Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

The Gradius PSP set in excellent. If memory serves, it was done by M2. Definitely should not be missed...and it has Gaiden.

I actually have Salamander Portable for PSP, and I fucking can't stand it. I'm sorry, but the PSP is such a unergonomic, flimsy, cheap piece of shit, it makes me hate playing any game on it (PSP-2000). The slow refresh rate on that garbage LCD makes the bullets impossible to see, and therefore renders the game unplayable. I have the TV-out cable somewhere, but I'd still have to play the game on a PSP, instead of a real video game system. I'd like to have either the Saturn or PSX version of Gradius Deluxe Pack. No real major differences between the two?

M2 did some of those Konami PSP compilations but I don't think they did Gradius. M2 definitely did Salamander and Twinbee but I think Gradius/Parodius may have been erroneously credited to them. I don't have them on hand so I can't check for myself.

The major issue with the Gradius PSP compilation is that it uses streamed music instead of emulation so the tracks don't always play/line up correctly, but I'm pretty sure the games play well enough.

Makes sense...the menus are kinda wierd on that set. Still, I really like all of those collections. Just good bang for the buck and good ports. Never noticed the music as I've only played the 16-bit and 8-bit ports of the calssic Gradius games. Plus, it was my first introduction to Gaiden...probably my favorite in the series.

And, yeah, if M2 does not list it on their site then they did not do it.

If could grab a PSP Go, throw some custom firmware on it, copy your UMD to it (literally a drag and drop process), use the TV out and hook up a PS3 controller to it (feature only supported on the Go).

Not ideal, and costly, but it is possible.

Once the component cable takes care of the refresh rate problems it holds up fine. The Dpad works well unless you are stuck using the circlepad thing for some reason. Responsive and nice is how its always felt to me. To each their own though with shmupping and fighting games. Sometimes you just gotta have a particular tool or you can't get comfortable. I'm lost on some games without a stick.

Right, that's what I'm getting at. I really can't play arcade games on a d-pad any more. I've used an arcade stick for so long, and unlearned everything about a d-pad, my hands actually cramp up when I try to use one. If I could somehow tether a real controller to a PSP it might be playable, but at that point the amount of prep work is not worth more than the $$$ eBay sellers are asking for a PSX disc. At this point in my life I'd rather pay for my problems to go away.

Gradius Collection on PSP is vita compatible but you need to DL it to your PS3 then transf. it to your Vita.
Good port IMO but man do I suck at this series XD.

Did they ever knock the price down on this game for PSP? I always wanted a copy but never saw it hit a decent price.

Nope it's not on sale atm, I just gave in and used the 10% discount code to get it.
If I can figure out how to play it vertically I might switch to that lol.

TV-out of the PSP is a real drag cause you still have to use the system. It is mildly more fun on the Go with a Dualshock 3 but that setup (though cool) is kinda cumbersome and silly to jump through...especially if you are sending it through a frammeister

Half measures all of that, i'm sorry.
It's all such a drag to play a game you like, while in this gen, notorious for being a gen of ports and remasters, they just re-release fairly new but popular games ignoring some others that even though they are niche, they deserve to be preserved.
STGs are going through a phase where they are fairly popular on Steam. I just hope that intrigues the publishers enough to consider the platform as profitable and port some games there.

Yea that's my setup, and its such a bitch to set up I rarely ever bother.

Here's my latest addition to the shmup collection. Game is super fun, and much better than Sengeki Strikers which I also have.

I'm really hoping cave decides to test the waters with Steam soon. Looking at their iOS and Android sales, they aren't doing too hot.

Even Sky Force, with its HUGE success on the mobile markets, is releasing on Steam.

On a side note: I never, in a million years, would have thought Poland would develop the most successful Shmup in existance.

I agree. Steam has become the platform for many niche genres and it's to the publishers and devolopers interest if they embrace it.
Now if they do it, it's up to them.

Cave Shooting Collection Kan Final (We promise): Digital Steam Edition

Droooool.....

Yes please.

I guess, at this point with a severely toned-down Cave (as in, there's a real chance we won't see more non-mobile original games), the question is how they would price their games on Steam. I'd pay full retail price for a PC port of their 2013 Saidaioujou port, as would a lot of their very tiny dedicated Western fan base (and maybe a chunk of their much larger Japanese fanbase if Cave did the Treasure thing and explained Steam to them, lol), but I'm pretty sure most Steam users (the potential new audience) would balk at that.

Releasing their 90's games for $15 a pop or something would probably be acceptable for everyone, though, assuming Cave's willing to spend the time learning the ropes of international PC releases.

Yeah that's definitely a concern. People who aren't fans or familiar with the original retail prices would laugh at $30 pricetags attached to "short" arcade games.

Edit: it's also hard for me to see Cave selling them for sub-$20 prices.

They should though. We are not talking about me, you and a handful of people. The majority out there won't pay full price for a STG.
The only acceptable price would be 19.99 for the newer games and lower for the older.
If Cave, or any other pub for that matter, has half a brain, they will know they will have returns by expanding their userbase enormously.

Espgaluda 2 and Dodonpachi Resurrection are both 7.99 on the Play store. I don't think they have a problem selling their games at a lower price if there are people ready to snatch their games ups. It would definitely reach a wider audience.

As for Cave learning the ropes, they wouldn't have to if they got a decent porting/publishing company.

H2 Interactive (they've gotten better after their Raiden III release), Nyu Media, AGM Playism, or Degica would do fine.

Unless they release the games at $5, the majority of people will "wait for the Steam sale" anyway...

Fans of the genre will buy these games day one. People who wait on Steam sales would probably have never bothered to buy the game to begin with. These games will never run out of print and will continue to sell for years to come. Shmups are pretty much timeless games that age well with time.

