Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

So what shmups are actually available to me if I only have a PS3?

I'm aware of all the shmup goodness on Wii VC.

PS3's library obviously doesn't hold a candle to 360's in this area, but it has some good ports.

Ketsui is the best game in the genre on the platform. Raiden IV and Mamorokun Curse are pretty good, too. There are some PS1 and PS2 releases on PSN, but I personally wouldn't play them on the PS3 due to the added lag.

Ketsui
Caladrius Blaze
Raiden IV
Mamorukun Curse
Under Defeat HD

And I'm pretty sure that's it for modern bullet-hell shmups (I own all of those save for Ketsui). There's some PS1 Classics like Shienryu and Sonic Wings Special, and a few other PSN things like R-Type Dimensions as well.

Anyone know if the NA version of Deathsmiles 360 works on a Japanese 360? Trying to find region info for anything that was released in the US is a nightmare. I figured since the LE is cheap I might get the US version to play instead of this Japanese version but it's not really worth it if it won't work.

There's also the Gundemonium games (a bundle for $15, might be cheaper on Steam) which I enjoy, obviously don't have the popularity of Cave or anything. hitogata Happa's my favorite if you only get one, very unique system where you buy ships (dolls) and in boss fights you're more limited by time/DPS than lives.

Play-Asia often have the information on their page, as far as I know that information is usually right. Deathsmiles US is supposedly region locked.

Those that have a Vita or PSP, some SNK minis and games are on sale, some of their shmups include
prehistoric Isle, the craziest shmup concept I've seen ever.

Wouldn't surprise me, Akai Katana certainly is. Didn't think to check Play Asia for the US version, yeah their region thing is pretty nice (though I got burned by trusting the initial PS TV listing)

I can personally confirm all versions of Deathsmiles are region locked to work only on the region they were released in.

yup. it's sort of a pain too. ended up just buying a jp platinum hits edition for cheap so I wouldn't have to swap back to my US 360 every time I wanted to play deathsmiles

Fired up the PS4, an update for Resogun started downloading, anyone know what this is about ?

It's a package full of awesome: challenges, feats and photomode. Next week it's the Defenders update: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-02-11-resogun-defenders-dlc-due-next-week

Bluh. Some of these games are cheaper (and more English) in NA but not really worth buying a second 360 for, or more importantly, swapping consoles. Why couldn't they have started on Xbone so they'd at least be region free...

Uh, what? You do realize Deathsmiles was released six years ago, right? How could it have been an Xbone game?

What shmups are worthwhile in the current SNK sale on PSN?

I already got Neo Geo Heroes, but there are also:

Last Resort (in SNK Arcade Classics)
Alpha Mission
Alpha Mission 2
Prehistoric Isle
Bermuda Triangle

I didn't realise Prehistoric Isle was on PSN. It says on the store it can only be played on PSP and PS3 as it's a Mini. Can it be played on Vita/PS4 at all?

Look my post above.
All SNK minis are vita compatible, at worst you'll need to transfer from PS3 to Vita.

Again everyone get Prehistoric Isle, it has dinosaurs that explode!

Ah, apologies... completely missed your post. For $1.49 in Australia, can't go wrong!

About women in gaming...you know i've noticed that side from the Vic Viper, most pilots are women. At least the games that show the pilot at some point anyway. Not just talking about modern shooters either.

Lots of women pilots in Compile's Aleste series of games.

Genesis shooters there's also Arrow Flash, Gleylancer, and more. I think it's attributed to the anime influence with women leads like Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell etc. Those were popular at the time, right?

I feel like Cave putting their games on the digital market place for 360 brings them a step closer at trying to bring dem shits over to dat Steam yo!

Are you referring to Guwange and Deathsmiles 2? those have been on the market place for a long time.

Galactic Attack, Pulstar, Thunder Force V, and I think one of the pilots in Darius is a woman too. But yeah, that might have something to do with it.

Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu
Akai Katana
Dodonpachi Saidaioujou
Mushihimesama
Muchi Muchi Pork! & Pink Sweets

Japanese store that is
So going back to this piece of news I never knew about... When did they make these available? I'm curious myself if they are considering steam releases...

it was just a day or so ago and they are download region locked/you need a VPN to download them.

I know it won't happen (especially due to the shift to M2), but I really wish they just focused on making a new STG instead of continually porting their backlog. doomed to be the next Treasure.

They are making a new STG...http://www.cave.co.jp/sp/mahouotome/

I think it's mobile though.

These Games on Demand releases have absolutely no bearing on future ports or Steam releases or anything else.

People keep telling me this, but I keep seeing releases that people would have never thought happen come to fruition. This shows that they are willing to put these game on a digital market and not try to limit these gems in some archaic tactile format.

yea, magical maiden will be mobile and I'm kind of scared it's actually going to be a hybrid dating sim tbh

kinda would like a new console or pcb based stg :/ but that would be way too good to be true.

I'd like to see an Akai Katana 2... That would look nice. I haven't played the game, but I've seen videos of it and it looks awesome.

Akai Katana seems to be the most unpopular of Cave's recent offerings, so a sequel to that game in particular seems spectacularly unlikely.

Really? Man I thought that game looked fantastic.
I did not like the scoring system or mechanics at all. Maybe it was too much for me, but I would like to think not since I'm such a huge Galuda fan...

I will agree though that it LOOKED amazing.

Akai Katana looks very attractive and has a great soundtrack, but I think a lot of players found the scoring system a bit confusing. The storyline is pretty grim too.

Definitely at least worth a try if you like bullet hell games though.

Origin's score system is garbage. Shin/Slash on the other hand is fucking amazing. One of my favorite Cave titles.

CAVE has never been married to a certain price point or a certain format, they've acquiesced on these supposed sticking points many times now.

The issue is that both their arcade and consumes games divisions have been gutted and they've allegedly lost many of their key personnel, and they've repeatedly stated that they will no longer be investing in or directly developing any more consumer ports of their own games.

I'm not saying that their games will never be ported anywhere else--they're still open to external licensing, so there are opportunities for other publishers/devs with ins at CAVE to license these games and port them to whichever platforms they like, provided they're willing to finance everything and handle the work themselves--but CAVE cannot and does not want to do these things on its own.
