Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

The next Cave PC port (if they continue putting out ports) will assuredly be something they ported internally to X360: in other words, DDP SDOJ, Deathsmiles 2X, Akai Katana, Espgaluda 2, Muchi Muchi Pork or Pink Sweets.

Yeah, I really doubt they'll do an "original" port any time soon while there are still 360->PC ports that can be done.

Ibara+Kuro is the dream port that never happened. I still desperately want it.

I bet this will be the next game, after DDP Resurrection release.

Unfortunately the truth is that I doubt they'll port it anytime soon if at all, which sucks. I've tried to stay optimistic about it but it just doesn't seem like a game they find to be a priority which sucks because from what I've played of it on MAME (which has it's problems) the game is too perfectly executed it's silly

Battle Garegga for PS4 confirmed.

ps4tgpnxogq58.png

Late to the party here but are those released only on Japan PSN? Any chance of them coming to the US? If no, I might just get them on the japanese one.

i'd like to see a pink sweets port if only because the price of the 360 version is getting out of hand

Yeah, I feel like I'm in some odd sorta dark future since I got my muchipork/pink sweets copy for $36 on amazon back in the day. Now its like 3 digits for the title.

Stilll I want the Deathsmiles 2x goodness and Espgaluda goodness to comeover first. Wouldn't mind Akai Katana though. Its probably got the most mileage from me followed by Deathsmiles 2x. Such a great couple of games.

I wish Pink Sweets wasn't so obtuse in its systems. Game is ridiculous once you read into it. Maybe english would help?

that's a megaton and I can't believe I haven't seen that till now. day 1 purchase from me even though I own the PCB and saturn version. I'm hoping they also include the arrange soundtrack which is so so so tight. degeneracy and marginal consciousness are two of my favorite gaming tracks of all time

degeneracy
marginal consciousness

it even has an item counter (making "options" formations way easier) and a rank graph ffs

I'm FREAKING OUT ahhhhhh

I felt like I paid too much for a used copy in great condition less than 12 months ago (but no regrets), however since then it has gone even higher... I've no idea what's causing the continual price surge.

probably muchi muchi pork since the game is absolutely fantastic and such a wonderful YGW shooter. pink sweets is great, but it's literally impossible unless you know how to abuse the infinite lives glitch or you stick to arrange mode.

anyone know what happened to treasure?

They talked about them on the 8-4 Play podcast a while back (no idea which episode, apologies), or maybe it was when some of them were on a Giant Bomb podcast? Either way, it was those dudes talking about it.

If memory holds they exist only in name at this point. Maybe a small team still for port work? I can't recall if the Ikaruga steam port was in house or contracted.

IIRC they've got an office address and a couple of people that handle licensing & royalty revenue but they don't have any active development staff anymore. The failure of Gaist Crusher basically exhausted any capital they had left.

The fact that Treasure is basically no more is quite sad. They are easily in my top 3 of retro developers. Every time I played one of their games for the first time it was always a blast and they always made me remember why I love games. They were also always pioneers in the industry, showing us gamers for many console generations that their games were unmatched in terms of visuals and gameplay.

At least they basically went out with a bang with Sin & Punishment: Star Successor on the Wii.

Any PC SHMUPs that can make good use of ultra wide screen? I will soon have a 21:9 2560x1080 monitor. Thanks.

Dariusburst is probably it. Most games in this genre aren't designed with huge horizontal screen real estate in mind because it's pretty much impossible to track everything going on over such a huge area. Also, unless you have a mount capable of going to portrait mode, you're in for a really bad time if you try a vertical STG on it.

darius burst

Perfect. Will look into it.

Ha, no. I won't be trying that. I know 21:9 is not an ideal aspect ratio for SHMUPs. That's OK. But Darius Burst could be pretty fun on it.

I was wondering if Sky Force Anniversary is any good? It was released on consoles just now.

Was wondering the same... the promo text refers to it as the "legendary shoot 'em up" celebrating it's 10th anniversary.

Never heard of it - was this some obscure arcade or something?

