Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Yeah medals drop SUPER fast. Not playing for score yet so I'm not discounting spread shot, but laser is just too cool.

That screenshot you posted reminds me: that green number above your power up bar seems to dictate whether or not you can launch this charge shot thing. When it says "OK!", you can hold the shot (not autofire) button and your ship will flash, and it creates a space on the screen where bullets turn into medals.

Of the two I'm having more fun with XIIZEAL but both of them are really just pure shmup bliss. I know that sounds terrible but these games are shmups in a very raw form, and if you dig games like RFJ you should give them a shot.

Yeah,

I've been activating that thing by accident. The game is super cryptic and mysterious. I've had about a half-dozen different pathways enemy-wise on the first small stage alone. I've been getting my shot to something like below...a strong laser with a little spread and missiles. I also use a three-button layout with Shot on A, Rapid on B, and Bomb on X.

I wanna get into XIIZEAL but with so many shmup releases I've got to pick my battles. I'll save that one for a fallow period.

Sort of makes you feel like an archaeologist, doesn't it? In many ways DeltaZEAL is a game rescued from being lost forever. For one, it's never been properly emulated, and even if it was, the game as it appeared in arcades was unfinished.

It really is historical preservation. Thanks for the impressions/opinions guys. I'll be picking this up after I get bored of SDOJ kicking my ass.

Yep, a keeper.

And just one more feather in the 360 shooter catalog making it inch towards the Saturn. I'd rank the two systems about equal now in terms of shmup releases. Saturn has a bit more variety but 360 is also a CaveBox. (and far better arcade stick support).

Ordered the wonder pack. Is it going to be Eschatos+Ginga on one disc and the soundtrack on another, or 3 different discs in one case?

No company has released a repackaged 360 version with multiple games on one disc. I bet it will be three discs (maybe on a spindle like Lost Odyssey).

I somehow ended up in 3B.

so, a friend put me onto more physical releases for 360, wanted to know how:

  • Dondonpachi Ressurection
  • Espgaluda II
  • Akai Katana

were, as well as where to get them on the cheap!

Not sure how cheap you want, but a bunch of Amazon sellers have them. Looks like $40ish for the most part for the imports: DDP, Esp, there's also Mushihimesama Futari and the Muchi Muchi Pork+Pink Sweets double pack. Akai Katana and Deathsmiles are under $20 (or $30 for the DS LE).

They're all great games in their own right - you really can't go wrong with any of those.

I would imagine Akai Katana can be picked up for the cheapest in that list - which also happens to be my favorite out of those 3 (with Esp2 a close second)

Have you gotten the two trains side mission on the second stage? I keep getting it...I'm guessing that it is because I'm knocking out the three big earth-scooper tanks that come from the top of the screen very quick.

And sometimes do some bat-shit crazy things all of a sudden during certain plays.

And I get different colored Delta blocks at the end of each stage for the transition. Strange, indeed.

Once!

I also got what seems like a mini-boss in Stage 1 a few times.

Stage 2 boss mops the floor with me pretty much everytime :( I've been saving my void shot thing just to get out of a few of his patterns

Well this year's STG summer carnival has officially started for me. :)

Dayum! Your brain will melt, nicely done.

Speaking of melting brains, DOUBLE BREAK MODE in Crimzon Colver is the greatest thing since the leveling up in Batsugun. I don't have much time at home to mess with it, so I installed it on a work PC inside a VM because reasons, and I think I managed to get the framerate down to single digits. :)

Have fun meppi!

Btw, I just read on shmups that Shooting Love 10th bonus CD also has some additional data content if you put it in a computer...concert or something.

Thanks! :D

I'll be sure to see if it works on a mac as well. If its just pictures or video files, I'm sure it'll be fine.
Just got home from working the late shift and popped in DDP. Not feeling it quite yet, but the same thing happened with Muchi Muchi Pork, which I now adore.
The game feels very different from the past couple of DDP games, so it's probably just that.
Have to take a break to wash up and get some food in me though, but after that it'll be back to my arcade stick till I need to get to sleep.

