Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Wondering if it is the same soundtrack as the 360 DLC?

I'd imagine that the tracks that were part of the 360 DLC would be the same, there is only so many ways you can convert real music into beeps and clicks. But there are new tracks in the PS3 version, like the two samples on that page.

It is a good new soundtrack, though! Sounded more like a 16-bitter to me. I was a big fan of this game on 360. Really looking forward to all the new stuff...especially the AC mode!

$85? ...guess I should have bought a cheaper copy and not opened that one. Did that for Under Defeat (PS3 version was $20, the LE I have is $100 new)

Crimzon Clover is on Steam now?! Hot damn, where have I been.

I haven't picked up a new shmup since the last DDP.

Any good new ones to pick up on 360?

Hmmm... not sure if I will enjoy this if I buy it or not. More of a fan of the standard, vertical bullet-dodgers. Anyone have any input? It's a bit tempting since I know a lot of people were looking forward to this game on PS3.

It is a very cool game, but it is a bit different from the "standard" game in the genre. For starters, you need to pay attention to the angle your ship is firing at. You can be shooting to the left, while moving to the right and not hitting the thing you want to hit. You'll need to get used to rotating your ship while also trying to dodge shit. It's tricky. Also sub-weapons will be key to doing any real damage since the peashooter on your helicopter seems to only give the bad guys a mild headache. It's definitely a unique game, I like it enough to have bought it three times, but I don't think I need a fourth copy.

I think it's worth your time. Less bullet-dodgy than you might want, but it's still really good. BOTEC summed it up really well.

I'm in a similar boat. I own the Dreamcast Original, and the PS3 re-release. Not sure I need it on 360 too.

So does anyone know if Jamestown Plus for PS4 will be coming to Steam? Its added the moons of mars as stages and has a few extra ships and I'd definitely rebuy for that.

I didn't even hear about it until now... I loved Jamestown. I would totally get it if I had a PS4.

It's very very pretty and very very very easy (biiig regenerating health bar). I'm not the biggest fan, but a lot of people love it.

Hmm I guess I could wait for a gog or steam sale then. On that note, is there a go to list for all region free 360 shooters released to this point? Or is it pretty much still whats listed in the OP?

That post is missing Sadaioujou, which is a region-free JP release.

Hahahaha I'd be legit shocked if something by Cave or G. Rev is ever listed in those top 10 lists.

I was a bit underwhelmed by Under Defeat (after I bought it "twice" for $20 extra to keep from opening a sealed 360 LE) but it's easily worth $2.70. It's probably my least favorite implementation of "arcade lag as a feature" since it constantly lags when you're blowing stuff up rather than there being tons of bullets on screen.

I know it "started it" but it still feels really weird to see Space Invaders on lists like that. It really doesn't play anything like what I play shmups for.

To be fair it says "Top 10 Classic Shoot 'em Ups".

Also Under Defeat is definitely worth that price. I imported that game and still thought it was worth it. If you don't like that strange way of positioning your shots, there's an option to play with two sticks.

WatchMojo.com's "Top 10 Shoot 'em ups" list features Geometry Wars 2, the original Space Invaders, and 3 Treasure games in the top 3 spots. Did you know that Radiant Silvergun is one of the rarest games ever?

I'm not sure why it's titled Top 10 "Classic" Shoot 'em Ups either, when the list features pretty current stuff too.

Out of all the R-Type games they pick R-Type Final?

They also give an honorable mention to DDP (1997) and show video of the wrong DDP.
