ATLANTA, Ga. (NEXSTAR) — A video posted to Instagram shows Shaquille O’Neal paying for a man’s engagement ring at a Georgia jewelry store.

In the video, Shaq passes his personal credit card to the salesman. After buying the ring, Shaq shakes the hand of the man who will soon be popping the question with a brand-new engagement ring.

After the video went viral, Shaq talked about it on TNT on Tuesday night.

“You know what happened yesterday? I was in Zales looking for some loop earrings… and I saw a guy come in. He was so shy… and he was asking “How much do I owe?” Shaq said. “So I asked them, how much is the ring?”

“I’m just trying to make people smile… that’s all,” Shaq said.

Some blue check on twitter who was a woman got snarky about this saying "really hes got all that money and hes shopping at a mall jewelry store". I replied with the fact he has a line there and he also has a shoe line in walmart, hes not out selling $300 white t shirts like kanye. She quickly deleted. I cant believe he was being "shamed" for such a thing.

This is a great story, he says he does this all the time and doesnt want credit. Such a nice guy

Also shows she didn’t watch the entire video. Should have screen shot the picture and hit her up with her bad take. Lol

This is not a good foundation for that marriage.
The whole idea is that you waste your money on this ring, to signal to the woman and her family that you have means.

Now the only signal is that Shaq is richer than this guy. Does Shaq now get to impregnate her?

These traditions have practical utility, best not ignore that.

You could also argue that rather than put himself in a hole that adds stress to his marriage that Shaq gave him a head start so that the guy could focus on being a good supportive husband instead of slamming himself looking for work to pay off a ring.

I mean, I would expect nothing less to have people paint this as a 'bad thing' because you know, the world is a shit place, but still. you're really reaching for straws to suggest that this is bad, you don't don't anything about this guy other than he was in the store, trying to do the right thing to find out how much he had left to pay for the ring.

Maybe this is a viral marketing campaign for his new line of engagement rings....called "Prima Nocta" :)

I love Shaq.

But as a man, you're supposed to be the one who pays for the engagement ring, I wouldn't let anybody else pay for it because then the gesture loses it's meaning.

Paul Walker used to do this, but also ask them not to tell the press. It wasn't until after his death a bunch of stories came out about him just randomly paying for things and helping folks out; seems like he targeted (in a nice way) people who were nurses or in the military and just paid for engagement rings, cars, and meals for them.

Not sure I would want someone else to pay off something like that? It is a nice gesture for sure but IMO takes a little something out of it.

That's like me giving someone a nickel. It's bad to judge but I've heard too many shakey things about the guy to praise him for pinching off a little nugget and getting some publicity.

He does this all the time, and never asks for publicity for it.

Alternate take: His ring is technically worth more now since a celebrity(Shaq) bought it, and he can tell his potential wife this crazy story to give way more meaning behind the ring and it's importance.

Nice of him.

People arguing that this defeats the purpose of the ring should be aware that it is a stupid tradition anyway. So it would make a meaningless debt into some profit.

Exactly. But you can't be going before the eyes of God looking like a fuckin peasant with only a $1000 ring, he'll literally appear and laugh at you and then probably fuck your girl. Gotta drop a few stacks on that ring.

The girl's family will also look at you as a poor imitation of a human being. I mean, what kind of disgraceful trash cannot get into at least $10,000 ring to show them you mean business?

The whole marriage industry is a scam. No different than my country's tradition of quinceañera (girl's coming of age at 15 years old).

I think this is a very nice gesture but it'd be tough to accept. Buying an engagement ring for a lot of guys is a yearslong process and it's a point of pride to be able to buy one for your lady.

I think I would graciously accept, but take the money I saved and put it in a house savings fund or use it to pay off other debt, so it's more like Shaq contributed to that than to buy the ring
