Shadow of Mordor deserves more attention. Come in and be hyped with me.

The horror, a game getting a "decent" score in reviews! Because anything below 8.5 is utter garbage and review scores indicate the quality of a game, right?

Game looks very enjoyable. Given that we've seen so much footage of it, the only thing that could be its downfall is if it's very repetitive and shallow. But it still looks fun, and it tries some unique things that are truly next gen, more so than other games that are getting a lot more hype here.

Mid 7 is a perfectly fine score for me anyway. A lot of games that get 9/10 scores from today's gaming press are extremely unimaginative and boring to me anyway.
Come on bro.

7/10 in this day and age means the game is mediocre.

Sure it may not sound right but that's how it has been for years.

Without any other emergent systems in play, I can't help but figure the nemesis system will be boring and predictable.

What gives you the impression that there are no other emergent systems? We've already seen roaming animals that act in a way similar to the Skyrim example you described, and each orc seems to have distinct personalities that react to parts of the environment (beasts, fire, etc.) in different ways.

Well, I would generally agree, except I really don't count enemies scaling in level and generating random bounty missions as "changing the world" in a meaningful way.
If anything, it makes me fear that properly designed content is going to take a backseat compared to this "procedural" stuff.

I guess I don't understand then what you consider a meaningful change in the world, if NPCs personal to your playthrough that grow and react to your actions are uninteresting.

I'm pretty excited. Too be honest I'm super glad this and Dragon Age are not landing on the same day so that I can fully focus on both of them as they release.

It's looking really good, pushing the release date up a week and the Dragon Age delay are great news for the game. Will definitely put more attention in this now

To you maybe. A lot of my favorite games are 7/10s. A review score is in no way indication of a game's quality.

Is God Hand a 3/10 game?

Yup! This was great news for me as well. As both of them were day 1 for me, but it's hard when they're due the same day.

I bet "You're supposed to be dead!" is going to get old fast.
Depends on how often you die.

I like the sound of the Nemesis system. It does seem to add replayability, hopefully. I like the idea of sending a death threat to an Orc chief just to make killing him more difficult but in turn earns you an award. I like that kind of play.

The Nemesis system sounds awesome to me, if they keep it at an equal focus with the other aspects of the game, and if it truly feels like something new and fresh. The fact that the system can't be run properly on last gen bodes well for its depth and complexity.

I'm interested, but Monolith's name simply doesn't carry the same weight as it did when they were making PC exclusives. The transition to multiplatform development was hard on them.

It does look pretty great. Shame it couldn't have released a bit earlier and I would have been all over it at full price, as it is, I'll probably pick it up early next year.

They've done a relatively poor job of selling the Nemesis System. If I've fought an orc before he will remember me. Okay, why is that compelling? It just seems like innovation for the sake of innovation.

Can't really get excited for this. Mostly because of the developer. We need an RPG set in First Age. Imagine how epic that can be.

While I'm not surprised to learn you have the same stick up your butt as the Tolkien estate, it may shock you to learn they are not the ultimate authority on how his work should be interpreted.
THIS

When an author publishes his work he is essentially pushing his work into public. Of course it is of value what the author himself thought when writing his work, but it can be freely interpreted by anyone.
A lot of people for example draw direct comparisons between LOTR's plot and the WW2. Tolkien stated that his work is not supposed to be an interpretation of WW2, but he was obviously influenced by that time as the plot has obvious parallels.

Is God Hand a 3/10 game?

It is by definition and indication of an games quality, but it is an subjective opinion that is absolutely correct and it might not be in line with your own subjective opinion (such as mine, and I think God Hand is an bad game).

It would be amazeballs. The actions in LOTR pale in comparison to the shit that goes down in the earlier ages. The quest to destroy the One Ring is just the tip of the ice burg.

I'll be hyped with you bro

Hopefully this will be the best console LOTRO game since LOTRO: The third age. (for me)

Fuck me I absolutely loved that game.

Oh no, not innovation. Anything but that...

If you set an orc on fire, and he doesn't die, then he'll be burnt and pissed off the next time you meet him. At the very least it will add some flavour to encounters, and make the world seem slightly more like a living place.

Dude it's monolith come on now.

Cause it's kinda of cool, makes the world a bit more dynamic and less static.

