Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

I did not. Went through NCSX, since it was slightly cheaper after shipping at the time.

Ah ok,

Yesterday I went with tha Play-asia listing (restock 28th) and slow mail. Under $50 but I can wait a few weeks especially with SDOJ next week. I'm pretty excited it looks legit and quite a bit different than the NG.Dev titles. Can't wait to see what it looks like on VGA.

How is Shooting Love? Never played it - looks like Raiden to me.

On a related note: STG Weekly just did a video on another Triangle Service game: G Stream 2020. Looks like the same game to me

Did you watch the video? Shooting Love is a compilation which includes G Stream. The guy responsible for the art also did the art for the Raiden Fighters series. The answers to all your questions are at your fingertips!

Odd question but can you buy and setup Nesica Arcade cabinets for America complete with the card and everything or is this japan only or something. I'm trying to find stuff online about how to buy nesica cabinets and what games are on them, but I'm coming up with really vague stuff. They just put Skullgirls on this too so I'm really interested in saving for one.

Pretty sure it is for operators only, and in Japan, only. I've looked for input as well. Digital delivery system for account holders (kinda like theaters) with revenue sharing.

Dang...It'd really be nice to get those other Crimzon Clover modes and that third ship someday by landing a nesica. Plus I could play fighters like Rumble Fish2 and Daemon Bride along with the new Matrimelee and stuff thats all japan only.

:C

Wooo It's gonna be a good long weekend!

Can't find any close up shots of the instruction sheet. I don't suppose any GAF dudes got in?

Pic credit goes to Impress Watch:

http://game.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/20130524_600876.html

Couldn't make it. :( Wanted to go though.

But you can see from the instruction sheets that there are 6 playable characters: Alex, Kei, Maria, Sophia, Lilith and Caladrius, which lines up with what is available as DLC for the game at the moment.

I'm curious what type of arcade features it will have. I would think online Leaderboards would be bottom line, considering how ahead of the pack Crimzon Clover is with all its stuff, and this is technically a competing title. There was actually an interview with the Caladrius director in the latest Arcadia where he mentioned that he wanted to develop the arcade version so "people would be glad they played it in the arcade", which to me sounds like some original features or characters.

We'll see. Incidentally that article says the Caladrius arcade version is "currently released", but that is not the case. Official Twitter is saying early summer.

Good lookin' out adverse, I totally missed that detail (and was about to ask which characters would be included).

@sixteen-bit: I'm not 100%, but I'm willing to bet that those are only Lindbergh cabs. Most of these games shown are running on Ring' hardware, and as you said, Lindbergh has been mothballed quite a while ago.

Which brings me to my next question. Who still makes cabs in Japan? Taito has Viewlix, Namco still makes Noir cabs for the Tekken gams right? And I guess now we know that SEGA still cranks out Lindbergh cabs for whatever it has running under the hood. Any one else left standing?

BOTEC,

D'you wind up getting Lilith? Still torn if I should get her or not. Sophia cool but I never like the Raiden laser type thingy.

I did, but I was pretty drunk that night, and have not gone back to try her out for serious.

Edit: OK, I tried her out, while a little less drunk, and she's OK. She's a "regular" character, so if you got Caladrius, you're taking a step back. Her main weapon is OK, her E1 shot is cool, E2 is a fucking waste of time, and her E3 seems like it would be cool if powered up all the way, since it can cancel bullets. I do like her psycho VA, and I'm getting used to her art work. This whole psycho-cat-girl-thing she has going on is doing it for me, after several drinks...

I wish it were easier to search threads on mobile NeoGAF, because I just found out about Chronoblast and I'm very interested in what you guys thought about it. About to fork over $1.

Considering music games is a much larger genre and still had so few votes the results are statistically insignificant, I think it would be an exercise in futility.

I think it would actually get more feedback since there's a lot more shmups, but who knows. I think shmup fans are a lot more devout than rhythm gamers.

Either way I wouldn't mind putting forward the effort. I still loved doing the rhythm gaming one.

