Yeah and the IOS gaming thread is a great place to discuss those games. Or the threads dedicated to specific IOS games. Having all threads about all PC's, laptops, tablets, smartphones, on gaming side would make things a cluster fuck imo.

Until there's a reinvention of what the phone is, I think the updates will get more and more unexciting/incremental.
If such a reinvention is there to be made.
I think it'll take new product to reinvigorate excitement and 'wow' factor in Apple announcements. Like their TV plans, or Apple Glasses or something like that.
The phone seems to be 'done'. Well...we'll see if iPhone 6 yields anything massive, but if not, I think we're at a stage where they're just adding perhaps increasingly thin layers of icing.

My god, there is actually hostility to the iPhone being recognised as a games platform, on a gaming forum, even still in 2012.
The iPhone plays games, that people buy from the Apple store, an exclusive closed marketplace that is enormously profitable and has redefined the games industry in some ways. It has platform exclusives. Publishers and developers make games specifically for the format.
If that's not enough for the thread to be worthy of existing in the Gaming Discussion section of NeoGAF, then there is clearly no convincing some people that a gaming platform with exclusive games is somehow something to do with gaming.

I just assumed that meant they were going from dual-core Cortex A9 to quad-core A9, and from dual-core graphics to quad (like what the A5X in the new iPad has now). Is there some other way they could've doubled the CPU/GPU performance? I kinda doubt they went to Cortex A15 CPU cores, although that would be freaking awesome.

Smartphones are starting to reach their peak in terms of fulfilling the needs for most of its users. At this point your just upgrading for better tech needed to play the Infinity Blades of the world and to make wireless internet leaps (3G to 4G, etc). The vast majority of apps have been been playable and usable since the iPhone 3.
I'll upgrade soon for 4G support but that's going to be the last time for a long while. We've reached the ceiling for hand based phones. The future will be something like google glass, which will open up a huge new market of apps involving augmented reality.

Don't worry about backseat modding so much, if the mods think the thread shouldn't be here, they'll move it.
Apple should just use some of their money to develop some games so these people don't have any excuse anymore.

Dunno the Windows 8 threads seem to specifically refer gaming performance with benchmarks and everything. Or seem to have notable people from the gaming industry talking about Windows 8.

I've been thinking about upgrading from my 3GS.
I dunno though. Not a lot of games that have come out of it for me outside of that initial honeymoon phase (although Battlehearts is awesome sauce). Maybe I'll just wait for 6 or something.

I have a 4S too. Use iOS 6 when it comes out. I downloaded the developer beta. The improvement is very noticeable. Love some of the new things they do in iOS6.
From 3GS to 5, it would be day-n-night difference.

The worst news out of all of this is the new connector, Lightning. One of the most anti-consumer moves Apple could have done.

It has a higher PPI (326 vs. 306) than my 4.8 inches 720p Galaxy S3. And honestly, 4.8 is a little too much for a phone imo. It's hard to use with one hand and it's freakin huge in my pockets.

Yeah 720p would've made absolutely no sense for iPhone 5. They would've either had to make the phone bigger, or else increase the pixel density from its already absurdly high PPI - and thereby ruin its ability to run existing 960x640 at their native size/resolution/aspect ratio.
