Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Evenball

Jack Flack always escapes!
It ran me 250, and it has the registration card in it (not that i care, but i guess that makes it super complete, so neat)

Also, Irish, shockingly enough, i'm still missing 4 games, but they are Toughman Contest, Virtua Fighter, Star Trek, and BC Racers. I'm gonna get them as i can, but yeah, it is basically done.

Do you also have the Spot Goes Hollywood 32X repro?

I'm being serious. I'm aware the game is mediocore, but i'm really trying to be subjective and stuff. Plus, it means i could possibly start work on my Spider-Man series review. There are a lot of Spider-Man games between Genesis and the 2 add-ons, and Maximum Carnage is the best one, which is saying a lot, since most people seem to really dislike that game. So many chances for an awesome game, and at best we got only ok. What a shame...

Edit: Also, nah, i don't count the repros. Only way i'm getting Virtua Hamster is if someone gave it to me.

Like, i can totally see why its probably actually awful to some people, but it just has this really raw, industrial feeling sound going on. I don't know, i kind of dig it.

Yes - if the YM chip was good for anything, it was industrial fizzing and clunking noises (ooh, ooh, can I be cheeky and blatantly plug one of my own music Megadrive-style musical tracks here? Similar industrial theme!)

I don't know if it was Stockholm Syndrome (as it was the first one i played,) but my favourite Spidey game from the era was actually the Master System version of "...Vs The Kingpin." I was so disappointed when I got round to trying the MD version.

I really want to track down Rolling Thunder 3. Funnily enough it never saw a Japanese release despite being developed in Japan.
Is there a list of games from Japanese companies that weren't released in Japan? They're such an interesting oddity.

Stopped by Goodwill yesterday and found a Hi-Def Genesis for $15

No cables/controllers tho. =/

That wouldn't be the Seattle Goodwill by chance, would it? I was just there yesterday and saw one for exactly the same price and just the system but passed on it, I've already got two Hi-Def systems, plus a model 2 and 3 so it's no big loss.

Just picked up a copy of PTO with Map for 5 bucks at a gaming store today, along with some other Sega games (Including a Strip Majhong anime game for the Saturn). Good day.

Fixed my Wondermega; it was the drive belt. Just took one out of an old DVD drive and swapped them out and it works like new.

If any one is wondering, here is what Wondermega Svideo to LCD HD TV looks like without any upscaling equipment. Not great, but surprisingly decent.

Good in stand still, but a little blurry in motion. There is some weird smoothing going on around the edges as well. Not bad until I can get an XRGB (and the WM modded).

:( No joke, Vectorman, Comix Zone and
Sonic 3D Blast...I know
were the three games that gave me a twinge of regret that our household was decidedly a Nintendo household. Then I went home and played Donkey Kong Country 2 and Mario RPG and forgot about it. Vectorman is still a pretty fun riff on the action genre, for what it's worth.

That's sad. The original Vectorman is still one of my favorite games on the Genesis. Top 3.

I have this dream of Vectorman coming back as a Vanquish-inspired TPS with ridiculous character animations and crazy gravity physics. The soundtrack would be drum and bass remixes of the older tracks.

I don't think I could get more unbelievably hyped for a game than that.

Will watch. Curse is easily my least favorite MD import I own, but that box art is fire, lol.

The music was really solid. I dug it, but its short, its very by-the-books, and its not terribly difficult. It was given to me though, so i didn't lose any money on it. Was impressive graphically for its release though.

Whatever happened to that Vectorman PS2 game?

A huge part of Vectorman was the character animation. Making a bad Ratchet and Clank game doesn't really fit the mold, to me.

It got cancelled. People said it was really bad.
It also looked nothing like Vectorman.

Like, the whole gimmick was the "Orbot" thing, letting you take his component parts and make all kinds of wacky forms out of it - but the PS2 game wasn't havin' that. Instead we got the most generic Master Chief lookalike imaginable out of it:

Good riddance.

That looks much worse than I remember lol.

I'm going in on the Mega amp mod. My good man Bapho doing god... err... the devil's work for me.

Mega amp?

Mega amp?

The best way I can put it is that its a mod that allows you to customize how a megadrive sounds. You can make a model 2 sound more like a model 1 or you can expand the audio range of both model 1/2 by "unfiltering" the audio.

Here.

Unfiltered sound is enough for me to dive in, but I've also been looking for a means to greatly reduce or eliminate the models 1's contant backgroung hissing. Not sure if thisll do it, but here's hoping.

Yeah I remember that, truly awful. Nothing of value was lost, it seems.

And yet everyday, I still hope and pray that Vectorman can come back in some form. I really don't think that it'd be too hard to make him contemporary. If not drum and bass, than a sort of dubstep vibe would work too. The kids like dubstep, right?

I'm not sure I get it. Are we supposed to gather all the components and solder everything on a breadboard? No one is selling kits?

Near the end of that thread you'll see posts talking about some printed boards being made. Bapho tracked them down. Aparently the same dude with NES RGB board has 'em. Small world.

Was the CDX released in Japan? I know Asia (PAL) and Europe got the Multi-Mega.
Hmm, I dunno. Haven't been able to find anything confirming it. The 32X isn't officially supposed to be used with the CDX anyway. I did hook it up, just to get it working, but I don't know if it's detrimental to do it long term.
