Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Just checked out the Esp and DoDonPachi game on mobile... It makes me really want to buy a console to play them. Hopefully they get PC releases at some point, but I doubt it.

I wonder how well current releases like Crimzon Clover, Ikaruga, Astebreed, Danmaku Unlimited, and others have done on the platform. Other than Yotsubane being pleased, I really haven't heard anything else from anyone. I really want to see the genre thrive somewhere.

I put this in the CC OT, but it's in community now so I'll post here instead.

New DLC is set to be released in the coming months. It's for an OST by Gryzor87 who worked on Hydorah's soundtrack. Degica has also been pretty adamant about grabbing suggestions from System11 for Yotsubane. I don't know if anything will come to fruition for this game, but I'm sure he's looking for suggestions for his next game.

He should put some moe lolis in it.

What? No thanks. Having cute anime girls in games is fine from time to time but it gets annoying if every game does that. (I'm looking at you DDP Saidaioujou, I still love you, though)

Today I finally got my copy of Caladriu, but unfortunately for it, it will be on the back for a while until I'm done with GG Xrd.

Anyways, happy new years Shmup GAF. May your scores be high and your 1cc's plenty.

Not sure why I waited so long on Crimzon Clover World Ignition.
This game is absolutely amazing.

Also just picked up Revolver360
Might take a while to get used to the mechanics, but this is an impressive title.

For R360 it took me a long time to realize that I can HOLD the rotation button to do smooth rotations. I'd always just tap it. The game because a lot better for me after realizing that.

Cross-posting from another thread I posted in...I've gotten into Crimson Clover over the past few days and I fucking love it!

First game of 2015 down and it feels fucking awesome. Totally LTTP on this game. Just finished my first 1CC of the game on Novice Difficulty on Original Mode with the Type-1 ship. I was only on my 3rd attempt too! Holy shit was it intense though. I haven't attempted or done something like this in a long time. Got to the final form of the true final boss with one ship left and at one point I had nothing and he was locked in this relentless assault of bullets, but I pulled through. I'm pretty content with my run, but I'll definitely give the standard Arcade difficulty a shot to see how I fair. For now, I've seen the legit credits roll, so I consider the game "beaten".

I'm super stoked I pulled this off! Definitely hasn't been a shooter in a long time that's grabbed me like this.

The video runs at 60fps, but I didn't think YouTube was going to compress it to the point where 720p looks horrendous. I'll probably record at 1080p from now on.

My rule of thumb concerning this has always been that YouTube's compression is so bad, that every res is actually only as good as the resolution below it. So a 1080p video there would only look like what the 720p should have, and the 720p looks like what the 480p should, etc.

I knew I should have gone with 1080p. I might do a rerecording. Would Youtube allow me to edit the video with an updated video without changing the link? I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to Youtube and streaming.

Demo for new Platine Dispositif game, I guess it'll sold be at Comiket 87. Is there any way to get their games digitally yet, without waiting for Rockin' Android (and hoping they actually do it? They only have a few platine dispositif games that I know of)

What the hell is the name of this game it looks pretty good.

Yay, new high score in Raiden iv. Only made about 2/3 through 1-3, but I'm at 117 (out of probably <500) on the leaderboard. At least it's a move in the right direction.

What platform is that for? I've noticed it picked up a 360 port but that never seemed to come to EU/AU :/

My copy of Caladrius Blaze finally arrived today. Is there a good guide for this game anywhere? Also, can you somehow tone down the pervy stuff? I noticed an "Illust"(rations?) setting, but I'm not sure what it does.

A patch for Deathsmiles iOS that fixes issues with iOS 8 came down yesterday. Looks like someone at least left the lights on over there; I was getting worried that I would eventually not be able to play the game anymore.

Oh shit, had no idea it was even on PS3. It's on special for $15AU, itching now to try it with my Saturn USB pad.

PS3 I believe has the Raiden IV Overkill edition. That means it has Overkill mode where ships that are blowing up fall super slow and if you pump em full of bullets you get more medals but at the risk of staying still long enough to try and max your reward from them. That wasn't a part of the 360 version. It also has the MK II and Fairy ships that were DLC on the 360 in it plus two more missions.

Yeah, it's definitely the Overkill edition. I haven't played that mode yet, sticking to the Arcade mode until I clock that.

I decided to watch the Bullet Heaven review videos today. I watched 5 episodes and I almost never want to watch another one again. They score Redux: Dark Matters so much higher over other classics. Don't get me wrong, it's not a horrible game, but it's defnitely not a 4.75/5... which is a notch below Radiant Silvergun. The game literally throws nothing at you on normal until you get to a stage boss or until you get to the last stage which the game all of a sudden decides it's time for a freaking laser show. I just didn't find the game too impressive. The game does feel better on Veteran difficulty since you can't basically cheat your way to the end of a stage.

