Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Altered Beast has its place in history, but does not really have any reason to be re-visited now. Its very ok, nothing fundamentally wrong with it, just really by-the-books and boring.

The Gameplay is stiff and awkward. Some people really love it & some despise it. I fall in the middle. Cool looking console box art when it was packed in, but I always felt a better game could have been packed in that year.

There have been worse pack-ins. Like Keith Courage.

Everyone hating on Altered Beast has not embraced their spirit animal.

I know, they just don't

Altered Beast is far from the worst Genesis game, like it's no Dark Castle or Sword of Sodan or Slaughter Sport or Rise if the Robots, but it's nothing special and didn't age well at all really.

Hello guys, does anyone know where i can find ready-to-print scans of Mega Drive cart labels? I'm looking specifically for Castlevania The New Generation and Zool.

I think Altered Beast is pretty bad.

i mean, it served its purpose as a sort've tech demo in the day - coming off the NES, i remember being a kid & thinking those sprites looked huge & impressive. you totally got that vibe from the boss battles in Sword of Vermillion too, and in that example i thought the game itself was solid enough that i didn't mind the gimmick.

sometimes that's the case (SC IV), sometimes the game itself feels built around said gimmick (Pilotwings, Axelay). but yeah, if we're being honest i don't revisit many of those early genesis arcade ones - Space Harrier II, Super Thunder Blade etc, all serviceable at the time but for me, it was Moonwalker & Phantasy Star II that hooked me

I played through Altered Beast again recently. Yeah, it kinda sucks now but I still had some fun with it. It's also really short. Plus "Welcome to your doom!" is classic.

Alright, you mentioned your love for this game before. Explain! Checking every area for children just burns me out on this game.

man as an MJ fan i was all over this, and the midis were just amazing - i feel like the badass smooth criminal video wasn't even that old yet and BAM the game starts and you're playin it!

ive actually played it enough to mostly remember where the kids are, but looking about is half the fun - especially when you realize that nearly every level from 2-1 (i wanna say?) on, if you rescue the right kid first, you can trigger cyber-micheal, the deathbot! i just can't tire of it, and ive still never had a chance to play the coin-op one either...just like ESWAT.

Yup could have released the Genesisified soundtrack in stores outside japan, and still made money.

god, love this song - was so bummed about Thriller but this was a nice save for me, still love this track today cause of the game's use of it
also! finally playing v 1.01 or whichever with the Thriller dance in it on my mega everdrive was like the first thing i did with it, haha

Eh, I always thought the arcade version had better FM synth.

oh wow, i mean this was gonna be a given but this sounds fantastic
need to hear the rest of the game with it

That's cool! I guess if you knew where most of the kids were it would be a little more enjoyable. I wasn't haten though, I was just curious.

ah its cool, ive gotten that question a few times - if id've not grown up at that time/been such an MJ fan i prolly woudln't have it anywhere near a top 10/20 list, haha

Sonic 1 has the most sales, but if your not counting pack-ins & iirc it was Aladdin. That movie and game was huge back then.

I always thought it was Sonic 2, but I think that was actually Sega's best selling game.

This sounds right. Excluding pack-ins I think it goes Aladdin, NBA Jam and then Mortal Kombat II.

yeah, was gonna say Sonic 2 right off the bat but Aladdin is a likely contender too - based on every single garage sale ive ever been to, NBA Jam (so good) and MK2 sound like they're high up there as well, heh

really wish Sonic 3/K would've put up nearly those kinda numbers, too many missed out on the series' peak

S2 starts out strong but falls off a cliff by Metropolis Zone imo.
It's the worst stage in the game but I did like some of the stages after that plus it actually did have the hardest finale stage compared to the other Genesis Sonic games since you had no rings.

Plus dat Sky Chase Zone music!!!

Thoughts on the upcoming (when?) Genesis component cable?

Get a Scart RGB to Component box, it's probably cheaper and definitely more versatile, for an identical result.

RGB converted to Component and used on a SD CRT with Component gives a great picture, identical to what europeans experienced with Scart on their TV. It's the way to go if you can't be bothered to hunt for a PVM.

Assuming the quality is the same, which its close from the screens they posted. I would prefer to run just one cable, than have a scart cable to component converter box with audio extractor and then have to power it all. If I could simplify the mess of wires I have I'm happy, price pending.