Gonna keep the rest of the games sealed till Saturday though, so I have something really nice to look forward to this weekend.

Speaking of Which, I already secured a nice (not so) little order for the end of July.
I have to make sure that I have something nice to do during my summer vacation. ;)

Akai Katana is awesome. I still want the physical version just for the hell of it, but ended up getting the digital.

Also you guys were right, seeing how far you can get with 1 credit is much more fun than just continuing over and over. Especially in games with infinite credits.

For whatever reason I adopted an aversion to continues years ago. I never continue, and haven't since I bought Ikaruga (GC) when I was like 15. I made an exception for Metal Black because she swept me off my feet, and when ever I play shmups with another person we spam continues. Otherwise: not even once.

Honestly, I don't recommend it. It's probably better to just use continues and focus on using fewer and fewer of them as you get better at them. I haven't seen the end of any shmup I can't 1cc. :/

This is what I do for beatemups. It works great...not that I've 1CCed a beatemup lately though. =/
Still, it's nice dropping from like 30 continues to half that on the very next play-through.

I find credit feeding sucks the joy out of shmups for me. I do it from time to time (especially early on), but otherwise like just playing for survival and using the stage practice options. But it's very much personal preference kind of thing. I think it's the unlimited nature of credit feeding that gets me, unlike, say, Guardian Heroes where you get a limited number of continues.

I got back into shmups with Ikaruga (DC), and started playing them more seriously too. I'll "quarter feed" sometimes to see the whole game's layout (the shipyard level -> the canyon level -> the cloud level, etc.) but I'll eventually start a serious run. It is damn satisfying to constantly beat your own personal best.

I used to credit feed through arcade games once to see them ahead of time but I don't even do that now. I love reaching a new portion for the first time and having it be entirely new to me. Too exciting. Same goes for watching videos, I tend to avoid them.

Honestly, I don't recommend it. It's probably better to just use continues and focus on using fewer and fewer of them as you get better at them.

In my experience (among me and my friends) people make better progress when they don't use continues at all and restart on game over. I don't think the "use as many as you need and then use less" method works well in practice, since you're still using an unlimited amount regardless and your motivation to use less is way weaker (lower my "credits used" number like it's some kind of score vs actually successfully bringing myself to a point further in the game).

The devotion of 360 shmup fans never ceases to amaze me. It's like supporting the spouse who keeps punching your face whenever you want to hug them.

I don't dispute the quality of the games, just the disrespect MS has for its system's owners. I wish the PS3 embraced shmups more.

Wait, what?

They've never punched any of us in the face. The system has had multiple shooter games released year in and year out for years. I've never been disrespected so I'm not sure what you mean by that?! If you are talking region-locking, that has been a nuisance for a few (often minor titles) but most have been region free.

If you want all the shooter titles it is a simple fix to just buy a J-360.

That's basically it in an nutshell. The region lock. It's absurd to have to buy a second system to play games you own.

Ultimately not a big deal. Shmup fans have adapted. Those who want the titles come in a four forms:

1) Those who just go with just the region-free releases.

2) Those who own just an Asian/J-360.

3) Those who own two 360s.

4) Those who own a J-tag 360.

It is the eighth year of the system. Everybody knows how it is. Japanese shmup producers who are smarter tend to accomadate all four categories. Really not much to do with MS at this point.

Historically most home consoles have been region locked, including the reigning champions of home shmupping: the PCE and the MD.

I'd go far beyond that. Almost ALL consoles have been region-locked. PS3 is truly the aberration. That does not make it right, but that is how it has been and certainly gamers have gotten around it. With the always-online and constant connectivity of modern systems it will just get worse.

Yep. Mostly differences based on how easy it was to overcome it. I still remember cracking off the sides of my copy of Sword of Vermilion with pliers until I could play it on my Genesis.