Surely you can imagine a scenario in which you carelessly attack an orc that is stronger than anticipated and ends up killing you, which allows him to level up and become even more powerful. Imagine preparing a build that exploits his weaknesses while putting in motion a plan to have one of his lieutenants betray him, culminating in a second fight where he taunts you while wounded, but you're prepared for him, and ends with you decapitating your rival's astonished face as you even the score. How is that sort of personalized story not compelling?

I'm at a weird position where I absolutely love the developer's body of work and the source material but can't get excited one bit for the game.

I read the OP and watched some of the Polygon video and it look pretty unappealing. The combat looks quite amateurish and I'm 100% certain that the small breaks in gameplay to introduce these special enemies will get old really fast. The Nemesis system sounds good in theory but will be pretty useless with the kind of combat system they have in place.

At least the environments look pretty good and the wraith powers seem fun.

What Nemesis adds to game does not really seem proportional to the amount of hype Nemesis gets. They bring it up extensively in every interview and video segment as if it's this big game changer when it's more like "Oh, that's kind of interesting.".

I suppose part of the problem is I just don't see myself developing any kind of intense personal rivalry with Generic Orc #798. He'll remember me from a previous encounter, but to me he's just some orc. You get stuck in M Bison Syndrome:
"The day I graced your orc village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday."

They think it's a differentiator and seems like quite a few people agree with that. I haven't seen anything like it before.

Yeah it's the biggest draw for me when it comes to this game otherwise it would be another generic game for me, it'll be interesting to see what they learn from it and how much they refine it if the game is successful enough to warrant a sequel...I also hope it's so good other games borrow the idea because honestly making each combat situation interesting is what lacks in alot of games...combat that effects story scenarios besides dialog situations is great.

Someone hasn't played NOLF, Condemned, AVP2, or FEAR.

I'm currently building up the courage to watch one of the newer preview videos.. hopefully it changes my fears for the game.

Someone hasn't played NOLF, Condemned, AVP2, or FEAR.

Or their most recent works, Gotham City: Imposters and Guardians of Middle-Earth.

Of the games you listed, the most recent one was listed six years ago.

I might get it just because it's comes out at the right time, enough time after TLOU and before Far Cry 4 and Dragon Age.

As a non-Tolkien type, this actually makes me want to become a Tolkien type.

Looks actually amazing, what Arkham Asylum was for Superhero games, this could be for LOTR games.

Allowed Tolkien the opportunity? He wrote the friggin' books. It's his friggin' setting. He gave the story the themes it had. How could I allow Tolkien the opportunity to do that which he already did? I recognize the themes and tone that Tolkien imbued his novels with, and am simply asking that other writers using the Middle Earth setting try and follow these themes and tone.

Does pretending to be stupid usually win you arguments? My point was you are judging the themes in Tolkien's writing based on entire works. With this game you are prejudging the themes based on a tiny fraction of the entire work. You can't say one way or another whether this game is in accordance with your interpretation of Tolkien because you literally have no access to make such a judgement. And all your current claims willfully misconstrue everything that has been shown in an effort to justify your (admitted) prejudice against any games in this setting. If anything in this thread is making Tolkien spin in his grave I wager it's your lack of jurisprudence.

YES MORE ATTENTION I agree so much.

Dat nemesis system. Just look at any 40-minutes long e3 demo and see how it's different everytime, that's what sold me.

I'm all in on this game, I have been hyped since the Game Informer reveal and initial trailers. I've kept away from recent footage but hearing all the positive impressions really pleases me.

Also I had no idea it got brought forward a week, I literally could not be happier, thanks for alerting me to this OP, bring on Late Sept / Early October :D Now it won't be fighting for my time with Alien Isolation.

games are expensive in Australia T_T

man price match that stuff
or just use dungeon crawl/ ozgameshop

This game has looked really good in most of the previews I've seen.. I think the focus on single player mode only has given it the 'Wolfenstein' kind of subdued marketing.

The whole LoTR context/story + nemesis + engaging combat has me interested.

Haha yeah I usually do, but a lot of the time EB have editions that I want and I'm kind of stuck paying retail (Evil Within, Destiny and Alien Isolation for example). There are plenty of options for lower cost games though in Australia. Dick Smith has been great lately with near ozgameshop prices.
