Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

What are the best co-op SHMUPs that aren't too tough? In around Jamestown difficulty.

If you don't mind going retro and tracking down a copy, Twinkle Star Sprites is a really unique take on competitive co-op shmups. Its like a shmup version of Super Puzzle Fighter where defeated enemies fly over to the other players screen. Great fun if you give it a shot (pun intended :/)

Might be a long shot but does anybody know of a source on the web to get digital files of shooter movestrips?

I found this site from a user at shmups but they are designed for the Egret's bigger space and I'm looking for Astro size. He gives instructions on cropping and editing but I don't have photoshop.

Looking for a Battle Garegga strip file that I could take and print out.
Sent you a PM with an image based on what that guy said...not sure how you plan to print it but you have a file to work with at least.

I printed a Japanese Ketsui one from here way back. Just did it on my home printer on fancy photo paper, did it in 2 or 3 segments split across the areas between the main instruction boxes so it looks more or less clean.

:(

I also lost my PC disc in a move somewhere. Extra sad.

What!?, did Raiden 2 come out for PC???

To be fair Radien 2 was bollocks!! so no great loss to MAME their...Raiden DX on the othe hand well thats a different story!!.

Im starting to wonder if Raiden 2/DX will ever be emulated in MAME, its been in MAME for around 5 years now maybe longer and no one seem interested in getting past the copy protection on the rom

Very cool. Thanks again.

And thanks for the link to the site. I seen it before but forgot about it.

Raiden II was cool, but you're right that DX is way better. It was ported by Cyber Front and published in America by Interplay. It was allegedly based on the PSX port. I bought a loose disc a bunch of years ago off of eBay for like $4. The price seems to have gone up since then. Super extra sad.

Emulation has made large forward strides too. The graphics are slightly glitched, and the bullets are invisible, but it runs well. And I can finally watch that godlike intro sequence.

I would recommend Bullet Soul for the Xbox360 - pretty mindless shooter, with an emphasis on pretty.
It's region free and my go-to shooter when I just want to blow shit up. :)

If you're looking for classics, go directly to MUSHA for the Genesis. Awesome game, and not too difficult.

I've been doing some digging online to find some more shmups and I think I found two that really catch my eye. The first is PC and I'm not sure if its finished or still under development. I can't find much on it at all.

I really dig its music and its visual flare. Lots of nice effects popping off in this and I'd like to play it. Reminds me a lot of the eXceed games.

The other one I bought after digging through a thread on xbox 360 indie shmups Here on shmups.system11.org

Its called Snops Attack! Zombie Defense.

I hate fucking zombie anything titles but this game other than having zombie in its name isn't zombie based. Its a Crimzon Clover inspired game.

Just look at this thing.

This thing apparently was #1 one the indie games shmups category the year it came out and with good reason. Visually its full of quality and its got some great gameplay.
Gameplay

Its setup really well. The weapons are cool. Some shoot beside you, some enhance your spread and since you have both a spread shot and a beam attack to switch between by pressing x to switch you get 2 different types of shot per weapon. You can even hold right trigger to shoot behind you which is useful during stages and is outright required versus some bosses like in stage 2. Anyhow buddies, weapons, bombs, shields, and powerups are always flying around on screen to collect so tons to zip around and try to grab during the action keeps it really fun.

You have a gauge you fill by combo-ing which you do by shooting things and you collect crystal skulls enemies drop when they die by releasing the trigger to pull them in. Sadly the magnet ability to pull them in isn't very strong and you have to be close to them to get them so dont think of it as let go, receive skull. Many is the crystal skull I lost because it just didn't pull toward me far enough before it droppped off the screen. I treat them like coins in Castle Shikigami 2 and just try to fetch them and let off the trigger to help clump them is how I do it. You can combo skulls too for a higher score value so pick them up in clumps or try to find patterns to make certain their is a steady supply. BTW some enemies have a lot of health like the easter island heads so I think they are mainly in areas to aid in combo-ing score multipliers so use them wisely.

Anyhow once the gauge is full hit y for a huge hyper blast that covers the screen. Visually its stellar. Sound is kind of crazy. Lots of moans and weird shit like a cute voice saying "good job!" when you die. Music isn't stellar and honestly I wish it would play more tracks against bosses, but its decent enough and never grates so it works well enough. What amazes me is how long each stage is for a shmup. Usually shmups aren't this long these days per level. Maybe its just me, but I found levels to be quite lengthy and rewarding and I'm betting some huge score attacks can be done on these things.

Definitely buy this game. Snops Attack! Zombie Defense is only $3 and thats because due to its file size microsoft wouldn't let him charge any less. The thing is its a steal at $3 and had it been a PC release I feel he could have easily gotten more if he asked. The man earned your cash. Go get it. This is easily one of the best games I've downloaded on my xbox for shmupping.

Don't forget that Capcom Arcade Cabinet collection finally streets next week ($30). Great ports by M2 and a ton of shooters in there, including:

1942
1943: Battle of Midway
1943 Kai
Exed Exes
Legendary Wings
Section Z
Side Arms
Vulgus

Was actually playing Side Arms last night - holds up surprisingly well.

You could also add Son Son to that list, since its essentially a side scrolling shooter, similar to Section Z and Side Arms, but with the illusion of platforming. Great game, and one of my favs in the collection.

