Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Caladrius dev history goes X360 > AC > Blaze.

The X360 update basically upgrades it to the AC version; Blaze is still ahead in terms of features/content.

The Tale of Alltynex bundle is on sale for $9.99 on steam. I'm thinking about picking that up.

I haven't played any Siter Skain games before. I'm pretty interested in Kamui in particular. It reminds me of Layer Section which I'm a big fan of.

I came across this channel while looking for some gameplay footage of these games to help my decision. They have some nice in depth and professional video reviews for a bunch of STGs.

kamui is a lot of fun, similar to layer section (as you mentioned) and that bundle is definitely worth the asking price for some hidden gems.

Awesome doujin shooters, I played Alltynex 2nd long time ago before the Steam release. Definitely recommended.

Anyone know where to look for a pcb of Fantasy Zone II?

they're usually a bit pricey but I haven't had an issue with sophia-corp. they're very professional, responsive within business hours, and will give you quotes. I used them for my dimahoo/great mahou daisakusen board. http://sophia-corp.jp/
I typically get mine from different forums but I haven't really seen fantasy zone II.

otherwise, I know a buncha people that use try, mak, and g-front, but I think you might need a proxy with those sellers as you also would with yahoo auctions jp.

Sophia-corp are great, a little pricey. Though I think all of them are. And seems PCBs have been getting more and more expensive in Japan lately, seen talk about the market drying up as well.

Sophia is great and they stand behind what they sell. I've been really pleased with anything I've sourced from there, and all the art (when applicable) has really been nice.

Awesome, thanks for all the info guys. I'm looking to get a cab this year and some pcb's.

Damn, how come? To many private collectors having them exported?

yep, PCB prices have gone through the roof ever since candy cabs have been imported/acquired in europe/na/etc and superguns have become popular.. even the genre in itself is insanely expensive. 5+ years ago you could have probably gotten a battle garegga pcb for $150, and now you're lucky if you can find it for $550 (shitty resellers like stv/arcadetower even have some listed for $999 and one just sold for $959 which is obscenely ridiculous). even the saturn version is $250+ now...

I was lucky to get in 2012/2013 when the prices were still borderline ridiculous.

Damn, now I kind of don't want to get these. Always annoyed when I see stuff about collectors blowing up American prices for everything, Earthbound prices, buying up Jp stuff by the crateloads and emptying out stores, etc. Just to have shelves lined with shit to show off on social media.

still might be worth getting in before it increases. there may also be a pop if for some reason interest decreases.

there's also some great games still available at lower prices. e.g. a lot of psikyo stuff still sells pretty low

How about Mars Matrix and Progear? Aside from the Fantasy Zone games those are really the only shmups I'm interested in on arcade hardware.

progear cps2 w/ working battery hasn't really fluctuated in price but is still around $400-450. phoenixed versions are about half the price if not less. conversions are probably around $100.

mars matrix w/ working battery is around $150-175.

keep in mind that with cps2 boards that the lifespan of the battery is about 5 years or so and you - or some one - might need to change the battery when you get it.

LOL! Deathsmiles released and the extra they talked about to sweeten the pot was DLC of Deathsmiles RPG Maker assets.

So much for my dreams of incorporating the mobile game's character, story and customization stuff at launch. Maybe later?

It's been years since I've played Deathsmiles, but I gave the Steam port a quick play last night. There doesn't seem to be any slowdown, so it seems similar to the pre-patch North American Xbox release. If you're looking for an authentic arcade experience at all, you'll be disappointed at this point.

My game had slowdown?

I've got both versions side-by-side right now and I'm trying to find good scenarios to test in training mode.

But right now, going by the beginning of final stage EX with suicide bullets on level 2 in Arcade mode? They seem pretty dang similar. Edit: Same with other scenarios I look at.

So right now, I'm not buying Arcade mode discrepancies.

lol, and get this: when comparing Xbox 360 mode and Normal mode (equivalent "480p" modes) side-by-side in that same final stage EX scenario, the Steam release actually has slowdown similar to the 240p arcade mode of both where the Xbox 360 release runs at full speed.

It's as though the high-res mode of the PC release is the best of both worlds (accurate slowdown and better sprites).

I understand Thunder Force VI doesn't have the best gameplay, but the graphics sure are nice. While polygon graphics are no replacement for beautiful sprites (see MD TFIV) the visuals are a major improvement from the crude polygons of Saturn/PS1 TFV.

