree with all this, I simply liked Grandia II's battle system and disliked the random encounters in Skies. So despite all that I personally had more fun with GII. My friend at the time was a Final Fantasy NES nut. HE said he fell asleep. It's a preference.

It was slow and full of random encounters, and it didn’t do a very good job of explaining its basics.
I tried three times to get into it, and I always bounced back after a couple of hours. I keep telling myself I’ll try again someday, but never come around to actually do it (I have the game on GC).

That's too bad. Especially as the GC game has faster transitions for battles, so you already have a smoother experience. Hope you give it another try ! It is the kind of game that needs you to stick with it for a while before you really get into the story.

I saw this too, hopefully not just more dreams for Sega to crush for me.

I still remember when I bought both of these games - I was doing my typical scouting at thrift stores and pawn shops, I walked in and saw two brand new looking copies of Skies of Arcadia and Grandia II, 19.99 each. Still have those copies to this day, great games.

A remaster hopefully would allow adjustment of encounter rate or just lower it. It would be crazy not to do it as I can’t see it going over well in 2025 otherwise.

And yeah, let us set battle speed as well.

I did my part. Both games new $50. Sega didn't fail because of me lol

Though I don't agree that Skies of Arcadia is a better RPG than the legendary Grandia II. I'm glad I wasn't one of the few that played these games back in the day on DC.

I played the gamecube "remaster" or whatever it was called back then. Really enjoyed it. I'd love to have a steam port. Get nightdive to do a shine up on it.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!

Both are awesome imo, but Skies definitely feels more epic & grand not being largely isometric or small scale. Still, Grandia II is charming with fun combat. It'd probably have a better reputation if the English va wasn't so bad & the PS2 version so botched, jagged & blurry with dodgy extra FMVs.

Mind, the draw distance in the overworld is technically better on GameCube but that also makes it look like an obvious line rolling ahead as you travel when on Dreamcast stuff fade in more gradually chunk by chunk so it's not as obvious of a sky corridor, I hope they do a decent effect for any port.

Anyway, Skies of Arcadia was certainly among the first true modern JRPG leaving the previous generation games behind, Square then took over with higher budgets and less cartoony styles while Dreamcast also saw a glimpse of that future with stuff like Sakura Wars 3 and 4 looking damn amazing.

Would love to play it on PS5 or PC fully remastered with new content and multiplayer/coop ship battles against the armada and monsters.

Ok I'll stop day dreaming 😆

To my shame, this is one of those classical JRPG's that I haven't played yet. A re-release will make it a lot more easier for me to get a hands on, so I hope it's true.

This game was full of awesome moments with sweet effects it dropped once and never used again like it was free, the budget and effort was serious shit for the time. Anybody wanna post their favorite particularly cool bits? That one train fighting sequence for sure has some fans. I'll post mine too.

Here's one of mine, some amazing effects casually thrown in the middle of the first dungeon, never to be seen again like it was effortless to device and include. They could have easily put the switch somewhere off the main screen so you "miss" the transformation and just return to see the result 🤯
