WTF>?

Republicans are spineless.

I'm sure he's right.

Does the president realize GOP used a maneuver with a 50-vote threshold on health care last night, not 60?

No because he's a dumbass.

God, he is so fucking stupid.

Donald J. Trump‏ @realDonaldTrump

...Even though parts of healthcare could pass at 51, some really good things need 60. So many great future bills & budgets need 60 votes....

He seems shook.

"You're telling me everything else needs even more votes?"

If only there were a way to get 60 through compromise and bipartisanship.

It's like Trump lives in an alternate universe.

It's almost like he's been a trust fund baby his entire life and grew up with a skewed view on what the real world actually is. It's almost like he doesn't actually relate to the people who voted for him, and doesn't actually care about them at all.

That is the sound of Trump realizing he has to work with democrats on some issues. What an idiot.

Lauding McCain for this vote is like praising Tea Party members who voted against replacement bills because they didn't go far enough in stripping healthcare rights. McCain voted in favour of far more harsh repeal bills. That puts to rest any argument based on morals or principles.

Correct

I believe John when he says he wants to get back to bipartisan bills and his vote was to achieve that. Dude regularly votes ways I don't like, but has helped draft loads of bipartisan bills.

I didn't rush to judge him for coming back to work because I had hope.

One last time he was a hero again. That may be it, but today Trump is really pissed off so credit where it is due.

It probably won't last, but today it feels like the checks and balances work and I can just enjoy the Twin Peaks Fest.

What I find most interesting about this whole thing with McCain is that they literally seemed to delay the vote to try and persuade him to vote yes on it. Apparently Trump called him, Pence and others talked to him on the floor, ect. They put a shit ton of pressure on him and he still voted no.

I don't think hes a freaking hero for it or anything but that kind of pressure from your own party is hard to stand up against so for that well done McCain.

I just think it's tasteless that some people in this thread are still expressing some hostility towards McCain. IMO the attitude should be more on the lines of embracing McCain regardless of his votes in the past. Why would other republicans switch over when they still get hate from "our" side? McCain should be rewarded with respect so even more republicans are encouraged to switch over. Let's face it, McCain likely upset people in his own base/lost a lot of support. WE should be the new support

He literally voted for the worst version of the health care bill. He is not getting any credit from me.

Damn...some of you guys are trying really hard to still hate on McCain. Just take the L and embrace him for making the right decision and breaking away from what he's known for (being a puppet). Reward him so maybe other senators on the republican side will follow

Seriously it's almost embarrassing and not really better than what the hard right do

Nah.. because he voted yes on the actual GOP healthcare plan... I can say glad he voted no here but I don't have to embrace him

Get used to having a short term memory. We need a lot of people who voted for and with Trump to vote against him now, next year and in 2020. So let's be forgiving of their history and let's show them praise when they vote the right way, because otherwise they might not.

Their history? It was like 3 days ago.

Good for McCain for finally doing the right thing, whatever the motivation.

This will probably change in a New York minute.

Seeing Chuck Schumer wave off his fellow Democrats from celebrating after McCain cast his NO vote was baller as fuck. And its most likely the right-call in that situation.

It's like if a pack of cheetahs had some gazelles cornered and right as they were about to eat them one of the cheetahs let the gazelles free because the rest of the cheetahs wanted to make gazelle steak and this one just wanted a big juicy gazelle burger, and then after the gazelles were free they praised the maverick cheetah for being a hero.

You can be glad that McCain voted the way he did without thinking he's a progressive hero.

There have been more people in this thread complaining about the left glorifying Republicans than there have been posters glorifying McCain, and it's not been close.
I don't have a particular problem with giving McCain credit for this vote.

I have a specific problem with Unknown Soldier glorifying McCain and being extremely eager to stan for McCain, and smearing others on the side while he's at it, when he has ridiculously petty hatred for Hillary.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!

A lot of us watched it unfold in real-time last night. I nearly vomited, choking on the fears of my future as an independent customer of healthcare, no less also thinking about friends and family.

Never again though. It was torture. We the people should not be put under such duress out of spite and politicking. I don't expect McCain really fears the GOP or Trump even close to what Americans felt last night, not nearly to the level many of us did.

Absolutely. Cheering and whooping failed bills is a great way to undermine whatever bipartisan option you're trying to offer, not least with constituents.

This was my assumption. McCain took a bullet for Moderate Republicans. He had the ability to get away with something like this without major political repercussions because a) he's a respected senator with a lot of clout, and b) he's currently dealing with a health crisis so attacking him would be viewed as unseemly

Mod Republicans are doing victory laps in their heads. They avoid the ire of Trump, but don't have to reap the political consequences of passing this bill. It's the best outcome for them given the current situation.

McCain doing this makes me happy as an AZ resident. I always thought of him as a good, thoughtful person despite harboring the ridiculous GOP agenda lately

I'm glad he came back to his old form

he would of been a decent president in his younger years (as long as palin wasn't involved)

We are all relieved that McCain did the right thing. Relieved and grateful, but this isn't a fucking game. These decisions should NEVER be about dramatic theatrics or portending to curtail principles for personal vendettas or spite.

Demonizing GAF members for having understandably justifiable fears for their future and the future of their loved ones spiraling into a potential hopeless and dark future dealing was understandable. McCain did the right thing, but have some perspective and its natural the reactions of heightened emotions are at play.

The forum has shown an outcry of support for McCain since the vote, stop with the demand for vindication. The GOP held American lives captive, demonize them, not the victims.

This is so on point.

And most people would have folded. The spine can come out once in awhile which is more than I can say about most other republicans out there

Totally, cant urge for a return to decorum and then whoop and holler in the middle of a session, no matter how relieving a moment it was. Schumer was absolutely right to settle the tone.

It's kind of a myth that the best things are the result of bipartisanship. More often than not when it happens, it's because some special interest managed to buy out all of Congress.

The Telecommunications Act of 1996 passed 414-16, 91-5.
The Patriot Act passed 357-66, 98-1.
The Iraq War authorization passed 297-133, 77-23.
An Amendment for the 2006 spending bill (H.R. 3058, which eventually passed 405-18, 93-1) which would've stripped the Bridge to Nowhere and diverted the funds to Hurricane Katrina relief was defeated 15-82.
The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act that eventually caused a global recession? Final version passed 362-57, 90-8.

When they work together, Congress overwhelmingly votes for monopoly, waste, war, and corruption. I'm not reassured by bipartisanship. When both sides agree on something, it's pants-shitting time.

I dunno, I just really think it's pathetic McCain is seemingly getting all the credit (besides you know, democrats and the people), who was happy playing these games for so long, and not GOP women like Susan Collins and Murkowiski, with their unwavering fuck no's.

This is how I see it as well. Yeah McCain finally grew a spine and voted sensibly. Still, it's just one good deed out of all the bullshit he has voted for or spewed for the past decade or so. For all we know, his intentions for voting no was purely on saving his skin than thinking about all parties.

Collins and Murkowski deserves a lot more credit than McCain.

No arguments here. But right now bipartisan is preferable to GOP partisan politics even if less than ideal.