Yeah - kind of lost some respect for that show after that review. Wasn't that episode also sponsored by the dev? Or was that the Sturmwind episode? They did review the PC version I believe - which might be better than the craptastic DC version I bought.

It plays the same and it did seem like they were sponsors for that epis ode or later. They do thank them in the cresist in a few episodes I think. But what I don't get is Astebreed gets a 5, Old barebones Redux gets a 4.75, and Crimzon Clover gets a 4.5....

Redux literally has 2 modes. Vet or norm. There are no online scoreboards, no replay save, no alternate modes, and normal mode has almost no risks until stage 7. Something is wrong if one of the worst shmup players in the world (me) can 1CC a game on their second try.

Couple days late so I hope you see this, but here's an excellent guide on Caladrius (both the original and Blaze).

Has anyone played QP Shooting Dangerous on Steam? Looks like a pretty decent Touhou-like. And I'm already a fan of 100% Orange Juice so I like the characters.

I love this game :)
Can't wait.

I feel like I'm one of the VERY few that doesn't doesn't find the game to be anything above mediocre. I might just be the most vocal about it at least. I finally had to say something about the video:

I'm not saying this game is a bad game, but I don't understand where all the praise for it is coming from. To get the positive out of the way, the controls feel good and the music sounds great. One more positive thing to mention is that Veteran feels kind of like what should have been the game to begin with and maybe implemented the shield mechanics at a more minimal level without making the player feel practically invincible for stages 1-6. Aside from that, everything else I experienced was mostly lackluster. The sound effects are horrible and some are borderline annoying. The ship doesn't even have any sound whatsoever. There's no sound effects for it's weaponry outside of the annoying impact noises. Normal difficulty seemed like an afterthought. The absorption mechanic just breaks the game and almost feels like cheating since you feel like you're not in any danger until you get to the boss of each stage. Stage 7 is the only stage that felt like any thought was put into enemy attack patterns and the player having to actually dodge fire. All the bosses are uninspired. I 1 CC'd this on my first play through and I'm one of the most horrible shoot'em up players I've ever seen. The game is also BAREBONES compared to other indie/doujin entries on Steam that offer up training, settings, replays, online ranking, etc.All the basic stuff. The game just doesn't even come close to being in the top ranks for me. I guess my tastes are just super different.

I really don't see how they talk this game up as being good. The game is borderline bad.

Despite all the love Crimzon Clover gets here I just cannot get into it at all... Tiny hitboxes seem to be a good indicator that I won't enjoy a game, I've had way more fun with R-Type Final than Crimzon. I know my eyes feel much more relaxed when playing R-Type because I don't need to look at a post stamp sized area to precisely weave through bullet patterns. I tried comparing the hit box size to the fingernail on my pinky finger but it's not even a third of the width...

AFAIK there's no easy way to filter for the old direction of the shmup genre? I mean, there are loads of terms for the new style but I don'tthink the old style has any names beyond "shmup"? It's kinda similar to the MMS direction that modern FPSes are going into, difficult to filter for an old style one.

Describes the PS Vita in a nutshell...

Very generally speaking, you'll probably find more horizontal shooters that you can get into than vertical ones.

If visual size is a big part of the issue, though, maybe it would help a bit to rotate your monitor if you haven't tried that.

different strokes for different folks

and speaking of.. the 12th annual top 25 shmups vote went up today and you'll be able to see the difference in tastes between a lot of the users (there are some that don't like tiny hitboxes/bullet hell either).

During the stream they said it was half way there and that they had been working on it for 2 months already. So I would expect it in March or April.

Ctrl+F *searches for "Redux"* 0 out of 0 found.

Good.

@Dambrosi: Most likely within the next month or two.

@KDR: Usually you can filter out the tiny hitbox games by avoiding games in the "bullet hell" subgenre. I find the trick to bullet hell games is not to strain your eyes by looking at the hitbox too much, but rather looking upwards on the screen (towards the incoming bullets) and using the edges of your ship to keep track of your position.

I feel like I've asked before, but are any of the Touhou games any good? I've listened to remixes of the soundtracks for many years, but I never play the games haha.

So what's the consensus on controls for shmups? Joystick/Arcade stick or controller? I've heard several people recommend a stick for some shmups on the Dreamcast like Neo XYX, DoDonPachi, and Fast Striker just to name a few. Does anyone use a stick for Saturn and/or Genesis shmups? Is it that much better?

I prefer a stick having grown up playing in arcades - except for something like Gradius V, I play that better with a pad because of the analogue movement, and easier control of the multiples.

But yeah, stick for me if a game normally has digital controls.

It comes down to personal preference like you'd imagine. Some games like Soukyugurentai even support true analog control so some people might even prefer using analog sticks.
