Also a jap/eng-switch and no tmss, and an overclock-mod, anybody have experiences with that?

^no 50/60hz but yeah, had bapho do all those other mods on my exact same kind've unit...it's the cadillac of gennys, love it

That is great to hear! Do you use the overclock-functions? I havent really read up on it, it was just offered me for the same price, so i included it, but dont know to much about it. More steady framerates with some games I guess?

Happy almost Birthday dude!

I always wondered what it was like being a Saturn owner back then, Must have been an interesting experience.

I've almost always owned many of the different systems each hardware cycle (although I didn't get a PC till 2000). I got my Master System in 88 for Xmas. In 1990 I had a paper route and bought both my Genesis and NES (I actually had a Genny before a NES, though many of my friends had NESes and I'd played the core mainstream games (Mario, Zelda).

91 I got my SNES for XMas, 92 got Sega CD for XMas. bought my own TurboDuo in 95 with the one check I got from dishwashing at Olive Garden (that job sucked, I quit after a week). I already mentioned my Saturn. Bought myself my PS1 in March 96 with tax returns and part of a check. Got an N64 for XMas in 96. Bought myself the Dreamcast and PS2 on their respective day one days. Bought myself a Game Cube early 2002 with tax returns. Got an XBox in 2002 for my birthday...and so on. I go over this to describe that my gaming what pretty much a constant stream switching between systems.

Basically what this meant...as a Saturn owner, I played the major Saturn releases for genres I liked as opposed to some of the lesser known PS1 games i might have played instead.

For example, as an RPG fan, i never played the Suikoden games back in the day (I've played it more recently as its my gf's favorite series). I also never attempted Beyond the Beyond. I also ignored a number of the PS1 action games that I might have played. Instead I was playing Mystaria, Shining Wisdom, Dark Savior, Dragon Force, Legend of Oasis, ect...

During this period I was going to college for a lot of the 5th generation and the early 6th generation(1996-2001). I was working a part-time job, a full time job during the summers, and getting financial aid in the US before tuition got ridiculous (my first year at a 2 year center in the UW system) was $950 per semester, and my last semester cost about $1600 at UW-Whitewater (a full 4year university). At this point basic financial aid was about $7500 a year if you have at least 60 credits. My point is i had plenty of money to maintain my video game habit, and slit between the multiple systems.

Also, thanks...i turn 40 this year ;)

^damn you played way better RPGs than beyond the beyond though

yeah, most demo videos show sonic 2 with the game not slowing down when you lose your rings...it's funny, it's almost weird to me not seeing that happen haha

Cool! And there should be no risk involved I guess?

far as i know no, i wanna say you're not dramatically overclocking it so there's no real concern for heat issues...i understand the mod's been out for some time now, so if it would've caused something i think we'd know

Yes...yes I did.

Many of my friends only had a PS1, and a couple of them played Beyond the Beyond. I know what I "missed." ;)

I should also point out I was still plucking away at 16-bit games during the early days for the Saturn/PS1. Like I mentioned, literally a month and a half before getting a Saturn I purchased Chrono Trigger and Lunar II. Lunar II took about 26 hours to play though
and then the epilogue
. Chrono trigger took about 35 hours on my first play through. I was also filling out my TG-16 library at this point, so Cosmic Fantasy 2, Dragon Slayer, Ys III, Cadash, ect...

I played a lot of the lesser known Genesis/Saturn/TG-16/Dreamcast games (I've always been a Sega fan, so Sega's sytems always took priority), but I missed a number of the lesser know PS1 games...but not all of them. I played both Alundra and Alundra 2, for example (Great and mediocre respectively).

On Topic, I've considered overclocking one of my Genesis systems, just haven't motivated myself to make the attempt at it.

i can imagine this was true - like, even if id've had a Saturn then, i absolutely would've needed a PSX
prolly would've played multi-plats on the saturn mostly but still

I think I could have survived with Saturn + PC.

Thing is Saturn wasn't really advertised so I wouldn't be aware of a lot of its titles. I just need the arcade ports, though.

Yeah I think that makes sense. Probably wont use it a ton anyways though. And that Sonic 2 slowdown to me is so iconic that its more like a feature now, definitely dont want to get rid of that :)

yeah, the sonic slomo is a feature now, it's the dev saying you fucked up so much we have to make you see it in slow motion

IIRC, OCing your Genesis/MD means no [S/M]ega CD for you. Not sure about the 32X, but the crosstalk between the base console and the CD add-on requires the stock timings. For reasons.

