Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Deserved win for Mushihimesama Futari.
I wish there was a home port of Daioujou I could play on my PAL machine. I only played that game once on an arcade machine and it was awesome.

It has ports on Xbox 360 (White/Black/X-Arrange) and PS2 (White/Death). Both would require you to import a console unfortunately (and the Xbox 360 port is probably difficult to find considering it was pulled after the code theft fiasco).

Had the code theft not taken place then perhaps Daioujou would have gotten a PS3 port like Ketsui eventually did. Sigh...

Ah! Akia Katana and Dodonpachi DaiFukKatsu 1.5 / Resurrection dropped off the top 25, I bet a few old timers will be quite happy with that result even though I liked them.

It will be interesting to see if Crimson Clover has any lasting appeal given it's similarities to the above 2 games.

Forgot there was a PS2 port. How's that one? I have a modded PS2.

It's fantastic, probably the closest a port has ever come to replicating an arcade game that ran on different hardware (though it actually leaves out the original hardware's sprite glitching that can occur). So good that the source code for it was stolen by the guys 5pb contracted to do the Xbox 360 port, as mentioned.

Only real downside to the PS2 port is that it doesn't have a Black Label mode, which is the particular variant of the game people seem to enjoy. Also, I'm not sure if it would run at the correct speed on a PAL PS2 - I don't know how running NTSC games work in your case.

That's no problem, it runs like any NTSC machine would do.
Looked it up, the game is surprisingly quite a bit cheaper than I thought it would be. Put it on my list.

And over at shmups we just posted the annual top 25 voting results.

http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=53159

Quick highlights:
Code:
01. Mushihimesama Futari / 1.5 / Black Label (ARC/360) 7.13 . . . . * * + ~ ~ + +
02. Battle Garegga (ARC/SAT) 7.09 + + * + + + - - - - -
03. DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou / Black Label (ARC/360/etc.) 6.29 * + + + + = = ~ = + +

Good list, though no Salamander/Life Force even though Gradius/Nemesis 1 was present makes me sad.

This week's Humble has the tale of alltynex trilogy (Kamui, Reflex, Alltynex Second) in the BTA. Currently $4.41. How are they?

The real news is Revolver 360 being part of the sale. Fucking bought.

Good stuff! BG is finally knocked off - not that it deserves it, but it's nice to see change once in a while.

Rayforce being in that list is a little shocking - especially beating out stuff like Thunderforce and Batsugun.

I like Thunderforce but putting any of them above Rayforce? Not sure about that.

Thunderforce (3 and 4) are pure horizontal shooter perfection. Rayforce is but a mere peon compared to the almighty Thunderforce.

Actually, I haven't played Rayforce (Layer Section) in quite a while - I guess I should pop it back in my Saturn and see why you guys are so delusional. :-)

I wonder if next year could be interesting too - although voting numbers were down on previous years, some of the older guys can't be bothered anymore which is a shame.

I put Rayforce down to the new generation of players 'discovering' it. It's been really interesting to me seeing some of them suddenly go nuts over titles the rest of us had known for decades.

Good to see Crimzon Clove making it into the top ten.

I hope CC comes to consoles one day - really need to check this out.

Rayforce never really hooked me, which is why I never put it on my list (I'm "soupbones" on Shumps btw).

Another thing I noticed: Ginga Force dropping off the list after only it's first year. Such a shame. - if we had a English translation of the game, I'm positive it would rank much higher. The lack of an in-game translation is a huge barrier for a game like this. One of the most interesting and addictive shooters I've played in a LONG time. Half the fun is outfitting your ship correctly for each level.

Finally got the chance to play Deathsmiles II (arcade) yesterday. I'm still sad we didn't get the game in Europe. It's rather ugly and somewhat easy (I played Giga Wing 2 after that, that was a different beast), but it's a lot of fun to play.

Doubt I'll ever get to own DaiOuJou. Sigh...
Guess I'll try to find it at an arcade some time..

Here's something interesting - an old (2010) interview with Ikeda, conducted by a westerner and published here in English for the first time:

http://gaming.moe/?p=757

The interviewer knows her stuff, unlike most other western interviews I've read that just wanted to know about Zero Wing. I found this part especially interesting:

So how did you eventually fall in with IGS and AMI?

Dodonpachi Daioujou was our first game with AMI. AMI is part of a larger company, IGS, located in Taiwan. They had acquired the license from us to make a new Dodonpachi game for their hardware. They wanted to import ESPrade, but that was a completely different sort of PCB, so they just got the license and made their own game – Dodonpachi II.

A lot of Cave fans don’t seem to care for Dodonpachi II.

As it turned out, Dodonpachi II performed extremely well. IGS sold it in Asia and then brought it to the Japanese market a few years later, where we first saw it. That was what convinced us to re-enter the arcade market.

Wait, re-enter? Did Cave quit arcades?

We were strongly considering it. We had reached a point where we were doing mostly contract work, people weren’t interested in publishing our stuff, and the risks for doing publishing ourselves were way too high. We planned to stop after Progear, which is why there were no new arcade games from us until DDP DOJ.

But then Dodonpachi II changed your minds.

After we saw how well it performed, we figured we could make our own new DDP installment and it could likely do just as well.

Thanks for the link. I had no idea about that DDP2 tidbit.

I have a feeling this is going to be negatory, but does anyone know if Cave shmups (or any shmups) on iOS are MFi-compatible? As in, they support controllers of some kind (whether MFi or iCade)?

I suspect Raiden Fighters Aces was, but it's been a while.

Nearly all of Cave's catalog predates MFI and they were not updated to use it to my knowledge.

Hey guys, I just bought Dodonpachi Daioujou for the PS2. I'm having trouble with what the intended resolution / aspect ratio is, how I should have it displayed on my screen. I'm playing on a widescreen CRT, horizontal. The PS2 sends a 16/9 signal but my TV can also force 4/3 (black bars on the side), and 4/3 cropped (top and bottom cut) if needed.

Out of curiosity I tried the Tate mode
and hurt my neck
. For some reason in Tate the 4/3 and 16:9 option have an opposite effect? When I select 16:9, the game window get squished on the sides (now up and down) to give an aspect that I measure as 4/3? And conversely, selecting 4/3 fills my widescreen completely without anything cut. I must say it looks the best when filling the screen.

Can you help me understand? What was the original presentation of the game in arcades? was it played on a widescreen display in Tate? Google doesn't really help here.

I have 2 copies of MMP for sale. Both sealed. I had intended to flip these to help afford the one I bought for myself, but I don't have the patience to wait for them to sell at a higher price. Looking to get what I paid plus shipping which would be about $78 shipped.

yeeesh how much work do i gotta do to unlock the fourth ship in Crimzon Clover? only at 38%! man...

To tell you the truth I remember taking a little bit. You just gotta do runs that give you a substantial amount of stars. Getting used to the scoring system really helps. That forth ship makes the game pretty easy... then you'll find yourself going back to the other ships for to 1CC and get top score. But damn.. the first time you use Type Z for a 1CC run, you feel like a damn boss.

I can't even 1cc the game on novice, lol. Although I did just try for the first time and made it to the endboss...

You don't even have to be able to 1CC you can rack up stars in the first 2 or 3 stages if you play your cards right with score multipliers and Double Break. Break, lock on. let loose, the double break for that 12.8x multiplier I believe. Then collect them stars. I haven't played in a while. Trying to wait for that new DLC to hit before going back.