Cave knew that, from the perspective of the $60-or-$120-per-game dudes, the mobile versions of their games are so drastically different that the thought of that audience simply opting for the iOS Espgaluda 2 over the 360 Espgaluda 2 was never a worry. And the ports... I'm don't know that Cave would trust any of those developers to port their games to PC and maintain the slowdown accuracy necessary to be satisfied with the port. I think that's why they turned to M2 in the first place to help with their 360 releases, after the amount of work Deathsmiles took. Maybe M2 could help on the PC porting side, though they don't know anything about PC distribution, and there's obviously a question of cost to Cave there.

The only console port they've released at a cheaper price has been Guwange (a 1998 game in late 2010), which was a very good port and sold at $10, and I remember them not being very happy with the sales. I'm guessing it did them far less damage than G.Rev's release of Strania (with which G.Rev decided to try selling their latest game for $10 internationally instead of $60-$70 to Japan and, sure enough, about the same number of people bought the game as their last $60-$70 Japan only release), but all in all I can't blame the dudes for being suspicious about how much they'd earn selling their games for dirt cheap.

...at least, how much they'd earn with new arcade-to-home ports, which might be a thing of the past for Cave. So if Cave is just going to be a mobile development house that wants to earn some more money from their back catalog, I think they'd do well to start releasing some of their earliest games on Steam and seeing where it gets them. Assuming they don't see the porting cost as too much of a risk (I'd imagine it would be cheaper to accurately port these games than their SH3 games).

They aren't doing good at all in mobile market. AT ALL. They should at least take the risk. They gotta find some way to make money. I just find it kind of silly that one guy is able to make better business moves than an entire development team. Crimzon Clover sold more than projected on PC, yet Cave is just sitting there. Waiting for the old dirt nap.

They should look at games like Sky Force and Strikers 1945-2 and see what model they use to make Shmups so successful on the platform. They have to build the game from the ground up to have it do well in mobile. But like I said before, even iDream is bringing their game to Steam.

I did the same thing but for the Gradius Collection. Gaiden looks dope, it's been forever since I played one. Too bad we didn't get the Parodius Collection though. :(

Just got these three in the mail from eBay today:

$_57.JPG

Got them altogether for $60, $20 per game plus free shipping, which was a pretty great price on Gradius Gaiden's part. Can't wait to get into it, been wanting it for a while and the price point for the bundle hit the sweet spot.

How is Raystorm compared to Layer Section / Galactic Attack?

Also yeah, I need to sit down with Gaiden too.

Alright, pulled the trigger on some Gradii this morning. Let's see what happens. Got the Deluxe Pack and III & IV coming. What's up with Gaiden? I don't think I ever heard of it.

Just purchased the new Galaxy Note 4 because I'm sick of doing high use operations on my tiny iPhone at this point. It's just too small to enjoy web browsing and other smartphone like tasks.

Can't wait to buy the Cave shooters on the Google Play market and play them on a massive phone screen. I feel like it will encourage me to play them on the go more than I do with my iPhone.

I tried to like playing Cave shooters on my phone, but they've made it too easy by allowing your ship to move as fast as your finger/stylus. It's just not the same :(

I'm not sure if its the right place to ask, but I think you guys are probably the ones that could help me decide. Is the heroes expansion for resogun good? I'm addicted to it at the moment, and wouldn't mind adding more content

I agree but I think it would be frustrating to play if they didn't make it like that. There's no substitute to playing the actual game but I still love the fact that you have some of the best games of the genre in your pocket.

You might be right. It's more of a novelty for me to have them on my phone, but I'm still glad I do!

Survival Mode is brilliant, it's incredibly intense and you don't have to put an hour aside for a run-through. It's Resogun distilled.

Yes! It adds 2 new modes: Demolition and Survival. Survival mode is beautiful and worth the price alone. If you think you're addicted now, wait till you play this.

I can't speak much about Demolition because I haven't played it nearly enough as Survival but I've enjoyed it as well.

Definitely worth every penny. Be on the lookout for the next DLC that should arrive early this year. Looks like they are adding a huge amount of things!

How is Raystorm compared to Layer Section / Galactic Attack?

Also yeah, I need to sit down with Gaiden too.

Layer Section / Galactic Attack is the better game on a technical level, but I have a soft spot for Raystorm. Taito worked miracles with those blocky PS1 polygons, and the soundtrack is dope ZUNTATA tunes.

RayCrisis is kind of a mess, though.

Every time Gradius Collection gets mentioned, I get excited and then remember that I can't download it on the Vita. At least presumably the Resogun DLC will be getting ported?

Ceramic Heart is a beautiful song, which I just discovered via the vocal version recently.

If I could somehow tether a real controller to a PSP it might be playable, but at that point the amount of prep work is not worth more than the $$$ eBay sellers are asking for a PSX disc.

But you can! The Playstation TV is basically just a Vita with PS3/PS4 controller support and HDMI out.

Just remember to manually set the PS TV to 720P as a lot of modern TVs lag when it outputs 1080i.

I just tried Super Galaxy Squadron and it supports POV switch input, so most 360 sticks should work now. It's a neat little game, I don't like that the standard shot can't kill the little ships at first, but after powering it up shit blows up real good in the later levels. Now all I want is an option to remap the buttons. LT/RT to activate Hyper is not very convenient.

Edit: I can't seem to move cursor on the ship select screen, though. Odd. And still no PS3 stick support. Booooo...

For that price it would be worth getting Under Defeat just for the awesome soundtrack alone! Under Defeat is really good though, it was one of the better shmups on the Dreamcast when it came out.