The smart modder installs a switch between clocks, especially since a lot of games break at the wrong clock speeds.

haha yeah, i always kinda took it that way too
god, it felt like forever in those underground mine levels

yeah, ive honestly never seen it without a switch, that'd be crazy

what do you mean? i leave my OC switch off and play sega-CD all the time...never really tried it with it on, but prolly for the better that i don't

You get a lot of crap in that thread, but I just wanted to say GREAT work organizing this. Always fun to get the gaf-opinion!

Yeah, it's making me not want to do another. Why not list everything? You counted wrong! That's not how you handle ties. I explained why I did what I did the way I did it. Oh well. Most seem happy with it and thanks!

I still like the idea of it and honestly, Some games are higher & lower than I would have thought. Still interesting to see.

I am mentally incapable of ranking things by number since I can never sincerely say that I would prefer one thing over the other 100% of the time, so I don't participate in list voting. It also seldom ever generates any worthwhile discussion. I just view top lists as one of the lowest forms of reader bait for journalists struggling with coming up with decent material, since it so easily garners heated comments by appealing to the reader's yearning for validation and sense of self-importance.

It also doesn't help that a lot of it is apples-to-oranges comparisons.

Okay, so I have to decide between a game like Rolo to the Rescue and Thunder Force IV. If I had to be as impartial as possible, TF4 is technically the better game by far... but what game do I want to play? My favorite genre tends to be platformers, while I've never put in the time to get good at and have fun with most shmups, and I've definitely put in a lot of time into Rolo as a kid, such that I've got much nostalgia for it, so I'd probably give it the nod... but is that fair to such a well-crafted example of the genre as TF4, even if the genre isn't to my taste?

This can go back-and-forth for a while.

But we're not journalists, were video game fans and IMHO I think it's interesting gauging opinions that are not based on click bait articles, opinion pieces or total sales numbers.

Never played Leynos. Loved Valken though so will one of these days.

The top games list surprisingly came out quite well.

This is, of course, a great point, but I still find it worthwhile to try and think about stuff like this, as it forces me to really reflect on what design decisions in a game I really like. And while you will never get an "objectively" ranked list, you might get a better understanding of games itself, thus making it worthwhile imo.

They're really going after nostalgia with the physical release of the Leynos remake.

I need to get this. Is the ps4 import-friendly?

Agree, I think the list ended up pretty well. The Mega Drive have too many great games for not some of them to be snubbed anyways.

eh...it'd bother me if it wasn't par for the course

as a hip hop fan, these lists are like the grammy's

I was just thinking about this and I remembered a music press article listing the 50 best bass solos, and not a single funk or jazz act was mentioned. How professional journalism can be so insanely dismissive of such a significant part of the culture is a sad yet fascinating social phenomenom.

for real? i mean...that's embarrassing, but oddly comforting given how the classic gaming scene sleeps on sega, NEC, SNK etc etc i guess

Where were you dude???o_O

I'm consumed by my PC right now. It turns out my 8 year old PC with a 3 year old gfx card can run quite a few games heavily modded and super sampled. There's a huge performance boost on some games now that I can enable DX11 in Windows 10 too. Classic 3D games from the PS1, PS2, and PS3 era that were ported to PC look marvelous!

Posted this on the result board, but Games Sack's latest video on " Games that aren't as bad as you think" has Altered Beast as the first game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_nMiV5B7XU

I think Altered Beast is pretty mediocre. Not good, not bad, just kinda repetitive and boring.

My first home port of Altered Beast was the spectrum version, which was an amazing effort considering the hardware. Although obviously much closer, the Megadrive version was definitely a big disappointment in comparison.

Still, on the bright side, it's easy to turn it into...ALL-TURD Beast. Heh.

Playing those PS games like that is pretty sweet, even I do it sometimes.

Just bought a new Genesis!
Congrats!

I think Altered Beast is pretty bad.
I played it a few months ago and it didn't age well.

I'm mostly talking about PC versions of games from those respective eras. Silent Hill 2, THPS2, Mass Effect, etc... I would play games through emulators, but I need a good scanline filter for PS1. Those jittery textures need to be hidden IMO.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah that's true. Heck I would say the Kingdom Hearts games look great emulated, but that's another discussion entirely.=p

You know what? I did some tinkering in PSXR... and I found a really happy setting. Silent Hill 1 @ 1280x960. This means no wide screen hack but the scanlines and the overall PQ is superb! Holly shit! This is the best!

Altered Beast was a clunky ugly game on the arcade, was cut down severely on Mega Drive and is missing all the semi-cool flashy stuff, and has aged like a steak left out in the sun.

Stupid game is still a bit of trashy fun though.
