Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

How is this game for someone who is so trash in shmups that he could never 1CC them, but still enjoys flying a craft and blowing stuff up.

Honestly, regardless of your skill, it's worse than Crimzon Clover but seemingly solid.

FullBlast just released on WiiU, $4.99 launch price:

I might bite. Seems a bit slow and I don't see any weapons which worries me a bit but I'd enjoy a shmup on the U's offtv play

I think you'd have a lot of fun playing it for survival

My new NTSC-J X360 come over the weekend and I decided to finally sit down and start 1cc'ing all of my shmup backlog this year. I started with Mushihimesama HD and I just love everything about the game. The music, the presentation, STAGE 3 being the best stage in a Cave game. Just too good, worth every penny.

It really does rule. It was pretty eye-opening to boot up for the first time after trying the muddy PS2 port all those years ago. It's closer in quality to Futari than I expected and I might even like the original game's aesthetics more. Stage 3 is so wild.

Welp, finally bit the bullet and got a 360. SHMUPS HERE I COME.

Kinda sucks for now though, since it's a 4GB slim (latest model) so I can't really download anything. And I have two wireless controllers with no charging cables. And no games (and of course no Gamestop around here has a copy of Deathsmiles) Gah. But hey it was $50 so whatever.

Today's word for SHMUPS: perseverance

Welcome aboard!
You could just hook up some USB sticks you got laying around the house for now?

Mushihimesama HD Novice Ultra is surprisingly aweaome and mostly neglected. It starts off slow but ramps up so perfectly. Kinda comparable to original maniac. Yes Boss got me into it when we were doing a lil scoring comp (not many people were on the leaderboards haha). Make sure to snag the dodonpachi daifukkatsu black label physical release for ketsupachi too.

Today I'm bringing Mushihimesama Futari, Espgaluda II and Akai Katana to school for my students to see. :-) Shoot'em up evangelism!

I know! It's pretty great. There are only 2 people on the Ultra Novice leaderboards though, a guy who 1cc'd it and me. :S

I got the Cave Shooting Collection so I should have everything covered, will give it a look once I'm done with Mushi. :)

Good.

Updating my HTC One to Android 5.x broke all of my shmups
ALL OF THEM...

I know that feel. Fuck G-Gee for not updating their games, I've written them a dozen e-mails with no replies. Bastards. :(

Real shame. The quality seemed shoddy from the start though, with their portal thing in front of the actual app. After I noticed the games were broken it honestly didn't even occur to me they might possibly get fixed, I mentally wrote them off immediately.

hmmm... that's weird, they might've reset the leaderboards then. When we were playing (around the time it originally released) there were about a dozen or so on the board.

What have I just done? I just purchased a Japanese Sega Satarn, stereo RGB cable and mint complete copies of Battle Garrega and Soukyugurentai.

I have played neither but I am hyped.

Garegga is amazing. I'm jelly.

was there a patch for it? iirc they usually reset the leaderboards after patches

The Lord's work.
Soukyugurentai is legit. Love that game.

People keep saying this but I've never got "it." I bought that game sight unseen based on the positive word of mouth from shooting game dudes, but I can't help feeling a bit disappointed. It's OK, but nothing like Raizing's other games.

Maybe I'm just butt hurt that it got a port and not Batrider. :(

Raizing isn't everyone's cup of tea. I hope you like 'em though. I do!

I've been tempted to pick them up before as I use to watch super plays of both but my previous Saturn died many moons ago and I never picked up another console. Now that I have another system on the way, I decided to bite the bullet. I'm sure Garrega will beat me into submission like Ibara did until I can get use to it.

Yeah, I'm pretty pumped. It was not a cheap purchase though. Batsugun is next on the list.

ouch, yeah, even worse than I remember it being

Can anyone confirm that this lag in the newly released PS4 port of Gradius is or is not still an issue? It would be nice to have a solid arcade version of Gradius on my PS4, but if Konami actually managed to screw up porting a 30-year-old game, I'll stick to the versions I already have on other systems. Did the supposed patch fix it up, or should I pass?

I think my Cave collection for 360 is nearly complete...just missing the first Dodonpachi game. Now to actually play them more than once. Eventually. Mostly only played Deathsmiles 1 and a quick poke around the rest. Also got Ginga Force and Eschatos, really liked Eschatos.

