I think KOEI also knows something wrong

I have a feeling a game like this would have been better suited two to three years in PSP life cycle.

are you kidding? have you played a recent DW game?

Yes. I love them. But this looks putrid in comparison to the PS2 versions. I wonder how bad the fog and pop are in motion in the PSP version? What I meant is that 2nd and 3rd generation PSP titles will probably look much better so I'm guessing future Dynasty Warriors PSP games will end up looking much better.

Seriously, what's with all the 16bit dithering i've seen lately on PSP shots, most noticeable in fog/smoke and particle effects?
One of the strongest causes of dithering is the order in which the graphics are rendered. As each layer of a multi-pass effect like a multitexture or a translucent overlay of fog, heat haze, smoke, or other distortion is blended with the background, it is written out to a buffer which can lower the color depth. The color dithering then becomes compounded for multiple layers. This is a weakness of most current systems including PS2, GC, and Xbox too, and only the Dreamcast maintains full precision while blending by performing all operations internally first before writing out only once at the end.

How do you know that?
Dunno about Marc, but I am gonna go with the official spec for the screen here :P

Anyway, these shots are supposed to be frame grabs anyhow so screen has absolutely nothing to do with how they look. Whether the game runs in 16 or 24bit could have something to do with it though.
Although looking closely at how dithering looks I'd be more inclined to side with Cybamerc on this one, it looks a lot like screens that were saved as low color GIFs at one point and using some pretty bad quantization tool as well.

I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed when the PSP games don't look identical to PS2 games.

I think it's times we come to terms with this, together, as a forum. :D
