so i'm starting a small side project with fellow gaffer (and irl friend) CMDBob. We are using SGDK which is an excellent homebrew sdk that is proving to be suprisingly easy to use, despite having to get used to the limitations of c rather than the c++ im used to :) we are thinking of attempting a side scrolling shmup that takes place on a cylindrical arena akin to resogun. it should be fairly simple to "simulate" the game world by usng a front and rear plane that scroll in opposite directions. Im just using gens kmod for debugging at the moment, but fortunately I also have a flash drive for m megadrive, so I can do some hardware testing later on. :)

wish us luck!

Sounds great!! Will you be documenting you project and progress somewhere like a blog/website?

Gyrian thats one hell of a group of games you picked up. I would be happy with any one of those. I really want to pick up Tatsujin. Its one of those great games thats easily attainable and not to expensive. They look in great condition. The stick looks fantastic too. Enjoy!

Go for it! It's not too hard to find at a reasonable price in good shape. :D
I just realized Taito put out a PCE version, wonder how it compared? Interesting that this got two home conversion from different companies and not Toaplan themselves.

The PCE version of Tatsujin/Truxton is a lot more expensive than the Genesis one. It's supposed to be superior, but the price difference may be a deal breaker.

The main difference between the two is music (imho the MD one sounds better) and the side bar.

On the PCE version lives and bombs are at the bottom with power level and score beeing at the top. The resolution is 256*256 (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

The MD version (made by Sega themselves) has a right side bar with lives, bombs, score, loop/level and power level. It's also 320*240 and has better details.

One last thing, the MD version can be found for 25-30$, the PCE version is 300+

I've made the terrible decision to start collecting video games. I've been away from the Genesis scene for about fifteen years. I currently own two Genesis games. Gave away all my Genesis carts years ago due to storage and the dumb idea that I'd never want them again. I'm just beginning to try and rebuild a collection although I can tell by the prices I'm not alone. I do still have a few of my Sega CD games.

I picked this up for like ten or fifteen bucks in 1999. Very surprised by current pricing.

Why aren't the consoles hooked up? It's bothering me!
The older consoles don't have the controller length for me to keep hooked up there and be usable. I just keep them there for display. This is a side game/computer room.

Been playing the hell out of Shining Force the last week. Always had a big blind spot on Shining Force and Phantasy Star series which I am in the middle of taking care of. Really good stuff.

I will finish Phantasy Star 2 before 4. I have to lol. I think I need to just start again since I'm probably not sure what I did last.

Also man, is Lunar's Sega CD soundtrack good or what? Just reached Black rose st. with Nash the other day.

I'm glad I played through Phantasy Star 2 on my phone, despite the official IOS port having less than the greatest emulation. The portable nature helped with the grind: waiting for the bus? Grind a couple battles. Break at work? Grind a couple more.

As for Lunar... "Fighting through the darkness, all is evil, still we must press on!" That intro gets me pumped every time. I think Lunar was the first RPG I ever finished: my Dad had borrowed it from a coworker, I wouldn't ow a copy until the PSX rerelease.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Hint for PS2 - some items have magical properties when you use them in battle... i.e. casting buffs on your characters or healing them... this is really helpful in preserving resources for the long dungeons. Also don't be afraid to map out the dungeons and Hinas your ass out of there if you are running low on health. The main route through the dungeon isn't necessarily the longest.

Well I got a PS2 guide from someone on GAF awhile back, and although i've heard it can be misleading at times, I might just roll with that. Definitely making maps for Shining in the Darkness.

I still wish they would drop hints about party members and not just hope you stop by your house.

I expected that sellers stuff to sell for over cost but that is just crazy. Not looking forward to the games that I have watched from him.

I hear ya. Most of them are in really good condition but DAMN. His offer on combined worldwide shipping is pretty nice though.

The combined shipping thing would be nice if I thought I would be able to win anything. I don't think I've ever won a single game from a seller that looked like they were selling off a collection of well maintained games right in a row. Since several of his game that I am watching are already pushing the max I would pay and they still have a day left I don't have high hopes here either.

