Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Can't speak for him, but I'm no fan of Nintendo's IPs(or the company, really).

Oh yeah, I understand. I don't usually cross the streams between the shooter crowd and the Nintendo IPs. They are wildly separate. Just, this year was pretty strong with the mid-tier Japanese releases like Bayo 2 which seem to have a bit of crossover. At least a title or two.

Wha?

Is Caldarius Blaze also self-published by MOSS? Just looked at videos of the game and it looks awesome. Sometimes it sucks to be a PC exclusive player. Only Moss game on Steam is Raiden III. I hope H2 Interactive jumps on this as well.

Thanks , i got crimzon and passed on re:actor because i prefer vertical shmups.

Any other good ones on steam? (Other than the obvious Ikaruga)

Danmaku Unlimited 2, Astebreed, Hangeki

Yep, self-published.

Yep, self-published.

Well H2 Interactive seems to be on a roll with Japanese releases. Hopefully they get their mitts on this. There's also Nyu Media and AGM Playism.

I made this post on the Steam Sale thread, but I feel it should be here as well:

Here's a list of notable SHMUPs that were released this year that fans should keep an eye out for if they show up as "NEW DEALS" or "DAILY DEALS."

Crimzon Clover is currently on sale for $3.39.

Danmaku Unlimited 2 is currently on sale for $1.99

Astebreed is currently onb sale for $4.49

Revolver 360 RE:ACTOR is currently on sale for $4.99

Ikaruga maintains its $9.99 price tag.

Hangeki is currently on sale for $8.49

RefleX is currently on sale for $3.99. There's also ALLTYNEX Second and Kamui that make up the other part of this trilogy, but don't expect them to get a discount since they were just released.

Savant Ascent was released in December of last year, but it was recently updated in October with a free expansion. It's currently on sale at $0.99

So I checked out the new Famitsu App with the Psyvariar IOS feature. Hoo baby, worse than I expected.

1. It just looks like Psyvariar. I was expecting at least a graphic refresh.

2. It's Free to Play, and I guess you unlock stages/songs etc.

3. It seems like it's not a new game, it's actually a port of Psyvariar with new stuff added.

I think the Buzz system might be fun on iOS, but otherwise no interest whatsoever.

gonna be heading there within the next couple weeks (mainly going to try and set the high score on their new dimahoo board) so I'll have to check it out :)

I'll be swinging through there for a day (chicago) towards the end of January as I drive back to socal. Making sure to spend a few hours at that arcade. Gonna be cool to try out.

It continually gets better and better. We actually had the chicago shmupsmeet there this year and everyone was impressed with the dedicated shooter section.

Newly added dimahoo, garegga sometime in the future, ddp, ddpdoj, ikaruga, cyvern, mars matrix, raiden fighters, etc.. about 30-40 shooters in that back room. a lot of the high scores are pretty impressive, but I actually walked in and set the progear arcade high score on my first credit which was pretty funny :p

Worth checking out when youre in the area.

Santa just left me a Galaxy Tab under the xmass tree.. what are some really nice shmups (besides dodonpachi & espgaluda) for it? much appreciated!

HOLY SHIT!

Got a Hammer Away PCB yesterday for Xmas! @_@

Hooked it up in my cab last night when I got home and it's awesome. Some details:
-You helicopter has separate buttons for air and ground attacks
- Sprites seem to be animated really well. Especially your ship's turning animation
- You shoot at angles when turning left/right
- Graphics and sound are awesome. "Looks and feels" like a System 18 game if you know what I mean.
- it's HARD!

My first no continue run on any shmup ever. Crimzon Clover does an excellent job of making you feel powerful with it's scoring system and gameplay mechanics. Sure, it's on Novice. Sure, I'm using the most powerful ship on the game. I don't care. It still felt awesome. The last 3 minutes were intense because I made a lot of mistakes in a row. Somehow my focus level increased 10 fold and I was able to kill the final for of the boss without getting hit.

Crimzon Clover World Ignition - Novice Original No Continue Run (Type Z)

The video runs at 60fps, but I didn't think YouTube was going to compress it to the point where 720p looks horrendous. I'll probably record at 1080p from now on.

