Shin Godzilla - Trailer 2 (New Japanese Godzilla Movie)

That's what makes Shin Godzilla work. There is never that silly "omg are they going to survive" stuff where characters are under false threat and have to avoid shit to escape a disaster. There's no hero carrying a secret weapon who has to sneak around Godzilla's back to launch it into his ass. Everything is worked out in office buildings and the only threat to the characters is the same threat facing everyone else - that if they cannot stop Godzilla, at some point either they die as collateral damage or the entire country tanks because you can't run a country and economy with a giant monster destroying your economic capital. Lol!

I think
Japanese American senator (?)
sorta counts :P

with that said I am not seeing an evangelion in it

Pretty good. This isn't anything like Edwards' borefest where there are a bunch of melodramatic "common people" witnessing Godzilla from a civilian perspective. There are no unlikely heroes or young soldiers or lonely housewives or whatever. Every single character in the film is a government official of some sort and the entire human element is about official bureaucratic response to Godzilla as a national threat and the impacts it has on Japan on a socio-political level, and what Japan can do on a military level to respond. It's heavily dramatized and there are some exaggerated personalities, but by and large it's West Wing via Evangelion.

Like, if we HAVE to compare it to Godzilla 2014, just imagine what the movie would be like if the entire film focused on an international task force being set up to deal with Godzilla with Cranston in charge, and that's the entire narrative. No soldier boy trying to get home to his family, no government cover up, just a bunch of professionals and politicians trying to make the best of a bad situation.

Oh thank god.

This follows my suspicions. Thank you for confirming, and for justifying my dislike for 2014.

Even though I absolutely love Godzilla I have only ever watched a single Godzilla movie which was the 1998 version. Being 13 I thought it was awesome but I know it gets crapped on now and I'm sure rightfully so. I should be going tomorrow and I'm pretty excited.

Got my tickets for tomorrow night, can't wait. Ended up having the whole day free with classes being cancelled for Columbus Day, so I'll be marathoning Godzilla films all day.

Just landed from a plane from Japan where i got to see the movie.

I'm not into Godzilla/Kaiju movies at all, gave it a shot only because it's Hideaki Anno, and holy shit this movie is good. Like, Top 10 personal movies of the year good.

It's Anno in every single aspect, and it's probably the closest thing we'll ever get to a live action Eva adaptation.

And the big boy himself, there were a couple of scenes where i was frightened by him for the first time, ever.

I also loved, loved the balance between Gojira-related scenes and everything else, but i think this will not be the same for everyone.

I also liked the portrayal of the themes, even if some of them aren't anything new at all especially if you're in touch with japanese culture and history.

All in all i was very pleased, can't wait for my Godzilla/Eva fans friends to see it.

I'm pissed that Funimation mostly screwed over Wisconsin in terms of Shin Godzilla showings. Apparently Funimation thinks everybody lives in Milwaukee

Sounds like there's going to be a huge influx of people watching the movie this week. Yay, more people to talk about it with! :D

The closest theater to me screening this is more than 100 miles away. Dammit, Funimation, why did you have to be so damn cheap with distribution?

Ordered some tickets for a Saturday screening sometime last week. It's taking every fiber in my being to hold off until the weekend as I would normally race to the first showing, but I want to share the experience with my significant other and the closest theater would consume a six hour round trip. It's safe to remark that this latest installment will be one of the few moments in the history of the franchise where an auteur director operates the helm with undeniable gusto. I'm genuinely curious over whether Toho will continue with Anno's interpretation for the reboot effort or evoke another series of standalone efforts like the Millennium cycle.

got a ticket for tonight at the alamo. stoked

Same! I really hope it's good. My brother bought me tickets for my birthday to see it tomorrow with our dad and I not knowing that I was seeing it with my friends tonight. Pretty frightening to think about seeing a movie two nights in a row that you end up hating. :|

I loved it so much I watched it twice!

Just read the lyrics for "Who Will Know" from the Shin Godzilla soundtrack. I was not expecting it to be from
Godzilla's perspective, I get a slight chuckle from "A shaft of light is my only hope" line, considering what that meant for the whole city haha. I have to admit it's also something that relegates one of my gripes with the film, about how there is no real character in him but this certainly adds a tragic element to him.

Holy shit this movie you guys! Unanimous two thumbs up from a fully packed theater this evening. Even knowing spoilers and having seen some stuff beforehand this still really blew me away. I wouldn't expect the politics and stuff to be as compelling as it was and it's just generally well shot. Great movie, better than the 2014 movie easily and I'm even a big fan of that.