Would you all be interested in a NeoGAF Essential Shmups thread like the rhythm gaming thread I did?

i'd be down!
i'm playing catchup...gamestop had deathsmiles at like $9 practically new, buddy of mine picked up IREM arcade classics on amazon as well, been on kind've a kick lately

Shooting Love 10th Anniversary trailer.

shit yeah that looked awesome!

Sega Private Show 2013 happened.

wow, is this an annual thing over there?

Put Metal Black on there. I swear to god I just had a like religious experience with this game - it's SO good. I had played it like five times before and didn't really think much of it to be honest. Out of nowhere I throw it on today... and everything clicks.

The setting. The weapon system. The music. The bosses. Everything just clicked into place and I swear this is the best Taito game I've ever played and MAYBE the best horizontal shooter I've ever played.

I'm swooning. How did I not see how good this game was before?

The bonus stages are ass though. Waste of time.

I actually like the idea of doctoring up a variant of that personally. Looks clean and nice.

Well, I mean specifically for someone to doctor that up. :P Not sure what to replace the icons with. It could look sharp if a professional does it.

For the FPS thread, they used guns.

I don't even know how I'd construct a "top STGs" list. I think I know what I'd put at and around the top, but you could say the genre has some history, lol.

Give Chronoblast a shot, too. It's a $1 love letter to DDP.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkGH0weGQfc

Downloading the trials for both now. Whats funny is i'd never have taken a second look at Snops judging by the cover art used in the marketplace.

Some of these indies seriously need to get someone on a forum or just pay someone to design a cover art.

I know the cartoon cat is the pilot, but a view of him in the cockpit being chased by a giant zombie monster would've worked better :P

Fun Fact. Chronoblast has an update coming to it! New mode, rebalanced ships, and different scoring system. I submitted some art for the thing along with a bunch of other fans and n0rtygames has been posting on it as he sets up the thing.

Definitely a great game and if you love Dodonpachi then you should be ALL about Chronoblast.

BTW I've been playing Crimzon Clover for awhile now and I gotta say its incredible. I absolutely love the way the lock on works in this game. The longer you hold it the more meter it sets up for your break mode and its often crucial not to pop break mode till youve stocked more than just the initial bar so that during break mode you can still achieve enough bar for Double Break mode! Break too early and you'll have a hard time not killing everything on screen before you can farm meter from it. Soooooooo good. You also start to realize that some of the best things you can do is decide which guys NOT to kill with shot and to fly away from so that the homing attack can use them to stock a bunch of meter quickly. Any tank or large bullet sprayer in level one has me try to dodge them so I can bank the meter and enjoy most of the stage in double break mode.

Also SCREW the spider boss in stage 2. I dont buy continues in the limiter shop and I dont buy lives. I just buy levels and ships to grind on and that spider kills me soooooo often in my runs. He's one of those bosses that bump into you by diving around the screen and I have a ton of trouble with those.

Konami at the very least still makes some large-style game cabinets (at the JAEPO show they had cabs that tied into their Dragon Collection social games although I never saw one in an arcade later). They also have the cabs for Steel Chronicle.

I believe there are also a sub-tier of "minor" cab makers like Micomsoft and also other "large-style" game cabinet makers. But in terms of the coin-op video game genres that we would actually care about, the pickings are indeed slim nowadays.

Replace the icons with either pickups, ships or characters from shmups IMO. Those will be the most iconic things any of us remember.

Crimzon Clover ship, Opa Opa, Rtype, Gradius, Abnormal Reiko, coins, stars, gold, and power up icons all turn us into grinning idiots (or at least me :D)
If you want just use a danmaku bullet spread screenshot as a background on low opacity for excitement value with all them bullets.

Here are some thingies to play with.

^yayyy Opa-Opa! always happy to see that little guy, loved his appearance in PSO.

i know it's prolly on the maisntream end here, but finally got around to Deathsmiles, and it's awesome. i wonder if the LE was worth it? wish id've know it was a horizontal shooter when it dropped.

any other good SHMUPS i don't know about on XBLA? wasn't sure about Sina Moire or whatever, might just sit on the rest of these for castle of illusion/duck tales but i'd love to find more j-shooters on there somehow

*WAY LATER EDIT is trouble witches neo good? or should i just run with Radiant Silvergun? the latter also looks like it's never going to PSN at this point.
