This goes out to all of my 17,5% slower Europeans and Australians (plus NZ I guess)
Done some testing on my Genesis I bought this summer, I used to just have a PAL Mega Drive up until then. Thought I'd share for those wondering if they should get a Genesis to replace their Mega Drive. Turns out it's a much easier affair than I thought. Both my models are the "High Definition" ones (there are some newer model 1 ones that need avoiding due to a cheaper sound chip, but check the net for comprehensive forum chats about that matter). If sound isn't an issue then the Genesis 2's are going dirt cheap.
Here's what I found out:
-The Mega Drive power cable works fine on the Genesis. External power supplies are awesome in this way. My old power cable felt like it was doing a nuclear meltdown of heat before this anyhow so I just replaced it prior to the whole purchase, there are many ebayers selling these for the classic Euro and UK plugs.
-My PAL Power Base Converter can be used in the Genesis and seemingly all PAL region bought Master System games run and at proper 60hz to boot!
-Older Mega Drive titles work straight up on the Genesis*** Sonic 1 and 2 run at correct 60hz speed etc. Newer titles like Sonic 3 has a region lock (as does Streets of Rage 2 and Virtua Racing), but here's the kicker: Put S3 into S&K PAL release and it works fine on the Genesis at the correct speed too.
So if you're a PAL Mega Drive owner on the fence, not into chipping or soldering, and don't want to have to rebuild you entire library*** or fuss with electrical step down converters then just get a cheap Genesis console from the US. All the controllers work fine and the Light Phaser too!
And yeah this is probably old news for most here, but I just wanted to share.
EDIT: ***Bahh, seems my testing was done a bit quick. There's a comprehensive list of MD/Genesis titles that don't work outside of their region