Oh nifty! Watched some youtubes. It looks fun. The Gun.Smoke game I guess can be considered a shooter as well.

The Side Arms and Ghosts and Goblins ports are the two I've been waiting for.

It's on sale, but they don't seem to have opted to put it on the English side of DLsite, so you have to make an account* on the Japanese side to buy it. Has DRM.
http://www.dlsite.com/home/work/=/product_id/RJ091855.html

Demo version link:

*You can buy in guest mode without an account, but then you won't be able to download updates, and I'm not sure about transferring DRM activations to new computers without an account.

Can't you just tell them to print it at desired size, that's what I used to do.
Not any more though as I needed a new printer anyway and A3+ printers are just a little bit more expensive these days .

Original vs translated Emph Copy :

That is a good idea.

I actually brought the file to work and will see how the color xerox machine handles it. I know there is a tray for oversized paper.

So I printed it out today at work. The biggest paper they had in the office was A3 and as soon as it came out I knew it was too small. I'm guessing I'll have to take it to a Staples or Kinkos.

Also, the color printer at the office is good (a monstrosity) but it is a waxy type of ink designed for volume so the detail is not quite there...even choosing 600dpi.

It's a good thing I've got a lifetime of shmups to keep me busy until I, someday, buy Hyper Duel. No rush.

By the time I buy it every copy will be ridden with disc rot D:

Is there any hype for Shooting Love 10th Anniversary?

I am watching STGW's video covering G-Stream. I had never heard of these games - is the above collection worth getting?

(as background RFA is one of my favorite video games ever, not just shmups, and hearing that the lead artist was also responsible for G-Stream is pretty cool)

I'm mildly hyped for this solely based on the Raiden Fighters connection. I'll have to wait a bit since DDP SDOJ is coming in fast, but I'll probably grab it down the line. Must support 2D games.

I'm amped for it...even moreso than SDOJ. Obviously that opinion will probably change once I have SDOJ in hand.

One more week for both!

And off topic but I got around to reading up on Mobile Light Force. How did this even come to be? For the uninformed, Mobile Light Force is Gunbird localized for PSX. It has some wacky Charlie's Angels cover art, but it's Gunbird.

Mobile Light Force 2 has the exact same cover art , but it's actually Shikigami no Shiro!

There was a cover mockup I made for Shmups forum back when we were imagining what cover art Aksys was going to publish Deathsmiles with:

Still waiting on Sturmwind.... :-/

Did you order direct from redspot?

I've got the two shooters next ordered along with the Kongiku doll and the new Ikaruga plastic model. Gonna be like damn Christmas. Should be getting a new stick just in time for the release as well!

Did you also know that both games released on the same day? It's true!

However, they are in no way equal. Gunbird (MLF1 for PS1) has saving and tate mode both removed --so you can't save options or scores, and can only play horizontally oriented in this vertical-screen shooter. The game also had the story completely ripped out, it's all gone. They even renamed some of the characters to names based on some of the "localization" staff! The Japanese version has saving, tate support, and a silly story (like Gunbird 2). It is not XS's worst shmup port -- their version of Sol Divide (PS1) is even worse, because it also had saving and most of its story removed and by stripping saving out of that game they completely destroyed the entire point of the Original mode -- but it's pretty bad.

Shikigami no Shiro 2 (MLF2 for PS2)... well, they cut out tate and the story, as in Gunbird, but in this one at least the save system is left in, and they didn't rename the characters. And while the story text is gone, the little voice quotes are left in, translated into English, so you can get a slight bit of the feel of the game, more so than the above two PS1 games at least.

Actually, Mobile Light Force 2 is the first Shikigami no Shiro; not 2

Shikigami no Shiro II was released in America as Castle Shikigami 2, with the tate mode intact from the original release. Localization is pretty lol though. Check audio atrocities for some of the funnier ones.

Amusingly, the printed manual for Castle Shikigami 2 still has references to stuff like "MOBILE LIGHT FORCE 3 ATTACK", as if they had originally planned to continue using the Mobile Light Force name and changed their minds halfway through. When I was making that Deathsmiles mockup I had originally wanted to make the number a "4" but reversing one of the Es to make a "3" was a lot easier.

I did not. Went through NCSX, since it was slightly cheaper after shipping at the time.

Right, of course. I keep meaning to buy that game, but haven't yet... I have MLF2 and Castle of Shikigami III for the Wii, and am absolutely terrible at both games (I haven't gotten anywhere remotely near the end of either one, I don't think... 4-3 is as far as I've reached in MLF2 before running out of continues, and I'm not better at the third game), so I don't know if it'd be worth it, unless I saw it for cheap, which I haven't yet. I much prefer 4th-gen-style stuff to bullet-hell...

And on that note, I got Super Nova (for SNES; aka Darius Force in Japan) recently. Surprisingly good game! It's really hard, but fun, and I keep going back to it. I think I've gotten to the third pair of levels so far. You only get two continues, and you lose powerups when you die so losing a single life can be very bad, so it requires substantial memorization, even on "Easy". The game has good graphics and music though, and is as fun to play as any Darius games I've tried (it's not my favorite shmup series, but it's a decently good one certainly). I'm surprised the game is so under-recognized...