I got time to play a few more credits of Deathsmiles last night and I did definitely see -some- slowdown. I still don't think it's accurate, but it's been 6 years so.. Maybe I'll try to pull out a PCB and get some credits in for comparison.

It's also possible that some modes have issues, or issues with certain graphics cards or settings. I turned off SLI and it eliminated some graphical artifacts, so that might help as well. For anyone experiencing issues, I'd recommend turning off SLI or Crossfire to see if that helps.

Note that players on the shmups forum also seem to be having various issues with the port, and Degica did post in the thread so that's promising. I'm disappointed that Blackbird seems be confirmed gone. His presence was greatly appreciated.

I'm concerned that this one won't get as much community scrutiny since top players that care about such things have largely moved on from this game a very long time ago, mostly due to the lower level of difficulty. The game hasn't aged well for that part of the community.

A bit of an off-topic shot in the dark here, but does anyone here own a Pana Custom supergun?

I recently came into possession of one, but when I tried to use it with my CRT, the power supply went POP and gave up the ghost. So I was wondering if anyone here knew what kind of power supply I should replace it with? I ask because there's no documentation that I can find that tells me the required voltage/amperage/whatever else the power supply needs, nor is there anything on the PSU itself to help me. If anyone can help me, I'd really appreciate it.

I don't have the vanilla game on PCB, just MBL, and I was watching a stream of it earlier... There was like zero slowdown. Was that how it was for the X360 version? That's going to need some work done to it to match the original, couldn't imagine how Level 999 must play!

Deathsmiles MBL has never been a particularly accurate port in any platform or region from what I understand. Deathsmiles was Cave's first console release in a long time, and it showed.

You may have better luck over in the arcade stick thread seeing as it is more hardware oriented. The innards of a CRT scares the shit out of me so I stay away as much as I can.

I need this game.

Thunder Force VI video @ 60fps.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2xmXszZ-HQ

Why in the hell was it Japan-only?

In NA we got Gradius V. We got R-Type Final.
We even got Gradius III and IV, not to mention Thunder Force V: Perfect System on PS1.

Does TFVI run in PCSX2 ?

Meh.
Listen, I love the series. Thunderforce III was the first game I ever imported back in the summer of 1990, to be exact it was right after Argentina gave us the boot in the FIFA World Cup's semifinals, I remember it like it was yesterday.
I loved, truly loved III and its sequel. V was decent, but couldn't compare especially in the gfx department.
VI is mediocre. It's unfortunately one if the worst tuned high-profile shooters ever released, there's no good patterns being them enemies or bullets, no scoring system nor the urge to fight to survive since you will most probably 1-cc the game the first time you'll seat with it. It's basically good to look at (GV is much better) and you once you achieve maximum firepower you can just hold the fire button and "enjoy" the scenery. I doubt you'll play again after that, maybe once or twice. It's super disappointing.

Playing Deathsmiles and I don't understand how the hell people are scoring so high. It is upsetting to me. I wish they would at least put a PDF image in the game or game files to at least read how it works instead of having to go online for it. As a casual player of the genre I don't want to be bothered with doing that and I don't feel like it should be some kind of secret thing you discover while playing the game.

The in-game tutorial explains that you build up Power Up "meter" by collecting items and that the scoring is centered around Power-Up mode, doesn't it?

I mean, there's more to know than that of course (the game should probably point out that enemy types give out different amounts of items when hit with different types of attacks), but the base mechanics are briefly explained.

There are always replays, too.

It really was very considerate when Rising Star Games replaced attract mode in Akai Katana with a tutorial video. Unfortunately that was the first and last time this was ever done.

The basic rhythm of scoring in this game boils down to using the correct shot for each enemy to get more items to drop, then when your item gauge maxes out, cash it all in for bonus points. I think you're mostly supposed to use shot for ground enemies and laser for flying enemies, as a general rule, but there are exceptions.

By the way, another Degica staffer has stepped in as the new community liaison on the Shmups forums. Not sure if he's registered here.

I watched them, but damn I can't initially understand what is going on cause it is so hectic. Now that I know shot type is key I will study the replays to see what is used on what.

Deathsmiles

Shot-type is important, but it's just one of a number of factors.
Knowing when to power-up is essential.

Some examples:
In the graveyard, you'll want to power-up to take advantage of the house. Tons of reapers pop out of the chimney, and you can farm them for crazy amounts of jewels.

In the marsh, Usually I get the best results by powering up shortly after the giant cyclops appears. There are a ton of flying eyes and other creatures to destroy.