Which Gradius?

XII Zeal really has me playing differently than i'd normal play...well anything. Ships being damaged from running into engine fire, doing the shooter shuffle to damage ships on the sides, takes practice!

Got a review code for XII Zeal, seems pretty cool. The side shot mechanic seems to be the most interesting thing so far. Their PR contact said they're trying to get someone to come up with a score run demo video to show off the game, seems like it'd be interesting since only the side kills count for some score multiplier stuff.

What's the difference between XII Zeal and XII Stag?
I have XII Stag on PS2, didn't know if it was worth it to double dip if they are mostly the same game.

I'm starting fresh and only own Crimzon Clover at this moment. Put a bunch of shmups on my steam wishlist and noticed a few on sale today. Any of these worth getting at this price? More importantly, anything i missed? I'm looking for games that can work with an arcade stick. Astebreed doesn't seem like it would be compatible for me.

YAAAAAAAS XII Zeal and Raiden III get.

I got the Hori Deathsmiles Arcade stick and really love Deathsmiles, but being European I have no way to play Deathsmiles 2 which sucks but everything is IP-blocked on 360. I hope they'd bring it to EU even this late.. I'm here to buy it.

I'm sure Garrega will beat me into submission like Ibara did until I can get use to it.

ibara is supposed to be one of yagawas easiest games to 1CC which is pretty frustrating knowing that. on the other hand, I've gotten to batrider stage 6 before but that's when it gets batshit insane (pun intended :P) and I've never made it past stage 4 in ibara.

the soundtrack for garegga is among the best and the arrange soundtrack on the saturn version makes it even better (make sure to turn it on). one of the reasons I kinda like the port more than the board itself. degeneracy marginal consciousness - probably my favorite stage tracks of all time.

Thank you, Steam. Picked up a bunch.

How's Phoenix Force? Been curious...
EDIT: NM. Yikes...gamermaker level. I'll stick to XIIZeal. My Shmup section on steam already requires me to scroll lol. I highly recommend

QP Shooting Dangerous and Super Galaxy Squadron for those who haven't played them yet. They went under the radar quick and are both pretty stellar.
They are both about $6 right now.

Also the awesome soundtrack for Super Galaxy Squadron is by "Random Encounter" and up to listen to on Their Bandcamp Page

As far as Steam games in the genre goes, I'd honestly say the only must-owns are Ikaruga and Crimzon Clover. Expanding it a bit I'd also add Raiden III (weak port warning, you'll probably need some JoyToKey grease to use a 360 arcade stick) and XIIZeal. Astebreed's gorgeous and probably worth checking out for that reason alone (I honestly don't remember if it would work decently on an arcade stick but I thiiiink it would), but it's far too forgiving to ever become tense. I'm not a fan of the structure of Jamestown.

Ikaruga, on sale? That never happens!

Also, don't forget about Revolver360. Seriously hectic at times and even the challenge mode is fun to do (and doubles as a very deep tutorial for playing better).

It's okay. It's just a ton of boss battles, really. But for $.097 I said why not. XIIZeal is awesome.

Has anyone played Reassembly? It was on my wishlist and I finally got it and played it last night. Amazing.

I really want to start getting into shmups so what is a recommended starting point? I've played a bit of ikaruga but noticed I'm terrible at it. Anything easier I should grab on steam to start off with or should I just keep at ikaruga.

Steam seems to be getting more and more shmups. Maybe check out Jets'n'Guns.

If you have a Saturn or can run MAME, play Galactic Attack/RayForce/LayerSection (same game, different names). One of my personal favorites.
Galactic_Attack_Gameplay.jpg

Thunder Force 2/3/4. Genesis is common. If you can import the Saturn versions of 3 and 4, I think they're more arcade accurate.

Even the R-Type HD remakes or remasters on PSN are good. I believe the game has a mode or option allowing you to play with infinite lives. May be good practice.

Thanks guys! Bought the following...

Astebreed
Syder Arcade
Danmaku Unlimited 2
Revolver360
(Already have Crimzon Clover)

I'm going to wait for a better sale on XIIZeal, Jamestown, and Steredenn. XIIZeal may have been a price mistake at 40% off. Its now listed as 20% off. Damn i was going to get it!