Not really legendary, no. Sky Force was basically a mobile game that looked better than most, which the developers were persistent enough to keep updating.

Sky Force is the kind of game where you have to fully power up your plane before you can really play the game (that is, on the hardest difficulty). There are upgrades that you have to buy (by grinding for a lot of money), and upgrades that you can only get randomly with a low drop rate.

By the time you're experiencing the game as it was meant to be played, you feel like you've played your fill already.

They're actually both available on the Wii U Virtual Console. :)

I own physical copies of both but it's still nice to have.

That's why I said ports! I haven't bought a Nintendo console for over a decade... because all I actually want to play on them are a few shmups and rail shooters.

I liked it a lot. My notes on the PC release:
This wonderful Euro-SHMUP represents a decade of refinement. Its visual are stunningly lush, crisp and got that nice HD pop. The soundtrack is so Amiga, the nostalgia almost hurts. Lots of arcade pedigree, the gameplay reminds me a lot of Capcom's "1944 - The Loop Master" with the super-deformed military cute of Irem's "In the Hunt" or SNK's "Metal Slug" series. The STG part of the gameplay is pure arcade, but the level progression very "home" style. The play through involves unlocking levels, upgrading you fighter jet, which enables you to complete challenges, that again unlocks levels. There is some need for replaying missions and depending on your skill level also a need to grind for upgrades. I was never annoyed by replaying a few levels since the game is so much fun and acing the challenges very satisfying. The SHMUP style is more geared towards accuracy than dodging bullets, definitely more relaxing than constant peak focus. Nvidia user pro tip, Unity engine and the custom anti aliasing flag 0x004000C1 works perfectly for SGSSAA (read: impeccable picture quality).

This has a comprehensive list of what's coming. Some don't look hot and some look mediocre, but there are some good ones on there. It's not low bandwidth friendly though. So be warned.

Great Battle Garegga news - cross-cross-posting via SmiteOfHand in the dedicated thread, and subsequently the shmups forum:

Looks like there will be a physical release.

It sounds like there will be a physical release too, according to Famitsu:
http://www.famitsu.com/news/201609/08115053.html

"限定版パッケージ『バトルガレッガ Rev.2016 Premium Edition』(サントラCD、限定ブックレット、クリアファイル5種類同梱)は発売日未定、価格未定"

Titled "Battle Garegga Rev.2016 Premium Edition", includes a soundtrack CD, a booklet and some clear files. No release date yet.

Physical PS4 version before the year is out? I'll take it!

I have

Judgment Silversword
Ikaruga
Raiden 3 and 4
Shmup Skill Tests

which of these games will be better to start learning how to play shmups

Raiden IV probably. Ikaruga is fantastic but unconventional, Skill Test is mostly a fun multiplayer party game.

Really though, just pick a game you like, stop using continues, and watch yourself progress.

I always heard that Raiden IV was the hardest one to start but without an argument, whyyou think that is easier?

What Tain said. I'd also add that what you hope to get out of shmups is important. The whole personal growth, competing with yourself thing, is what is most valuable, imo. If you look at world record scores and the likes it is easy to become discouraged or distracted because it takes a lot of work to get to that level. Instead focus on yourself. Keep track of your personal bests. Make note of when you improve, even small improvements. Especially small improvements!

A common criticism of shmups is that they are static and memorization heavy. It is important to keep in mind the game isn't the one doing the changing.

Raiden IV: For what is on your list I think it has the best blend of all things shmups. It has a bit of that old school feel without being too dry or chained by tradition. It incorporates a lot of lessons in design that were figured out over the years. It has the intensity that a bullethell can deliver without going full bullethell. Keeps it reigned in. It is a good, covers all bases, shoot 'em up.

I don't think it's an easy game, not at all. I just think that it's a relatively conventional one (in a good way, like sibarraz said) that'll get you more adjusted to the genre.

Oh sweet jeebus. I hope it's not a limited release with a preorder that sells out within seconds. I'll be fucking livid if I miss this one!

Oh wow. I should check the shmups boards more often. I'd wait up super late/get up really early to have my finger on the mouse button for a preorder.

What a time to be alive.
