Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

I picked up Steel Empire on the eShop due to the sale. Played two levels and it's pretty decent. I love the visuals and presentation, but it's definitely on the easier side of things. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Caladrius Blaze Arcade Mode high score. Not bad for only my second day with the game:

The Dreamcast SHMUP, Redux: Dark Matters, that was released earlier this year is finally hitting Steam. There's a 20% discount for early purchasers. Brings it down to $9.74

This doesn't appear to be a bullet hell, I'll grab it on the 18th once the Winter Seal starts.

2 Days ago I managed to snag a copy of Saidaioujou (Platinum Collection) for $25 on Play-Asia. Can't wait to finally play it!

How's this game overall? I never care when they release these homebrew things as overpriced Neo Geo carts or Dreamcast discs, but for $10 on Steam it sounds reasonable.

It was a pretty big letdown for me this year - it took a really long time to release (I think 2 years?) and it turned out to be an inferior rehash of the original.

Dux 1.5 was a better game because of the cleaner design and interesting aesthetic. Redux is a muddy mess graphically, and comes off really amateurish compared to the original. Gameplay wise, it's still Dux, with some minor scoring tweaks.

Worth $10? Not really.

Ouch. OK, I get the message. Maybe when it's on sale for $2.50 then.

So I picked up Chain Blaster on the eShop as well since it was on sale. Pretty neat game despite its fairly shallow content. I'm gathering there's like no real-end to the game? It just continuously loops? Anyone ever check it out here? I'm assuming it's pretty laughable amongst shooter vets. I kind of dig it though. I ended up getting to the 4th or 5th loop, I think. There was some hi-score challenge/unlockable for getting 500,000 points, so I got that in my first "run". Not sure if there's anything beyond that other than going for a higher score (there is an online leaderboard). I think the game's got a decent framework for a better, more fleshed out shooter though.

Not laughable at all. Quite an excellent game. And a lot of fun. Maybe laughable on a board like shmups but GAF is much nicer and open place.

There is also an excellent recent DSiware Shooter called Sagittarius A Star that is very good (don't think it has been localised yet, though).

Are you talking about the Dreamcast version, or the newer PC release? I'd heard that the image quality was much better.

BTW, I bought Raiden 4 Overkill in the recent PSN sale. I don't remember Raiden being this rock hard. Kicked my arse from here to Jupiter, can't even clear the first stage. Am I getting old?

The DC version - I should have clarified that at the start. I'd be curious to see some screen shots of the PC version - though I still dislike the more generic art style they went with on Redux.

Yeah, I like it a lot too. I wasn't honestly going to mention the game here at first because I thought most people would have laughed at it, ha! It's cool that the shooter crowd here isn't a bunch of elitists. Never been to a dedicated shmup site, but I could imagine a genre like this can draw that type of crowd more so than others.

they're great places to pick up/share strategies, compete on hi scoring lists, and trade console ports/arcade boards & parts.

not really the best assumption to make since a lot of us participate over there too ._.

I would argue that it's just more informative overall.
the impressions thread is kind of positive ;/
main complaints seemed to be about the scoring bug in the first game and the fact that the DC version was advertised as an exclusive backer reward.

Ah, sorry, I wasn't particuarlly calling out that site or anything. Shooters are a niche and highly skill-based genre, so I think it's a fair assesment to make that some (not all)dedicated forums to such a genre could potentially draw a more elitist crowd. I've never even been to one of those sites before, so I'm probably wrong and just generalizing.

I mean, Kokuga was one of my favorite shooters from last year. There's gotta be people out there that would be super bothered/weirded out by that, ha!

How do you compare it the other neo releases from NGDEV? Did you play the Dux games on DC?

Didn't play Dux. It's a step up from Fast Striker and Last Hope, it's not at good as Neo XYX, but the style is vastly different.

gunstarhero: Neo XYX was pretty awesome IMO. Apparently the DC release has some issues, I dont think they handled them as well as they could - clearly more testing was required.

I've been slacking on the review due to workload at work.

I'm the site admin and owner, it does have a bunch of elitists. To greatly generalise the people who play shooters and post on GAF appear (to me) to be much more casual players. This leads to proportionally more acceptance of different approaches to the genre with varying flaws.