I am hoping for confirmation soon that PS4 is not region locked, but not really expecting it.

!!

The most I did was to clip the internal plugs on my N64. I can't imaging cutting an actual cartridge.

I'm very surprised that nobody has developed a USB dongle to get around 360 region-lock. Maybe it is forthcoming once we move on to the next generation.

Personally, probably my breaking point would be ISP-blocking. I don't really have an issue with buying multiple systems but ISP-blocking would really be a downer. That said, i'd just drive on...not like I'm going to boycott a system because I can't play other games from other regions.

And, I've really got no issues what MS is doing with the XB1.

I've had a Steam account since September 2003. I don't care about connecting to the internet and I don't care about the second hand market. XB1 sensationalism is an exercise in mob mentality, to me.

But this is a little off topic.

How many of you know about Bullet Heaven? It's about a guy who reviews console (so far) shooting games from all eras. It's a humble show, but the reviews are short, honest and far more informative than your average gaming site review.

I recently discovered it on youtube and I'm already hooked. I spent one entire day watching the first two seasons back to back. Nostalgia trip yesss.

Here's the first episode:

It would be nice if all just had limited continues, even if you could do similar to classic consoles, and just boost the credit number. The only game I usually go full on credit feeding is Metal Slug series. Its not a shoot em up, but I dont think anyone on the planet could 1CC any mainline game from that series.

I do. I really like the intro sequence, and its actually pretty helpful when picking games to go after. Also speaking of this generations, i'm still waiting on Gradius VI for the PS3. :P

Heh. I was in my teens and just blew all my free cash importing this mysterious Japanese RPG, no way that I wasn't going to play it. It was immediately obvious that it was just the indents on the US console that kept it from working, so I attacked it with needle nose pliers. :D Looking back anything could have gone wrong and left with me with a paperweight, but: teenager.

I actually 1cc'd the original Metal Slug last year. It's one of the harder games I've cleared but like all of this stuff it's more doable than you'd think.

Reading impressions around here and on shmups, it seems I made a wise choice to wait on SDOJ and might get Shooting Love soon. Looks pretty good, and it being region free is great news, even though I´m planning on getting a J-360 soon.

That's a publisher issue, not a Microsoft issue, and if the situation was reversed and the PS3 ended up being the STG platform of choice the situation may well have ended up being similar.

Yeah, I could see MS1. MS3 though...that damn Rootmarks battle...

MS3 is definitely doable, but I had the Xbox port which pretty much forced you to memorize the levels to see the whole game (continues would send you back the the beginning of a level in that version).

Just played Ikaruga a bit tonight, god damn, each time I visit it, it's a stressful but amazingly fun time.

I find myself resetting Ikaruga more than playing it. I know what my high scores are supposed to be through each part of the level, and if I am not hitting it, my fingers go for the reset button really quickly. Probably not the best for my Gamecube, but I can't break the habit.

Hmm...maybe I need to go back and give both a play in the 1CC mindset.

I'm proud that I finally got the second boss down to a science. Died minutes later after making a dumb mistake in the tight corner section of stage 3.

Yeah, it apparently has some nice extras to unlock when you beat it (two exclusive modes), but level 5 is impossible to complete without continuing. I just can't do it. :(

WTF? I rarely read complete nonsense on neogaf, but here we are with the above post.

I don't dispute the quality of the games, just the disrespect MS has for its system's owners. I wish the PS3 embraced shmups more.

Ah, so you're just angry that you get so few shmups on your PS3. Next time, lead with that so we can all ignore the rest of your post.

what was wrong with what cj said? he's not a fanboy, dude just (rightfully) despises region locking, especially where such a vibrant scene exists that we have to jump through hoops to partake in. ask him about the 3DS.

Most X360 shmups aren't region locked and/or have localizations. And you can always buy a J360 if you want 100% of them. Does he even own a 360? Anyway, comparing it to an abusive spouse is complete nonsense.
