It isn't that they can get close, but it's frustrating when Democrats propose the reasonable solution, and then have to compromise from there, rather than proposing something visionary and negotiating down to the reasonable.

alternately, it could be that they have to negotiate down to the sub-reasonable solution anyway because lol the GOP acting in good faith without insane amounts of public pressure

I think this can be understood while the general idea that a possible bipartisan bill should be based on it's merits and not whether it's single payer or bust.

FYI ... the GOP had a public option in a version of the ACA and the blue dog Dems stripped it out.



This is kinda what I was thinking. Maybe a repeal of the medical device take as a concession. If that's possible we should take it too.

The Blue Dogs did not kill the public option. The public option was included in the bill that passed the house. Joe Lieberman killed the public option. So did electing a GOP senator in Massachusetts which is what forced the house to accept the Senate bill

Bernie passed her the baton through Our Revolution, so yes, she is. Stronger champion for single-payer than whatever Manchurian Candidate the DNC throws up after donor huddles in the Hamptons (*cough*Kamala*cough*).

Of course not, just like the GOP doesn't ask or listen to what their base actually says outside of the most vocal minority. That doesn't mean "government-run" doesn't have a bad connotation in the United States. We were basically anti-government for most of the Cold War because we equated government control to socialism or communism.

What I'm getting at is far too many people in this thread think DNC is going to actually push single-payer with is clearly not going to happen. At best ACA get's propped back up and stabilized without the fear of Trump killing funding outright. Better would be some actual improvements to the ACA. Single-payer is off the table until large swaths of the nation publicly ask for it. And no, I don't just mean through polling numbers.

Guys, most Democrats won't actively push for a single-payer system at this point in time because they believe the majority of Americans aren't fine with that idea.

the overwhelming majority of their base supports either an expansion of government involvement in health care or an outright move to single-payer, so the Democratic Party is probably moving in that direction sooner rather than later

that does not, however, mean it's getting passed any time soon, let alone here. as you note, the most that's gonna realistically happen is stabilization (and possibly codification of CSR apportionments into law)

Unless that means getting Republicans to not undermine Obamacare for once in their fucking lives, or actually pushing for something much better (public option, medicare for all, etc..), then Democrats best be telling them to fuck right off.
