Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

I don't own an arcade stick for PS3 but Raiden IV Overkill is a lot of fun and looks great. This is the first version of Raiden IV I've played. So much better than what I remember of Raiden III on PS2.

Some details about the Crimzon Clover Steam port.

「Crimzon Clover WORLD IGNITION」

That's awesome news, and i was thinking lately that it would be great if i could play this version. Should have asked for a few million Euro instead >.<

no, it's trash and it belongs in a dumpster. stick to Raiden Project + Raiden Fighters Aces

The best use for Raiden Legacy is probably justifying playing the games in MAME instead.

Nah, he's right. No matter what you might think about the games itself, that collection isn't worth it.

I was referring to Raiden Fighters Aces on X360 :P sorry for the confusion, dunno why Legacy came up on my post, I must've been sleepy! otherwise why would I be excited for a possible PAL release after all these years, Legacy has always been available here, the one missing is the
X360 collection. The collection had a bad history of being limbo'ed in publishers hell here in PAL land and unfortunately both the NTSC skus are region locked.

I still think fully updated Raiden Legacy on iPad+iCade is very enjoyable.
PC port is trash, but I was never referring to that one, since it came out later and was super buggy. Although the music is at least much better than on MAME :P

Seems like the older Horis all work. I've decided to use my HRAP 3 SE as my overkill stick. Neat and rare-ish stick that fits well with Raiden.

FUUUUU... I had never bought it yet!
Don't want to spend more money on JPN but even if I did the game isn't on there nor icon the EU store :/ still have my PAL disc but no working PS2 (and even if it did work I have no more space for consoles, last-gen + current gen is my limit.

I wonder how does the Windows port play, I mean it was on Type X so...

The PC port of Raiden III is great. Ran like butter even on my junky-ass setup back in the day. Like you say, it's a Type X port to PC, all they really had to do is disable the security dongle lookup, and I bet it just ran without issue. Thanks CyberFront you will be missed.

There was some discussion on the shmups board the other day about how the NA release of Raiden IV: Overkill was released about a week before the JP version, which got delayed for unspecified reasons. It's pretty unconventional for a game with a local publisher to be releasing before the developer itself releases in JP.

Then you have this mystery deletion of Raiden III from PSN.

I'm wondering if something didn't go down between Moss and UFO. Hope not, as UFO is one of the last publishers still bringing shooters to the west.

Destructoid review of R-Type Dimensions PS3.

First off, R-Type Dimensions features a newly arranged soundtrack by Kenichiro Iwasaki that is pure audio bliss, and is a perfect matchup to the game’s new HD graphics.

I believe the new soundtrack is actually indeed new, wasn't in the XBLA version in 2009.

And if a player prefers to map any of the controls to another button, R-Type Dimensions features full controller customization, too!

Another new feature which I am in love with is the slow-motion feature. At any point during the game, players can hold down the L2 Button (by default) and enter a super slowed down mode that brings the action to a crawl, and allows players to better analyze their surroundings to make calculated shots and maneuvers. It’s key for those looking to 1CC either game! At least it is for me. I honestly don’t remember R-Type being so challenging.

That control config screen reminds me of this:

And what's this about a new OST? That's certainly worth a double dip.

Just downloaded & installed a few min ago.

Yeah, there is indeed a new soundtrack for the PS3 version.

I'd have to go back on YouTube to see if the XBLA had its own remixed soundtrack in 2009, or just the original arcade music from '87 and '89. I don't remember.

Prepare to be blown away shooter-GAF.

Heck yeah. It will be nice to to have this game on Steam especially for the shump fans who missed out on importing the retail version a few years ago. (Was lucky enough to get one)

Now all we need is Edelweiss to hurry up and release Astebreed on Steam but the good news is that if you purchase it on Playism (on 5/23) who gets to sell it first, but you'll get a Steam key for it later once it comes out.

Nice to hear about more Shooting Them Upward games coming to digital services. I mean, soon I'll have 3 games that I never expected to play legitimately*!

*Well, one of them is Ikaruga, which I probably could have found a copy of, but the Steam version is nice. Once Crimzon Clover hits Steam, I'll have that and Recca Summer Carnival '92 (on 3DS). Damn, it feels good to be a spaceship.

It's old news to you guys by now, I'm sure, but god DAMN Recca is awesome. Tough as nails, fast as lightning, and absolute balls-to-the-wall chaos. Sometimes those rare collector's games aren't actually that good; this is not one of those times.
Plus the music is godly.

The US version doesn't have voice acting, but I'm glad to have the japanese version with lot of (japanese style) screams.

yeah, SHMUPS forum has little love for it but i dug 1, still want 2 for a good price but even the JP Giga Wang 2 seems a bit up these days

Mars Matrix is crack on a disc. I can't stop playing even though I always die on stage 4. I love everything about the game: mechanics, control, graphics, music, soundtrack, etc.

What other games did the main people behind MM design after the Dreamcast era?

Nothing that good again - it was crack in a bottle and once you're done snorting it, you just crash.

Looks like AmiAmi got in the new Bullet Soul title. Looking forward to it since I've not been following the title too closely. Ready to be surprised!

Good news everyone... sorta. The JP version of Overkill just got a new patch that makes my bootleg BrawlStick work correctly. JP ver. 1.01 (12MB). It doesn't seem like th US version is up to date yet. I believe we already got a ver. 1.01, so I guess we're waiting on ver. 1.02.

That being said, OverKill mode is a motherfucker! It wants me to put more bullets into guys that already blew up to get more points? Sheet, that's pretty fucked up bro.

ALSO: Caladrius Blaze is hitting 8/28/14? With new characters and shit? Damn MOSS!

Awesome! I ordered from play Asia, so hopefully mine is not far behind.

Anyone know if it's region free like the last Bullet Soul?

I heard Caldrius AC was better than the original 360 release. Did the 360 version ever get updated to match the arcade version?

It's only slightly better. I have a friend that plays it pretty often and he mentioned that they upped the max multiplier (to 10x IIRC), but you hit it so early in the stages that you don't really feel the difference. Most of the stage you just wind up at max multiplier for +50% of the stage. He said that if they'd made it x15 or x20 it would be a lot more fun.

There's also additional bonus stages between the existing stages but they're somewhat chore-like mowing down of the same enemies on the same scrolling background.

Character balance has changed a bit, for the better apparently. You can also finally kill the ridiculously bits on Stage 6, which was just absurd on the Xbox360 version.

There are people actively updating the scores in Arcadia recently, so it seems like it has some life in it, even if it's not my particular cup of tea.

And no IIRC the 360 release never got updated with the arcade changes, though they should have tweaked the "bits" on the last stage at least.
