Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

To be fair, there is an absolute gold mine of shooters on the JPN/NA in the form of PS1 and PCE titles, and even one on PS2 Classics.

Its true about PS3 though, and a shame really. To satiate my shmup appetite this gen, I've had to beef up my PS2/Saturn library (my poor wallet) since I don't game on 360 anymore :/

Awesome, I come home from a jog and DDP SDOJ is waiting for me on the table.

Uhh...which modes should I start out with? I see 360, Arcade HD and 1.5 (I don't care about Novice lol)

Wait...what!?!
Is there a list? I'm gonna be grabbing a PS3 sometime this year to import Kamen Rider Battride War and i'll be setting up a japanese account for stuff on it. Oh lord what goodies await me?

There is no comprehensive list. I've been meaning to put one together for awhile and will likely do so, but PSN is down now on my end. And some of the Irem games were pulled. Until I make a list I will highlight some of my purchases over the years:

Neo Geo/SNK:

Alpha Mission
Alpha Mission II
Vangaurd
Prehistoric Isle
Vanguard II

PC Engine/Super Grafx:

Aldynes
Battle Ace
Gates of Thunder
Lords of Thunder
Gradius
Gradius II Gofer

Playstation Classics:

Cotton Original
Darius G
Donpachi
Dodonpachi
Einhander
Gaia Seed
Harmful Park
Raiden
Raycrisis
R-Type Delta
R-Types
Thunderforce V Perfect System
Zanac X Zanac
Shienryu
Sonic Wings Special

Playstation 2 Classics:

Psyvariar Complete (still need to buy this one, but it just came out)
Raiden III

There are a lot others...things like the Star Soldiers on PCE, Twinbee, etc (and better ports than VC).

You've probably already figured everything out by now, but for the next person who comes along, a quick reference/partial summary of blackoak's translation:

360 - incessant moeblob chatter mode. Uses a lifebar, which decreases when you autobomb or press shot+laser (creating a special powerful shot). Only Saya is playable.

Arcade HD - self-explanatory

1.5 - arcade with some mechanical changes as suggested by testers and superplayers. (ex: using laser while hypering now raises the combo gauge, inter-stage no miss bonus increased) Go read the source for a more exhaustive list, though it doesn't specify any exact numbers.

Were Pulstar and its sequel ever released on downloadable services (PSN/XBLA/VC)?

P.S. I downloaded Ironclad on the VC the other day... Is that game supposed to be good or am I missing something?

Neither Pulstar nor Viewpoint have ever gotten releases on home consoles in perfect (emulated) form. I have been eyeing an AES Viewpoint at a local store for awhile now because of it. Love that game.

I like Ironclad, but a lot of its desirability comes from only being available on Neo CD.

got Raiden Fighter Aces for $9 while making another pick-up...CIB! i could tell the GS guy had good taste, cause he clearly wanted it, haha. IV is about the same price as well, is it worth hunting down?

I dunno, the Pulstar and Blazing star are about as perfect on J-VC as I think you are going to get. Both have not made it the NA VC yet but there is still hope as D3 is still steadily releasing titles. Nam-1975 appeared on the Japan store then a month later on the US store.

Is there an original arcade low res mode or is the HD one the only option? Seemed like the other ports had that available as a separate mode.

Including a low res mode is the exception rather than the norm lately. Only the first three releases (Deathsmiles, Mushi Futari, Espgaluda II) had both styles. Pork/Sweets and Guwange have -only- low res assets while every other game has no low res option.

I don't have access to the Japanese Virtual Console, so I haven't seen either yet. Hopefully they do bring both here. That would be great as Virtual Console in general is pretty much spot on for emulation.

Viewpoint is still the big one. I love that game.

Congrats! I got mine super cheap too and I also grabbed IV after that as well. Both are DEFINITELY worth it. Hell just getting Raiden Fighters Jet would be worth the cost of both of those IMO.

