Went for a second watch, so sad the iMAX showing is no more here ;; so had to settle with sitting closer to the screen.

Some scenes are just so beautiful to watch, and worth it hearing the soundtrack again.
I really have to compliment the translation work. The translation has some lines that are pretty badass compared to the Japanese lines and really enhances some of the action scenes. Good job to the translation!

My favourite line:
この機を逃すな! 無人在来線爆弾、全車投入!
Don't miss this chance! Unmanned old line train bombs, all go to Godzilla!

Just watched 2014 US Godzilla.

What a fuckin turd of a film. Felt like it was a shitty disaster movie with a couple scenes of some lame CG monsters. Somehow, even the Matthew Broderick movie was way better.

I'm looking forward to this new one though.

Edit: is this in US theaters now?

Is this the movie thread? Saw it in IMAX.

Really good, even though I like the 2014 film this has better humans. With that said people might be turned off like in 2014, as like that, this film follows the first film's steps. With that said I still prefer Legend Goji's look than this silly goof.

Though the symbolism is really odd.
So he represents the government's red tape?

Got some serious Evangelion vibes from it, especially at the military attacking Godzilla - almost shot-for-shot replicated from Eva on some.

I recently rewatched this during my Godzilla movie marathon and no way is the movie better than the 2014 one. Tons of bad cheesy moments from characters/plot and the creature was not Godzilla. Utter disrespect for Toho's creation.

The 2014 movie was not perfect by any means, but at least it was a Godzilla movie and far from the worst one.

I haven't watched that old one in a while. It could be just terrible, and I'm sure it is.. and yet, I'm sure I'd enjoy a corny, bad movie more than a boring, uninspired disaster movie.

I could see why people would say it's boring given how many times it cuts away from the action until the final battle. But I would say it's pretty inspired in terms of how the world and populace might react if giant monsters suddenly appeared. Lots of great shots that demonstrate the scale of the monsters as well as the destruction caused. It's more interesting if you're a Godzilla fan.

Shin Godzilla supposedly does the disaster angle as well, perhaps moreso than the 2014 film.

They seem to have added more theatres. Just found out its playing near me.

Sep 9th (today) was the official day that tickets were supposed to go on sale. Some theatres just jumped the gun.

I've already got two sets of tickets. One set to see it with my girlfriend on a weekday soon after release and more to see it with the guys a few days later on Saturday. Pumped.

Judging by the trailers, Shin Godzilla seems like a soft remake of the original film

that's what literally is the original Godzilla film is

if you found 2014 boring you will find this one too, since it's the same in that regard

The 98 film isn't even a horrible movie. It's a competent disaster film for the time with some humor. It's just not a Godzilla film.

This is as close to live action eva from anno as we're going to get, huh?

So excited, c'mon Anno!

Have you heard the soundtrack? Because it gets even closer

Tickets are bought. Man in heaven this is going to be glorious.

It's so weird this movie is going to be called Shin Godzilla in the US instead of Godzilla Resurgence.

Sadly no theaters in my area are currently planning on showing the movie but I'm looking forward to the Blu Ray release.

maybe that means you guys would get a different localization/subs, or heck maybe a dub!

Shin Godzilla is a much better name.

Like how they use the Godzilla march from the first movie.

It's used in the actual movie too.

Independendendendnys Day 2 kind of ruined the Resurgence subtitle for movies.

I'll disagree until I see the new one.

The original is at least low budget looking black and white scifi monster movie, with a goofy dub, and I have nostalgia for all of that kind stuff. The sequels just get silly.

2014 is a generic disaster movie following a specific boring dude and his friends, and sometimes bland CG shows up for awhile. It's more a remake of The Broderick film if anything.

I found the CG beefosauris look of 2014 Godzilla to be boring.. shin godzilla looks more like the original, which is neat, but also rather bizarre. Plus, it's Japanese and directed by the Evangelion guy, is that right? These will be wildly different films, even if they are both supposed to be takes on the Original.

The 2014 film was alright but there was far too much cutting away for a big budget American reboot. Which was probably due to Edwards schtick from Monsters getting the best of him. That said I do like the design for that movie a lot better than Shins.

It's just that Godzilla should of been the main focus in the film, but most of the plot was driven by the MUTOs which made his role feel like a glorified cameo. In the 54 film, he was directly responsible for moving the plot forward and being the centerpiece of what the main characters had to deal with, even if he didn't have much screen time.

With Edwards being out of Godzilla 2 it will be interesting to see who takes the reigns of the franchise whenever it releases in 2019. It certainly will be a much different movie. .

I'd like to see them go all out this time. Have Giacchino as the composer as well. It's possible that Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah will all show up as well.

How's the humans?

Pretty good. This isn't anything like Edwards' borefest where there are a bunch of melodramatic "common people" witnessing Godzilla from a civilian perspective. There are no unlikely heroes or young soldiers or lonely housewives or whatever. Every single character in the film is a government official of some sort and the entire human element is about official bureaucratic response to Godzilla as a national threat and the impacts it has on Japan on a socio-political level, and what Japan can do on a military level to respond. It's heavily dramatized and there are some exaggerated personalities, but by and large it's West Wing via Evangelion.

Like, if we HAVE to compare it to Godzilla 2014, just imagine what the movie would be like if the entire film focused on an international task force being set up to deal with Godzilla with Cranston in charge, and that's the entire narrative. No soldier boy trying to get home to his family, no government cover up, just a bunch of professionals and politicians trying to make the best of a bad situation.

Yeah this, but there is an equivalent criticism I've read which I kinda agree on that the main character never really gets in danger unlike most of the other human protagonists in Godzilla, the closest he ever gets is just
looking at the hibernating Godzilla

That's what makes Shin Godzilla work. There is never that silly "omg are they going to survive" stuff where characters are under false threat and have to avoid shit to escape a disaster. There's no hero carrying a secret weapon who has to sneak around Godzilla's back to launch it into his ass. Everything is worked out in office buildings and the only threat to the characters is the same threat facing everyone else - that if they cannot stop Godzilla, at some point either they die as collateral damage or the entire country tanks because you can't run a country and economy with a giant monster destroying your economic capital. Lol!