On a specialised forum you have more people who are heavily invested in the genre, including highly skilled players who demand certain standards from games - so every time something new appears you can expect to see a strong mix of opinions with no punches held in addition to people who are more easy going. Some of those people are louder than others.

I'm somewhere in the middle, I'm a bad player but I have standards and certain things are an insta-fail in shooter design. I grew up just wanting to blow up aliens.

Shmups is the defacto board. I dunno what competes. I go there once a day, at least. I think all of shooter-GAF lurks or posts there.

They can be brutal with the lesser atypical shooters that don't conform to what they expect. They can be especially brutal on ports that have discrepencies! They tore apart the recent Sakura Flamingo, which blows my mind! That set is such a classy, inexpensive release.

C'mon man, even the Raiden III rom dump on Steam has TATE. Klon put out a steaming turd with a nice boxart, the hate is much deserved. I wish so badly that I'd spent that money towards Bullet Soul Infinite Burst. At least Play-Asia have us the shmup deal of the year with Caladrius Blaze for less than 30.

Eschatos lacked tate (at least for Judgement Silversword) at first too. It was patched in later.

Slowly improving my Caladrius Blaze scores. Aiming for the top 100 on all the leaderboards (Original/Arcade/Evolution/Boss Rush). Already there on everything but Evolution, where I'm sitting at 105th. Just a bit further on that one and I'll have it.

to be fair, the majority of the members give nearly every game a chance and provide their honest gripes. it actually blows my mind that developers (such as the redux developer) head there to interact with the community, gauge popularity, accept critiques, etc...

as far as shmup information goes.... it's by far one of the best places to obtain it. it's too bad we lost some of the strategies from cave-stg tho which was another great outlet even though EOJ wasn't very well-liked.

I dunno know. I like them all. The releases. Not a big fan of Bullet Soul, though! I don't care about tate. Nice, but if it doesn't have it, no biggie. They chose to make the game for 16:9 since all the games have different aspects and it is a compilation. I can respect that.

If that were the only issue, sure. But stuff like the annoying slowdown when text pops up in Radirgy/Karous/Illvelo or the ridiculously loud sound effects for all games (for some reason the shooting noise stays loud as hell even when I lowered the setting) and Chaos Field performing worse than the GC version is telling of how little they cared in putting it out in the state the release is. The one saving grace of this collection is Radirgy Noa, but again we've had that on the 360 for a while now.

EOJs guides should all be back now. He removed them for a bit but later sent them to me with permission to re-post, I need to check that.

No problem. Anyone sporting a Tatsujin/Truxton avatar so proudly deserves the benefit of the doubt. Those smart bombs, man. That lightning laser.

Had a feeling I would see this post ;)

Actually I have a feeling this is actually going to be good. The guy who directed Dodonpachi Maximum is involved. There's going to be screens in the new Famitsu App mag this week so I'll report back if it looks sexy enough.

I will say one thing, they have their waifu game on point:

Speaking of Psyvariar, I wish Psyvariar 2 would get a port, either to PC or modern consoles. I don't have a DC anymore and the PS2 port is really not very good at all (save for the dedicated "spin" button that makes the game a hell of a lot easier to play).

More Psyvariar is better than no Psyvariar. I just hope that it's an original game, and not a cut+paste of bits from the previous ones.

I like the art work. :3

was one of my favorite shmups when I first got into the genre. it was actually the first one I spent months playing to unlock gluon and 1CC. never liked the other psyvariar games, but wish this one was a console release.

We've gone almost a whole page without mentioning that Crimzon Clover: World Ignition is on sale somewhere, so here goes.

It's Steam Holiday Sale time:

Crimzon Colver: World Ignition - $3.39

Revolver360 Re:actor - $4.99

If you already own them, you should buy them again to gift to friends, because they're totally awesome and sweet.

Thanks , i got crimzon and passed on re:actor because i prefer vertical shmups.

Any other good ones on steam? (Other than the obvious Ikaruga)

re: Psyvariar. This is my port begging post. Then again, fuck it, whatever, nobody cares about something as frivolous as a video game, right?

"It's better than nothing." The shackled emaciated prisoner spoke these words silently to himself as he struggled from gagging on the dog food.
I wonder if I'm the only person who'll have Caladrius Blaze in their GOTY list.
It would be on mine, but then again I'm not even sure if I've played 10 new games in 2014.