The lava stage. I'd say around the time you reach the cyclops (the one that drops a life-up if you're playing on rank 3). You can farm the rocks for oodles of points.

Eventually you'll be able to time your power-ups so that when they end, you can almost immediately grab another 1000 items. Chaining power-up modes is a difficult technique to figure out, but it won't affect your score too much if you goof up. Even if you only manage to grab 300-500 items shortly after a power-up, it's worthwhile.

It's also important that you build up your counter as quickly as possible. Crowns offer the larger boost, but once you hit 10,000 points an item (notice the shiny lettering), you'll want those crowns to hit the floor. A single crown will shatter into a handful of skulls. Every single one of those skulls is worth 10k, and they add up really quickly.

Also you get can get up to 10k+ for every suicide-bullet your familiar absorbs(the value is tied to your power-up mode counter). Naturally this requires playing a lot of rank 3 and the EX stage, which is a significant difficulty bump. I suck so bad at the Canyon EX stage it's laughable.

Hi all,

I posted this in the shmup release archive thread as well, but...

I've started a Steam group called 'TATE Mode' to identify games that natively support 'tate':

http:////steamcommunity.com/groups/tatemode#

Please join so we can start adding games and get a "TATE" label officially sanctioned on Steam, to make searching for vertical shmups that support TATE sooo much easier.

The group is also to provide monitor suggestions, support, answer questions, and basically talk about vertical gaming.

I admit, the group avatar is crap, so if anyone wants to make a cooler one, please PM me!

Thanks,
-FM

EDIT: Sorry, I don't know if asking people to join your Steam group is allowed on GAF. I just realised I could have made a blunder here, so please forgive me if I have. Know that it was a noble cause, and that there is a reason I'm still a "Junior Member". Thanks.

you should look into an issue or two I've seen reported (if you want of course :P)

per kiken on the shmup forums:
The slowdown in the first 6 stages seems to be ok... but the castle is an absolute mess. Entering with any level of Death Mode active is laughable as the game pretty much forgoes all slowdown after the initial ascent. As soon as the screen levels off and begins scrolling to the right, any slowdown triggered by spawning suicide bullets pretty much goes out the window. This is exactly how the NTSC/UC 360 release behaved pre-patch.

And for what it's worth, the volcano stage boss glitch is still present in the PC version.

and then more MBL chat of course which has supposedly been fixed in previous ports. the tech guys are degica are already researching some of the reported slowdown issues too.

No worries, I joined up. We also have the STG group, which I should really do more with but every time I tried to use the curator tools it would give me an endless ajax spinner. Should give it another go now.

Anyone who wants an invite just PM me your steam name. (Make sure you can find yourself here with the name you provide. Don't send steam login names.)

What are the top-tier shmups on Steam currently? Just making sure I'm not missing any.

(TATE support mandatory if vertical shmup)

What I have:
- Ikaruga
- Mushihimesama
- Crimson Clover
- Alltynex trilogy

What I plan to get:
- Deathsmiles
- Raiden IV
- XIIzeal

MBL wasn't fixed in any ports. It's the only one I have actual arcade PCB experience with.

I thought it was fixed in the US version to match the JPN version? The JPN version MBL - even though not 100% arcade accurate - used to be better than the US version at least according to EOJ's accuracy review.

I haven't been home to test it myself, but on his old writeup
11.) Deathsmiles Mega Black Label (Japanese X360, Arcade & X360 modes) - Each mode sucks in its own way (e.g. Arcade mode has slightly more slowdown in the first six stages, but the Ice Palace is missing over 50% of the slowdown – X360 mode has less slowdown in the first six stages, but is slightly more accurate in the ice palace, missing about 25-30% of the slowdown there), the US version is even more atrocious***. ~60-70% slowdown accuracy in the JP version modes, sub 50% in the US version modes. JP X360 mode is the best choice overall.

and I thought the US patch fixed most of the "atrocious" issues?

Thinking more about the group, any interest in a tournament? I'm thinking something very low rent/low stakes as these things tend to get out of hand fast. Highest score in GAME_X during TIME_Y sort of good times. Deathsmiles just came out so probably the best candidate.

Well don't have on hands experience with the NA version since Japanese 360 but I meant in general compared to the arcade board. None of the MBL mode ports are great.

big bummer too since MBL is the most fun for scoring (imo).

unfortunately I don't own or have access to either deathsmiles vanilla nor mbl boards to do any comparison, though I wouldn't mind grabbing an MBL in the future so I can have more of a reason to tate my cab monitor other than progear ._.
