Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Finally made it to an arcade with a big shmups collection (Galloping Ghost in Chicago). Experienced the following on a cabinet for the first time:

- RayStorm
- Darius Gaiden
- Progear
- Daioujou
- 19XX
- Battle Garegga
- Mars Matrix
- Dodonpachi

There were so many more and so little time (and energy after this many games in a row)!

GGA is so good! I haven't been back there since they added Garegga, but I'll be there soon for a shmupsmeet in June. I'm actually curious if they added the zakk roms to the BG board or if the rank is continually cranked from continuous play.

I currently hold that progear record too :P (does the monitor still blow?). It's the WR according to aurcade but it's only 207 million or so less than the actual WR (lol).

Not sure about the Garegga PCB, but the records on that machine are from just this month so I would guess there must be a solution in place for the rank issue.

The Progear and Daioujou monitors are both way too dim af the moment. Looks like I'll be going back to MAME for Progear.

steam hint?

They would be major dicks if it weren't a hint. Ketsui was my first STG I ever bought, so it holds a special place in my heart, even if I haven't been even close to 1cc it. I hope it releases soon on PC.

Cave;s Twitter posts pictures of all their X360 games all the time, including Ketsui. People think it's a teaser every time they post a picture but it ain't.

yea, the progear monitor is shit/flakey and the only way I was able to play was by already knowing the game. sometimes it lights up but then it just dims again in a matter of minutes. I don't remember the doj/ddp cab being too bad but I believe it.

As far as garegga scores go, no one's broken 5mil yet which even I've exceeded on my board (still hard for me to get over 4mil/past stage 5) so that could be a rank issue, but I know ZER (zerst) will letter score it once we get over there in June.

prime time arcade for sure tho

I just 1CC'd RefRain on normal. That game is a lot of fun.

Congratulations on the clear!

I'm really sad since my vga died right before RefRain came out on Steam, I still bought it but since then I've been itching to play and I just can't. :(

I've been playing MAME on my 13" macbook but vertical games are PAINFUL on such a small screen

Cheers, guys.

RefRain is very polished and the localization excellent: tutorial, manual (including in depth tips), all available in english. There's also a fair amount of story, starting the game is like logging into an OS and after each run the characters send each other messages. It's not like a VN, but there's more than your usual SHMUP story. It being a few years old, shows a little from the assets side though. The STG part is 3D rendered, but the rest of the presentation is sprite work with a base res of 640x480. Upping the internal resolution makes the 3D part sharper, but the 2D rest blurry and soft. I ended up using the default 480p and binary doubled it up to 960p with nearest-neighbor scaling. Blocky yes, but at least pixel perfect and sharp. The M.E.F.A2 system together with the Concept Reactor is almost game breaking when combo'd correctly, but hey it's super fun.

So Zenodyne R on Steam, any thoughts? The music really does sound like something you'd hear later on the Genesis...or at least Vectorman style.

For the first time ever on the internet in one post, all of EGM's coverage of S.C.A.T (aka Final Mission) by Natsume for the NES/Famicom.

8-bit Forgotten Worlds clone that was pretty awesome.

Been reading around for kicks and finding where people rank games by difficulty. Boosting my ego a bit seeing Mushi and DDP ranked as harder than I expected. Won't ever get a 1cc but I think a 2cc is within my abilities with some practice. Really gotta get a copy of DDP psx, though. Not many on eBay.

Recently discovered this gem on WiiU VC. Such a great game!

from the NES/Famicom appreciation thread, for NES Life Force and Gradius fans.

The strategy guide was spread across two issues of VG&CE - February and April 1989.

Thanks for cross-posting this! Practical nostalgia is the best nostalgia :)

RefRain on Steam now has the (Japanese-only, untranslated) official artbook available as DLC. It's a very stylish package, as with the rest of the game. I think it was previously only available in print.

(I might wait until the Steam sale to buy it so I can get a trading card on the side)

I've beaten Sky Force Anniversary yesterday. Now, that is a very fun game. Its visual are stunningly lush, crisp and got that nice HD pop. Lots of arcade pedigree, the gameplay reminds me a lot of Capcom's "1944 - The Loop Master" with the super-deformed military cute of Irem's "In the Hunt" or SNK's "Metal Slug" series. The soundtrack is so Amiga, the nostalgia almost hurts. Lovely Euro SHMUP.

Raiden IV Overkill $3.74 on steam.
DariusBurst CS went down to $35.

Grabbing raiden and waiting on DBCS. If it hits $25 im in.

How's the Darius CS DLC?

I think all the DLC's are fantastic. Even the book got super upgraded since it's release. It now has super hi res images and you can zoom in pretty close.

They also constantly update the game. They patched it again 2 days ago.