Definitely buy IV though and grab its DLC ships as well (before you CANT). Super fun stuff and they definitely put it together well to utilize the hardware better.

90% of the work is done.

Someone help with the rest? :P I can't find anything that looks clean, and I can't do text like with the rhythm game one.

I dunno, it might be fun/appropriate to use the classic Gradius power-up bar: speed up, missile, double, laser, option, ?

Damn. Thought this was a disc release when I saw the link. May buy anyways, but I'll still be hunting down a disc copy of the regular edition.

Yeah,

A bit bummed about that. But $20 for english menus is a bargain. And gotta support G.rev anyway we can. Still, I never really played the PS3 version so this will be a perfect time to get into it with the DLC and it will be nice on the XMB. If I'm not mistaken, the DLC was probably around $20, right? I know it was pricey for the 360 release.

Does Mamoru have any story text? Because FYI, UFO have a less than sterling reputation with niche games.

UFO is a pretty garbage publisher (really hammers in the state of shmup releases in the west, yes) but they should be serviceable for Mamoru. They just need to get the menus down...and maybe in the in-game quips...though I reckon they will retain the japanese for them. This is not a Shiki style game at all. Not much story.

Never forget:

The 2 DLC appears to be 400MSP a piece. So about $10? Also the PS3 version has an extra mode.

That's good to know. Though I thought they did a pretty bang-up job on Radilgy's story text. It was a great balance of faithful and weird.

Ahh, ok. If I recall correctly the PS3 version already has much of the 360 DLC (extra characters) built in already. Plus the extra 16:9 mode you mentioned.

Anyways, a very good and different game. Well worth supporting.

Thought this was the other Monkey King shmup they did. Never knew this existed. What did they ruin?

Saint is a sequel of sorts to their other Monkey King shmup for the Wii, The Monkey King: The Legend Returns. It's far from a good game, but Saint IS at least better than The Monkey King. That game's really completely terrible, but Saint manages to be only below average.

Thats the best I've ever heard anyone talk about that game. Didn't it have that playthrough where a dad and his son held down shoot and didn't move and beat the whole game on youtube?

You could probably do that in Monkey King (it's an extremely easy, short game), but Saint has two loops if you want to really finish it, and does eventually begin to challenge some.

I came into Saint with extremely low expectations, since I'd played The Monkey King and kind of hated it because of how I finished the game in like half an hour (and the replay value is not great), so yes, it was a moderately pleasant surprise. It's not a great game, but I think it's kind of fun. It feels like a lost C-tier Genesis/SNES game, I guess.

Got a new arcade board in finally! It has been a couple of years.

It is Battle Bakraid which is just awesome from the first few hours of play. I sent it thru my New Astro and it was perfect but I got a color glitch so then I sent it thru my little Neo candy. Finally put it on the floor with the XRGB Mini and the 42-inch. Love this game! I'm sure it is on mame but nothing beats the original hardware. Setup for the next few days:

Gorgeous vertical scanlines:

I love Aldynes on SuperGrafx. It's very addictive and the later stages look better than the first.

Also, don't forget about Last Resort on Neo-Geo, it predates the very 'R-Typey' Pulstar by ~3 years or so, and, visually looks somewhat like R-Type II.

damn Yes Boss!, your setup looks so dope there...there's a few SHMUPs id love to turn the screen sideways for but im told that's a bad idea for plasmas

(crosspost)

All this commotion about CAVE caused me to make this thread:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=573261

Please don't turn it into "Cave should've released on PS3!" part 59308590348, we've all been down that road a million times.

I've been in that thread trying to figure out from what folks said was their last good and beloved title what to suggest they give a shot. I really think the essential shmup thread is going to help a lot of these folks when it launches.

Thats awesome man - congrats on the pick up. BB has been on my list to get for quite a while. I'm a huge fan of Battle Garegga (it's in my top 5 shooters of all time), and Bakraid is the sequel from what I understand.

Have you noticed any similarities? (assuming you've play BG)
