Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Yes. The Megadrive outputs RGB natively, there is no need to mess with it if you can exploit it. Mods adding S-video, Component or HDMI (gasp) can reduce the picture quality and should only be considered by people who can't use RGB in any form.
Alright. I thought there had to be a drawback of some kind, or else why would people do complicated hardware mods? Good to know that I'm good. And it really does look good.

And I recently got my first 6 button pad, which further increased my enjoyment of these games. I wish I knew about this stuff when I was a kid!

This is very likely what's happening. The same bidder won another auction for which I was the second-highest bidder, then over the weekend, I got a "second chance" offer from the seller to buy the game at my bid price.

Yikes. That's so shady. I hope you report them for that kind of behavior if true.

So it's basically soldering wires in place of capacitors? No trickery like pin lifting?

I'm considering doing one too but I've heard it would render the RCA Audio out on the Mega CD useless.

I've been in a Genesis collecting high recently. I'm hunting for some good shumps. I currently have the following: Thunder Force 2, Thunder Force 3, Lightening Force, Steel Empire, Gaiares, and Bio Hazard Battle. I just ordered Wings of Wor and Vapor Trial from eBay recently. Any recommendations from anyone?

Good choices. Check out Air Buster and Whip Rush.

Get TF3 to complete that sandwich.

Speaking of Technosoft, Elemental Master is another Must-Have.

I do have Thunder Force III, CIB actually. I can see that my sentence structure was lacking lol. I've been eyeing Sol-Deace and Air Buster for a while so I'll see if I can find those locally before getting them online.

No, no pin lifting, just need to unsolder approx 6 caps and 3 snd resistors.

I cant confirm the Mega CD issue, but the MegaAmp does have wires for MegaCD (labeled SCDL and SCDR) and 32x so that suggests to me that it should work as usual

I'll recommend Insector-X, because it's grabbed me well enough to put some fairly serious time into!

Fantastic design in graphics & gameplay, and a great soundtrack to boot. The stages themselves can be fairly brutal, with unusual enemy patterns and movement. Enemies command the field a good deal more with their presence rather than with a hail of bullets, moreso than any other shooter in my recent memory.
The bosses are visually impressive, but rather simple compared to the trials cleared to get in front of them.

It's hard to describe exactly I've liked it so, but it's a really nice sum of its parts and I've enjoyed that a great lot.
I'd also endorse Battle Mania for similar reasons in a heartbeat, but it's significantly more expensive/harder to get.

I like Fire Shark as well, but thats most of the big hitters.

MUSHA is an obvious omission, and Eliminate Down is very expensive but worth playing if you can somehow get a decent deal.

There are lots of Toaplan ports and while you probably don't need to own every single one, most of 'em are a good time. I'm partial to Twin Cobra but Truxton seems to be the most popular one right now.
I lied, it's Zero Wing, it's always Zero Wing

It's not a shmup exactly, but Mercs is always a good choice, and the new mode they added for the home port is great and just as good as the main game, If only they'd kept the two-player option!

Man I just found out there's an 11-disc anniversary soundtrack for OutRun that came out in 2007.

I don't think there's a pressing need to have literally two dozen renditions of Magical Sound Shower in your life, but I guess it couldn't hurt.

Last time I read about this you had to employ special trickery to get the sound out of the RCA, like either solder SCDR/L and plug a dummy Jack in the Mega-CD line-in, or straight direct the AV Audio out to the same line-in, à la Megadrive 1.

For this reason I'm considering adding a TRS connector at the back of my MD2 to get audio out. Even without an MCD it would be good to use with an external amp and get rid of all buzzing. Plus the MD2 already has a hole of the right in the back! (Do we even know what's the original purpose of it?)

M.U.S.H.A seems to be pretty good. There's a copy at a local retro store on display. I played it and I'm such ass in it. I'll look into Fire Shark, Truxton & Insector X as well.

Eliminate Down I think goes for about $500, yikes.

I remember considering buying it at the time but passed. I do have a the original GMO vinyl LP release of the Outrun soundtrack from 1986 complete with the sheet music though, and I really love it.

Finding late about stuff like this is the most depressing thing. You get excited in a news without a date, before realising it has been sold out everywhere for years and that you won't likely ever have it.

I myself would settle for a Monster World OST, also released in 2007.

I don't think I would have ever bought it, considering that it had an MSRP of about $130 when it was new. As much as I dig Sega racing BGM, I'm not breaking the bank for it.

So a guy at work is trying to sell his Genesis, and he offered it to me for $50. It comes with the console, 2 controllers, some kind of box / entertainment center thing that was made for the Genesis and 8 games:

Sonic
Sonic 2
Sonic 3D Blast
Columns
Quad Challenge
Ms. Pacman
Joe Montana Football
The Pagemaster

Obviously the games are all worthless, but is it a good deal overall?

Is it is a Model 1, 2 or 3 that your co-worker is selling?

It should be a good deal as long as the games come with boxes and manuals and are in good condition. If not, it would depend on the specific Genesis model, the condition it's in, and the accessories you get.

Model 1. As far as condition goes, I'm not sure. All I know is that it works and the picture he showed me of it looked fine. Games are not in great condition. A lot of wear on the labels, some have stickers from rental places. No boxes or manuals. This is owned by a guy who owned it as a kid, but doesn't really care about video games so I'm sure these have just been sitting in a box for years.

Better sound quality than other models.
There are model 1s with no HD that have the same quality, you just have to look for ones with a blocked ex port in the back, the completely removed ones are the Model 1s you want to avoid.

I may be getting a CD model 1 unit to go with my Genesis model 1 and 32x.

Does anyone have experience with retro game cave's Trio adapters? I'm wondering if I get a Trio will it be safe to use if the 32X isn't hooked up.

I have one for my Model 1, CD Model 1, and 32X combo and it works great. The only irritating thing is that the plug has a blue light on it. I have never tried it without the 32X, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Just to be safe you should probably just toss out the 32x. The trash is it's home.

I have a Trio too that I'm using in Europe with an simple adapter, without a 32X. Works fine.
Well, the adapter they sent me was trash and I had to buy another one, but I never got to tell them.

The model 1 CD I'm looking to buy been refurbished, with gears and belts replaced.

Are there other potential problems I should be aware of?

But they don't support HD graphics :(

Anyone familiar with a game called Crossfire? It's a strange cross between a Commando-style overhead run'n'gun, and a shmup, made by some super obscure company called Kyugo (whom I've never heard of before).

It's actually really fun, points for having a renamed version of the F-14 Tomcat and E-2 Hawkeye as an enemy (I worked at Northrop Grumman for years, including a lot of E-2 related work). The overhead stages are interesting since you can jump (with some really strange and goofy animation) to fire at enemies above you), and there are parts where you get to play as a huge helicopter in a zoomed-in shmup mode where you fire on the baddies as you descend toward the ground. The variety in the game is good and the music is nice as well. Also quite challenging in the run 'n gun parts.

People will be very familiar with it with its original name.

It's Super Airwolf.