I like your setup. It's very clean looking with the white shelves.

Did somebody make a YouTube video for castle of illusion?

Looks like it was just a bidding war. I expect the same for anything that person is listing. Seems there is a bunch of the same resellers bidding on a lot of it along with some low rep, but not new, users.

Altered Beast from same seller sold for over $50 for instance, to what looks like the same person.
World of Illusion for $70 with same people bidded on it
And Quackshot for $68, again same people bidded.

There is more, but the point is that these are all sub $20 games going for crazy.

it's like a scheme where a dummy account belonging to the seller drives up the bids, and the seller cancels the fake winner to accept the highest legit bid?

Don't they have safeguards against that kind of thing? Or at least some way to let consumers report suspicious activity.

Never bought a damn thing on eBay.

As long as stupid stuff like this doesn't get taken as the serious price of these games, just let the person eat it.
We all know Pricecharting is going to take it deathly seriously, and somebody's going to take Pricecharting relatively seriously as well.

I should've nabbed that while it was still cheap.

You know it's only just dawned on me how good the headphone output on the MD 1 really is. I never really used it on my Asian MD as it sounded shit, i suspect the caps were duff My new VA5 Japanese MD 1 the sound is awesome, Bass is ridiculous. I was using the obvious showcase SOR 2 to test it and it sounded awesome. I think i will use in all the time now going forward.

It takes more then just one dummy account to overbid by as much as his auctions are going for. Like all the games I linked sold for 2x and sometimes 3x even the high going rate of those games. You need at least 2 bidders to drive a price up, and the bid history on those games show more then that bidding. I really have no idea what is going on with his auctions, like maybe he advertised them somewhere or something.

Almost all of his games are wildly overvalued as far as auctions go.

I mean, I got most of his stuff cib in a quarter of some of those prices, less than a month ago. I mean 87$ for Zero Tolerance? Even if it's sealed? It's a 15$ game when it's CiB and a perfect condition.

I think it's likely real.

Ebay is just awful for browsing these days, so you get pockets of bidding wars like this. You can't just browse 'Genesis games' properly anymore. And the default search result is 'best match' which preferences commercial sellers.

As a seller as a whole, he's gained the attention of a bunch of potentially noobish buyers. As such, they looked at his other listings too, and bid on them, without checking sold listings for comparison.

I see it with Yamatoku, the huge Japanese seller. Games that sell for $10 getting into bidding wars and going for $50. He likely also turns up at the top of 'Best Match' (a vile default search).

And it's basically just because eBay sucks so much that people don't know how to find comparisons.

This lucky-ass seller gets a whole bunch of cash. All because ebay's obsessed with becoming Amazon and only preferencing large commercial sellers over regular people selling.

Dat 2.1 system connected to Genesis? You'll never want to go back.

It can't be just that. There are people with thousands of rep bidding the high values as well, something that I normally attribute to a reseller pushing prices up, but this is to a crazy extent. I guess it doesn't really matter to me anymore since everything I wanted that he was selling has passed outside the range I would pay, but it is still weird.

Well, it could be shilling too. Report the seller.

This one's at $277 so far.
Would it be worse if he was selling a copy of Pier Solar? Either way, I continue watching with one eyebrow fully up...

EDIT: WTF, he sold a brand new copy of Stormlord at $255. A brand new Japanese copy can be had easily around $10...

Yeah, Yamatoku's great, I've bought quite a bit from him as well. You just need to know the value of the games you're bidding on, so that you stop when you hit that point, and don't keep going and overpay and keep price inflation from going up even more.

I agree that "Best Match" is horrible, though. Never use it!

Not strictly just Genesis, but man i love weird controllers for gaming systems. Can't wait to see how accurate the "Batter Up" controller is.

Also i like Time Gal.

I'm just trying to ignore his listings and hope that they don't have much of an effect of future stuff. Most of it probably will not, with games that have tons of listings, but then there is things like the boxed Ristar he is selling that will probably set the new baseline for that since people don't sell boxed Ristars often. Shitsux.