Wouldn't 1080p be even more compressed, though? (I know nothing about YT and their compression algorithms)

I don't know. I'm just wondering if it would look better. At least the 60fps seems to work okay, but there seems to be some slowdown here and there that doesn't exist in the original file.

Got one of these for Christmas:

Can't believe how much fun I can still have playing Galaxian. Even though it's pretty basic compared to Galaga or Gaplus.
Played Bosconian for the first time on this thing. That game is just....too easy. It would probably be a lot better if it was just more challenging.

Here's some cool and unexpected news: Gryzor87 (frequent Locomalito collaborator) is doing an official arrange soundtrack for Crimzon Clover!

Boot - EPROMs set on an old Clutch Hitter system 18 board.

There's only one "real" known board out there.

Right, I thought you'd somehow managed to finagle that one for yourself.

Where'd you get the Hammer Away at?

I just got a super excellent deal on original Sengeki Striker and a Kaneko Supernova board. $165 shipped from Japan. Can't wait to get it....and eventually Cyvern.

Grats on the clear!

DOJBLEX is the tits. No wonder why it's the Cave shmup all others are measured against.

There are plenty out there, just, in arcades/MAME and on consoles (starting with the vast majority of Konami's catalog) and not really on Steam, sorry to say.

Yup, I've pretty much played all the old ones on consoles, arcades, etc. I was just hoping there were some recent ones that were made, but I guess that's not the case. :(

I've been kind of tempted to make one myself, but was too lazy. It's worth it? I was a middleman in the process of getting the game into MAME and had ample opportunity to post the first proper captures etc. But... lazy.

Still pissed that some unscrupulous Japanese person took the ROMs as soon as they hit distribution and managed to list one on YJP which sold for hundreds of dollars before everyone knew it was just a burned set. Kind of takes the good natured way games are dumped and submitted these days and shits all over it. Next in line on the hate list are the people who know they have undumped versions of not-very-interesting games and try to use that fact to sell them. They won't donate or even loan (even if you offer to pay shipping both ways). I'm sure they've had fun playing games in an emulator before though.

I can't say I know how much effort it takes, but I'm loving the game so far!

It's challenging enough that I keep coming back for more. Not sure how many levels the game actually has, but I'm having trouble getting past level 2 ATM!

All in all - I'd say go for it. It's a really good game that deserves to be in a cabinet :-)

Is Raiden IV considered hard? It's kinda kicking my butt, but I'm really enjoying it. Only complaint so far is that I wish enemy bullets contrasted more with background and my shots so I could see them a little more easily.

Yeah, that's my issue with Raiden IV as well. Bullets don't stand out from the background very well at all.

But yeah, it's tough. Furthest I can get on one credit is halfway through stage 3.

Holy moly. Congrats on making it to the100 mil club..
I know you were working on that for a bit and I can't even imagine with my measily 15 mil runs. Still working on those loop requirements myself D:

Progear?

It's a CPS2 game. Unfortunately the only home port was for old Japanese flip phones.

one of my absolute favorite shmups of all time (definitely my favorite CAVE shooter).
that stgweekly episode that STG mentioned (using his playthrough) is actually really informative/awesome. they make some great comparisons like how the bullet spreads, scoring mechanics, and stages resemble the same organic flow from ketsui.

I put this in the CC OT, but it's in community now so I'll post here instead.

New DLC is set to be released in the coming months. It's for an OST by Gryzor87 who worked on Hydorah's soundtrack. Degica has also been pretty adamant about grabbing suggestions from System11 for Yotsubane. I don't know if anything will come to fruition for this game, but I'm sure he's looking for suggestions for his next game.

Yeah man, lot of good info in the STGW episode if you want to learn the basics of Progear. That was really fun to do!

I really enjoy watching their episodes and hearing the commentary, even for games I never played before, gives some really good background and strategy and maybe a new game (or two) to add to the want's list. :-)

I watch runs like this and realize how utterly horrible I am at these games. But it still doesn't stop me from playing them.

Totally, it's a great genre of games even if you just want to simply play them without going for score. But when you find one that you want to play more of and improve on it's like the game really opens up.
